KNV Besorgung Jewish Writings
Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 2,89 CHF (+0,35 CHF)Although Hannah Arendt is not primarily known as a Jewish thinker, she probably wrote more about Jewish issues than any other topic. As a young adult in Germany, she wrote about German Jewish history. After moving to France in 1933, she helped Jewish youth immigrate to Palestine. During her years in Paris, her principle concern was the transformation of antinomianism from prejudice to policy, which would culminate in the Nazi "final solution." After France fell, Arendt escaped from an internment camp and made her way to America. There she wrote articles calling for a Jewish army to fight the Nazis. After the war, she supported the creation of a Jewish homeland in a binational (Arab-Jewish) state of Israel. Arendt's original conception of political freedom cannot be fully grasped apart from her experience as a Jew. In 1961 she attended Adolf Eichmann's trial in Jerusalem. Her report, Eichmann in Jerusalem, provoked an immense controversy, which culminated in her virtual excommunication from the worldwide Jewish community. Today that controversy is the subject of serious re-evaluation, especially among younger people in the United States, Europe, and Israel. The publication of The Jewish Writings-much of which has never appeared before-traces Arendt's life and thought as a Jew. It will put an end to any doubts about the centrality, from beginning to end, of Arendt's Jewish experience.

GRIN 'Black, Jewish, Interracial - a contradiction ?'
Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 2,49 CHF (+0,35 CHF)Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1-, Frankfurt, course: black and jewish women writers, language: English, abstract: During the semester we read a lot of texts by different authors. There were a lot of questions that we raised in class about race, gender, identity and religion. We found out that there was a lot of prejudice on both the Black and the Jewish side. It was important for me to know whether it is possible to unite both black and Jewish parts of one¿s identity or one has to give up one part of his or her heritage in favour of the other. In my paper I would like to try to find out if there is a contradiction in being both black and Jewish from the point of view of Jewish religion. I want to try to show that there is no contradiction to be found and that the prejudice against people of colour does not come from the Jewish tradition. As a Jew it is important to me to try to understand why many partners in interracial relationships were rejected by their families, what played the most important role ¿ the race or the religion, and why many of them felt compelled to throw away their Judaism. Why could not they be both black and Jewish? Is it only the race issue that made them abandon their Judaism, or was it only a kind of justification or excuse? When parents refused to keep contact with their children was it because of race or because they were marrying a Gentile person? Would there be any difference if the non Jewish person were white? Would it hurt less? Or maybe it would be easier to hide? On the other hand, there are plenty of examples of Black converts to Judaism. It is very hard to convert and for a black person even harder ¿ so what makes them do it? I do not hope to answer all the questions that I have raised but I would like at least to touch some of the points in this sensitive issue.

University Press Group Slezkine, Y: The Jewish Century
Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 5,49 CHF"Yuri Slezkine has written an extraordinary book with continual surprises. A landmark work."--Ronald Suny, University of Chicago"I can think of few works that match the conceptual range, polemical sharpness, and sheer elan of "The Jewish Century." An extraordinary book: analytically acute, lyrical, witty, and disturbing all at once."--Benjamin Nathans, author of "Beyond the Pale: The Jewish Encounter with Late Imperial Russia""Yuri Slezkine's book is at the same time very personal and very erudite. A blend of political and cultural history at its best, it is a splendid work, beautifully written. A true accomplishment by a master historian."--Jan T. Gross, author of "Neighbors""Once every few decades, a book forces a reevaluation of basic assumptions in a field. Yuri Slezkine's passionate and brilliant tour de force not only challenges received wisdom about Russian and Soviet Jews, but just as provocatively overturns the uniqueness that many ascribe to Jewish history altogether. "The Jewish Century" is a work sure to spark heated debate not only about the Jews, but also about what it means to be modern."--David Biale, editor, "Cultures of the Jews: A New History"""The Jewish Century" is an extraordinarily stimulating and ambitious piece of work that invites debate and controversy. Slezkine's account is subtle, beautifully written, and very moving; it combines humor, irony, and understated passion."--Tim McDaniel, author of "The Agony of the Russian Idea" (Princeton)"This is a strong, well-documented, passionately argued, original, and bold essay on history, or the ideology of history, in what I called "a Jewish century" (see my Language in "Time of Revolution"). Onewants to argue with the author on many pages of the manuscript, but it is such a powerful, sweeping statement that it must be left whole and intact, as a central position in future arguments on modernity, the twentieth century, and the history of the Jews."--Benjamin Harshav, Yal

375 Media GmbH Shtetl Superstars-Funky Jewish Sounds From Around

GRIN A comparison of selected contemporary Jewish American prose by Allen Hoffman
Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 2,49 CHF (+0,35 CHF)Essay from the year 2009 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1, Martin Luther University (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Hauptseminar 'Contemporary Jewish American Writers', language: English, abstract: About twenty years ago Bonnie K. Lyons suggested that every writer, regardless of which cultural origin, writes out of a culture serving as the battlefield of conflicting visions and values. Eventually, the writer may either embrace or attack his cultural heritage. At a first glance it seems to be indefinite where to pigeonhole the abstract above regarding to Lyons'ndistinction but after opening oneself to the tales of the reviewed contemporary Jewish American writer the classification becomes definite. Taken from one of his short stories, the excerpt gives a brief glimpse into the authentic, exhilarant writing of Allen Hoffman. Truly refreshing characters who argue about things of mundane and devout significance as well as the usage of partially genuine parallels to the autho himself determine Hoffman's prose which has sustainable effects on readers. He covers Jews, Jewish values, and idiosyncratic Jewish topics as actually urgent and particular characteristics of Jewish American prose. Although his literature comprises humorous and ironic valuations the respect and appreciation for the Jewish culture in times of clashes between tradition and renewal never gets lost.

GRIN Thane Rosenbaum: Elijah Visible - a mirror of Jewish life torn between history and tradition and contemporary American society
Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 2,89 CHF (+0,35 CHF)Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1, Martin Luther University, language: English, abstract: Introduction ¿He writes like he talks and talks like he writes¿ Although the cruelties people of Europe had to suffer from during the early decades of the 20th century, when Adolf Hitler began to establish his Nazi-regime, are part of a sad and dark chapter in German history, the aftermaths of the Rassengesetze, the war itself and the concentration camps are still shaking the minds of those who are faced with this issue during their studies, as well as the memories and lives of the people which either had to live according to the ideologies of the Third Reich and experience the tortures and pain the Nazis had brought upon them, or belong to the younger generation of those people¿s descendants. Thane Rosenbaum himself is one of them, a member of the generation whose parents had been there, had to live during the Third Reich and had survived the Holocaust. His novel Elijah Visible treats the issue of Nazi-Germany, the concentration camps and the consequences of this brutal era of German politics and ideologies from a rather indirect Jewish point of view (for further explanation cf. 2.1). During the tenor of this work the author, Thane Rosenbaum, shall be introduced and his novel-in-stories Elijah Visible will be analyzed with the help of three selected short stories; the structure of the complete novel and connections between single stories will be illustrated. It is expounded in how far and in which manner the author¿s past and family background have influenced the (events described throughout the) stories and thus, which autobiographical elements can be found. The last chapter will lay the focus on Rosenbaum¿s language and style as well as the purpose of writing his novel. This work is written in American English. [...]

Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 6,99 CHFReligions and religious teachings do not descend from heaven, but rather grow out of certain distinct situations. Religious beliefs point toward concrete surroundings and forms of life that they in turn mirror. This cultural history shows how a Jewish movement surrounding the person of Jesus and later Greek Christianity became a unified Roman state religion still bearing the legacy of antique culture. This volume attempts to translate Christian tenets and beliefs into modern and post-modern terms. In this sense it also offers a new hermeneutics of belief.

University of California Hentoff, N: At the Jazz Band Ball
Anbieter: Orellfuessli.ch Preis: 7,29 CHFNat Hentoff, renowned jazz critic, civil liberties activist, and fearless contrarian—“I’m a Jewish atheist civil-libertarian pro-lifer”—has lived through much of jazz’s history and has known many of jazz’s most important figures, often as friend and confidant. Hentoff has been a tireless advocate for the neglected parts of jazz history, including forgotten sidemen and -women. This volume includes his best recent work—short essays, long interviews, and personal recollections. From Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong to Ornette Coleman and Quincy Jones, Hentoff brings the jazz greats to life and traces their art to gospel, blues, and many other forms of American music. At the Jazz Band Ball also includes Hentoff’s keen, cosmopolitan observations on a wide range of issues. The book shows how jazz and education are a vital partnership, how free expression is the essence of liberty, and how social justice issues like health care and strong civil rights and liberties keep all the arts—and all members of society—strong.
