Dabei werden sozial- und kulturwissenschaftliche Globalisierungstheorien berücksichtigt. Entwickelt wird dazu ein Interpretationsmodell, in dessen Rahmen sowohl französische als auch frankophone Romane in ihrer Interrelation mit Globalisierungsprozessen gedeutet werden können. Dabei wird deutlich, auf welche Art und Weise literarische Texte Globalisierung reflektieren, wie die Literatur selbst an Globalisierungsprozessen teilhat und vor allem welche Funktionen sie im Zeitalter der Globalisierung zu übernehmen vermag. While only an eclectic, multi-dimensional approach grasps the variety of its multiple facets, the latter seems to be highly contingent on the interplay of external structural and internal sociological dynamics. While the organisation appears in this out sketched context as a relatively important player in times of political and economic stability, having its merits in conflict-preventive measures through the building of trust and the construction of a common identity, the regime shows strong enervations in times of crisis.

On one hand he was celebrated as the "Poet of the American Revolution" (Eberwein 191) or the "Father of American Poetry" (Stauffer 52), a journalist of influence, a patriot and skilful writer, on the other hand he was forgotten for a long time. How did Philip Freneau see himself? What were his targets and how did he try to reach them? This paper examines Freneau's look on his role as an author on his poetry and plans. What kind of influences affected or promoted his career? Regarding his own poems "To an Author", "The City Poet" and "To a New England Poet" his description of an author's life - and therefore his life - will become apparent. Furthermore, a closer look on his contemporaries, the Connecticut Wits, especially Dwight, Barlow and Bryant will display how independent and original Freneau's writing was, and what kind of relationships he had towards these American authors. At the same time his relationship towards British poets is interesting: He thought he rejected most of their writing; but was he really not influenced by them at all? Could it be that he sometimes even copied parts of their work? After having a short look on other intertextual influences like Greek mythology, verses from the Bible and Classic forms, this paper will look back on his life in a retrospective way and analyse his attitude towards himself. Did Freneau manage to reach his goals or did he lose sight of them?

The analysis will be based on a set of hypotheses derived from recent research on the topic (cf. Carter et al. 2007, Poguntke et al. 2007). In the first part, I will provide a theoretical background on the meaning of "Europeanisation" (chapter 2.1), on its significance for the Italian government system (chapter 2.2) and on its implication for national parties (chapter 2.3) in order to conceptualise the use of the term in the present paper. Subsequently, I will briefly describe the principal features of the party chosen for the case study with reference to its origin, development, electoral evolution, organisation and political discourse (chapter 3). In the fourth chapter, I will come to the analysis of the programmatic and organisational change of the party, examining its stance towards the European Union, the role of party leadership and EU-specialists, and the significance of collateral organisations. In the conclusion, I will summarize the findings of the analysis to discuss the viability of the hypotheses. After all, I will try to offer an outlook concerning the principal problems encountered during the analysis and offering consequently a critical evaluation on the sense of Europeanization of national political parties as a new research agenda.

The history of the smaller European countries is rather neglected in the teaching of European history at university level. In earlier ages it as even more difficult to the region set parameters, again reflecting Europe as a whole, when tribes and kingdoms stretched across expanses not limited to the present states of Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Nevertheless, its parts did demonstrate many common traits and similar developments that differentiated them from surrounding countries and lent them a distinct character. Internationally, the region often served both as a mediator for and a buffer to the surrounding great powers, France, Britain, and Germany; an important role still played today as Belgium and the Netherlands have increasingly become involved in the broader process of European integration, in which they often share the same interest and follow parallel policies. This highly illustrated volume serves as an ideal introduction to the rich history of the Low Countries for students and the generally interested reader alike.
