GRIN Feminist, phenomenological and psychoanalytic approaches to "The Chrysanthemums" by John Ernst Steinbeck
Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 2,69 CHF (+0,35 CHF)Seminar paper from the year 1997 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: very good, University of Vienna (Anglistics/American Studies), course: Linguistic Seminar: Applications of Theories of Discourse, language: English, abstract: According to Norman Holland, a story deals with the author, the author's relationship to his work or what he creates. In Holland's opinion texts contain autobiographical elements, or are totally autobiographical. In the case of The Chrysanthemums this is not true, although there are at least some biographical elements in the story. Elisa Allen, the main character, has been suggested to be Steinbeck's second wife Carol, because of the description of her outward appearance (bulky figure, strong, energetic, ...). Additionally, the Steinbecks, like the Allens in the story, had no children at the time the story was written. Owing to the fact that these elements are not significant to the story itself, they are neglected in our interpretation. However, the short story 'The Chrysanthemums' does not tie the reader down to a certain interpretation. A psychoanalytical approach appears as practicable as a feminist or a phenomenological one. The central theme in the story is Elisa's frustration. She is the main character, the reader's attention is focused on her throughout the story. In our analysis the reasons for her development as well as the source of her frustration, the different symbolisms and metaphors will be discussed from several perspectives. In the phenomenological approach we can see to what extent the reader influences the text - an explanation for the feminist and psychological approaches following on. In the feminist approach we will mostly focus on Elisa's character as her behavior gives indications of her frustration: Elisa is forced to play a role, which is determined by her gender. This role strongly influences her sense of identity and her behavior; moreover, it gives rise to her conflict and frustration. The psychoanalytic approach also concentrates on Elisa, for she is the main character and the other characters are closely connected with her. And it is the three of them that form the reader's psychological background.

Was waren ihre Motive?

University Of Illinois Press Layne, L: Feminist Technology
Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 152,00 CHFIn this collection, feminist scholars trained in diverse fields consider these questions by examining a range of products, tools, and technologies that were specifically designed for and marketed to women. Evaluating the claims that such products are liberating for women, the contributors focus on case studies of menstrual-suppressing birth control pills, home pregnancy tests, tampons, breast pumps, Norplant, anti-fertility vaccines, and microbicides. In examining these various products, this volume explores ways of actively intervening to develop better tools for designing, promoting, and evaluating feminist technologies.

Random House LLC US The Complete Persepolis
Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 3,99 CHFHere, in one volume: Marjane Satrapi's best-selling, internationally acclaimed graphic memoir of growing up as a girl in Iran during the revolution has for twenty years been a classroom staple, a feminist manifesto, and one of the most popular and widely known graphic novels of all time. "A stunning graphic memoir...a wholly original achievement in the form." — The New York Times Persepolis is the story of Satrapi's unforgettable childhood and coming of age within a large and loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private life and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming — both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland. It is the chronicle of a girlhood and adolescence at once outrageous and familiar, a young life entwined with the history of her country yet filled with the universal trials and joys of growing up. Edgy, searingly observant, and candid, often heartbreaking but threaded throughout with raw humor and hard-earned wisdom — Persepolis is a stunning work from one of the most highly regarded, singularly talented graphic artists at work today.

GRIN Causes and consequences of ¿gendered¿ communication
Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 2,69 CHF (+0,35 CHF)Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin (Institut für Englische Philologie), course: Linguistic Gender Studies, language: English, abstract: As Donna Haraway states, all the modern feminist meanings of gender, despite differences, have roots in Simone de Beauvoir¿s claim that ¿one is not born a woman¿ (de Beauvoir, 1949; 1952, p.249) and in post-Second World War social conditions. Those conditions have enabled constructions of women as a collective historical subject-in-process. The concept of Gender was developed to question and contest the naturalization of sexual difference in multiple areas of struggle. ¿Feminist theory and practice around gender seek to explain and change historical systems of sexual difference, whereby ¿men¿ and ¿women¿ are socially constructed and positioned in relations of hierarchy and antagonism.¿ (Haraway 1991). The refusal to become or to remain a ¿gendered¿ ¿woman¿ or ¿man¿ is a political challenge also against the imaginary narrative of sex and race. Gender refers primarily but not exclusively to women. It defines the term ¿women¿ as a very broad and internally differentiated category that includes differences as the highly relevant variables of class, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and age. Of interest are the visible and invisible power mechanisms that influence women¿s access to responsibility in social, economic, political, religious, intellectual and cultural life. ¿Male¿ and ¿female¿ are culturally produced, socially constructed categories and language is often seen as part of what constructs, maintains and reflects these categories. But on the other hand, we need categories to be able to analyse, study and describe in order to find solutions for change. Gender is transdisciplinary and a study of language, that is an essential basis for active participation in society is important. Today¿s gender topics are not only of importance for ¿women¿. In a continuously changing society they are also of concern for ¿men¿ and require their active participation in a restructuring of society. A discussion and (re)negotiation of these issues needs participants who can and will take part equally. Over time, different approaches were developed to interpret differences in communication style between ¿men¿ and ¿women¿. In the first part of this work I will try to find out: What are the causes for gender-related variation? In the second part I will look at two case studies, ¿Complaint stories¿ by Susanne Günthner and ¿TV discussions¿ by Helga Kotthoff, in order to answer the intertwined question: What are the consequences of gender-related variation?
