In diesem Beitrag gehen wir der Natur und dem Wesen der Information aus gegenwärtiger wissenschaftlicher und erkenntnistheoretischer Sicht nach. Wir verfolgen dabei die These, dass Information nicht nur für das Verständnis vom Aufbau der Welt grundlegend ist, sondern auch fundamentale Bedeutung für den physikalischen Aufbau der Welt hat. Dies erfolgt auf der Basis der Frage nach dem Realen, d. h. der Rolle der Information als wirklichkeitsschaffendes Phänomen für den wahrnehmenden Menschen, und dem heutigen wissenschaftlichen Verständnis dazu. Vier Stränge naturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisbildung werden dabei verfolgt: Zunächst konzentrieren wir uns auf die Informationstheorie und auf die Thermodynamik. Wichtige Aspekte der Quantenphysik und des Quanten-Computing sowie schliesslich Aspekte der Evolution und der Genetik bilden die beiden weiteren Stränge. Dabei berücksichtigen wir auch Denkansätze, die der Information als physikalisches Phänomen eine Bedeutung zuweisen. Die naturwissenschaftlichen Gesichtspunkte werden um einen Diskurs über relevante Aspekte von Statistik und Logik ergänzt. Statistik repräsentiert Information unter Einbeziehung des Aspekts Zufall und bildet in der Quantenphysik den Weg zur Beschreibung des Realen. Eine Ergänzung der klassischen Logik durch die sogenannte intuitionistische Logik basiert auf der Nachvollziehbarkeit von Aussagen bzw. der repräsentierten Information. Damit erhält die Information durch die Konstruktion aus ihrer Repräsentation eine wahrnehmbare Realität. Als wesentliches Ergebnis wird gezeigt, dass Information als neue „Quintessenz“ (in Anlehnung an die Quintessentia der Antike) verstanden werden kann, die nicht nur in das Bild der Naturwissenschaften und der Philosophie passt, sondern deren Wesen auch das Verständnis zur Verbindung zwischen der erfahrbaren Natur und der nicht verstehbaren Natur - weil unserem klassischem Naturverständnis entzogen - zu erfassen hilft.
