In Holland's opinion texts contain autobiographical elements, or are totally autobiographical. In the case of The Chrysanthemums this is not true, although there are at least some biographical elements in the story. Elisa Allen, the main character, has been suggested to be Steinbeck's second wife Carol, because of the description of her outward appearance (bulky figure, strong, energetic, ...). Additionally, the Steinbecks, like the Allens in the story, had no children at the time the story was written. Owing to the fact that these elements are not significant to the story itself, they are neglected in our interpretation. However, the short story 'The Chrysanthemums' does not tie the reader down to a certain interpretation. A psychoanalytical approach appears as practicable as a feminist or a phenomenological one. The central theme in the story is Elisa's frustration. She is the main character, the reader's attention is focused on her throughout the story. In our analysis the reasons for her development as well as the source of her frustration, the different symbolisms and metaphors will be discussed from several perspectives. In the phenomenological approach we can see to what extent the reader influences the text - an explanation for the feminist and psychological approaches following on. In the feminist approach we will mostly focus on Elisa's character as her behavior gives indications of her frustration: Elisa is forced to play a role, which is determined by her gender. This role strongly influences her sense of identity and her behavior; moreover, it gives rise to her conflict and frustration. The psychoanalytic approach also concentrates on Elisa, for she is the main character and the other characters are closely connected with her. And it is the three of them that form the reader's psychological background.

Nach Ansicht der Antifeministen selbst richteten sich ihre emanzipationsfeindlichen Bestrebungen keineswegs gegen die Frauen an sich, sondern hatten im Gegenteil sogar zum Ziel, diese zu schützen. Den Ursachen für diese emanzipationsfeindliche Grundhaltung versucht der erste Teil der Arbeit nachzugehen: Wer waren die Trägergruppen des Antifeminismus? Was waren ihre Motive? Auf welche misogynen Traditionen konnten sie sich berufen? Und wie sahen sie die Rolle der Frau in der Gesellschaft? Those conditions have enabled constructions of women as a collective historical subject-in-process. The concept of Gender was developed to question and contest the naturalization of sexual difference in multiple areas of struggle. ¿Feminist theory and practice around gender seek to explain and change historical systems of sexual difference, whereby ¿men¿ and ¿women¿ are socially constructed and positioned in relations of hierarchy and antagonism.¿ (Haraway 1991). The refusal to become or to remain a ¿gendered¿ ¿woman¿ or ¿man¿ is a political challenge also against the imaginary narrative of sex and race. Gender refers primarily but not exclusively to women. It defines the term ¿women¿ as a very broad and internally differentiated category that includes differences as the highly relevant variables of class, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and age. Over time, different approaches were developed to interpret differences in communication style between ¿men¿ and ¿women¿. In the first part of this work I will try to find out: What are the causes for gender-related variation? In the second part I will look at two case studies, ¿Complaint stories¿ by Susanne Günthner and ¿TV discussions¿ by Helga Kotthoff, in order to answer the intertwined question: What are the consequences of gender-related variation?

Although Aurora Leigh offers material for a much broader analysis of feminism, this paper will focus on the main character and narrator, Aurora Leigh herself. Although characters such as Marian Erle and Lady Waldemar also present interesting figures for further study, extending the analysis to them would be beyond the scope of this paper. As this paper concentrates on the feminist ideal in relation to a woman¿s vocation as an artist, Aurora Leigh best exemplifies this dynamic. Beginning by addressing Auroräs education and early career in order to demonstrate her progression from a traditional concept of love and work, this paper will follow her development as she rejects conventional opposition to arrive at a fuller understanding of life as a female artist. Possible alternative readings, such as the argument that Aurora ultimately sacrifices her artistic strivings for a conventional marriage, will also be discussed in order to support the thesis.
