Scientific Representation - Bas C. Van Fraassen - Bog
Sælger: Saxo.com Pris: 714.95 dkr (+29.95 dkr)Bas C. van Fraassen presents an original exploration of how we represent the world. Science represents natural phenomena by means of theories, as well as in many concrete ways by such means as pictures, graphs, table-top models, and computer simulations. Scientific Representation begins with an inquiry into the nature of representation in general, drawing on such diverse sources as Plato's dialogues, the development of perspectival drawing in the Renaissance, and the geometric styles of modelling in modern physics. Starting with Mach's and Poincaré's analyses of measurement and the 'problem of coordination', van Fraassen then presents a view of measurement outcomes as representations. With respect to the theories of contemporary science he defends an empiricist structuralist version of the 'picture theory' of science, through an inquiry into the paradoxes that came to light in twentieth-century philosophies of science. Van Fraassen concludes with an analysis of the complex relationship between appearance and reality in the scientific world-picture.

Scientific Soapmaking: The Chemistry Of The Cold Process - Kevin M. Dunn - Bog
Sælger: Saxo.com Pris: 329.95 dkr (+29.95 dkr)Until now, there were just two kinds of books on soapmaking. Books for the commodity soap industry emphasized the economical production of soap by the ton and were written for those with a background in chemistry and chemical engineering. Books for the emerging craft industry emphasized the production of high-quality soap by the pound and were aimed at those familiar with the format of cookbooks. Makers of handcrafted soap often wish they had paid more attention in chemistry class so that the information of the commodity soap books would be accessible to them. Scientific Soapmaking answers that call by bridging the gap between the technical and craft literatures. It explains the chemistry of fats, oils, and soaps, and it teaches sophisticated analytical techniques that can be carried out using equipment and materials familiar to makers of handcrafted soap. Presented in a college textbook format, Scientific Soapmaking guides students and individual soapmakers alike to formulate questions about soap and design experiments to answer those questions scientifically.

Scientific Advertising - Claude Hopkins - Bog
Sælger: Saxo.com Pris: 169.95 dkr (+29.95 dkr)"Scientific Advertising" is a seminal book written by Claude C. Hopkins, a renowned advertising pioneer, and copywriter. First published in 1923, the book is considered a classic in the field of advertising and marketing. It is known for introducing the concept of data-driven, measurable advertising techniques, which significantly influenced the advertising industry and continues to be relevant in the digital marketing era. Key aspects of "Scientific Advertising" include: Measurable Advertising: Claude Hopkins advocated for the use of scientific methods to measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns. He believed that advertising should not be based on guesswork or creative intuition but on empirical evidence and data. Advertisers should track and measure the results of their campaigns to determine what works and what doesn't. Emphasis on Direct Response: Hopkins stressed the importance of direct response advertising, where the goal is to elicit a specific, immediate response from the audience, such as making a purchase, filling out a form, or taking a specific action. This allows for precise measurement and optimization of ad campaigns. A/B Testing: Hopkins popularized the concept of A/B testing or split testing, where two versions of an ad are compared to determine which one performs better. This approach enables advertisers to refine their messages and strategies based on actual results. Focus on Headlines: The book emphasizes the significance of the headline in advertising. According to Hopkins, the headline is the most critical element of an ad, as it determines whether the reader will continue to engage with the content or move on. He provided insights on creating compelling headlines that grab attention and drive interest. Writing Persuasively: Hopkins discussed the art of persuasive writing in advertising, emphasizing that advertisements should be clear, concise, and written in a way that resonates with the needs and desires of the target audience. He stressed the importance of highlighting the unique selling proposition (USP) of a product or service. ROI-Focused Advertising: "Scientific Advertising" introduced the idea that every advertising dollar spent should be seen as an investment with an expected return on investment (ROI). Advertisers should aim to maximize the return for their advertising expenditure. Evergreen Principles: Despite being published almost a century ago, many of the principles and strategies discussed in the book remain relevant today, especially in the context of digital advertising and online marketing. "Scientific Advertising" by Claude Hopkins remains a foundational work in the field of advertising and marketing. It emphasizes the importance of data-driven decision-making, the need for continuous testing and optimization, and the focus on delivering clear and persuasive messages to target audiences. This book has had a profound and lasting impact on the advertising industry and is a valuable resource for...

Scientific Advertising - Claude C. Hopkins - Bog
Sælger: Saxo.com Pris: 149.95 dkr (+29.95 dkr)Claude C. Hopkins (1866–1932) was one of the great advertising pioneers. He believed advertising existed only to sell something and should be measured and justified by the results it produced. He worked for various advertisers, including Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company, Swift & Company and Dr. Shoop's patent medicine company. At the age of 41, he was hired by Albert Lasker owner of Lord & Thomas advertising in 1907 at a salary of $185,000 a year, Hopkins insisted copywriters research their clients' products and produce "reason-why" copy. He believed that a good product and the atmosphere around it was often its own best salesperson, and as such he was a great believer in sampling. To track the results of his advertising, he used key-coded coupons and then tested headlines, offers and propositions against one another. He used the analysis of these measurements to continually improve his ad results, driving responses and the cost effectiveness of his clients' advertising spend. Hopkins is one of the father's of modern day marketing. While working for the Bissel Carpet Sweeper Company, at Hopkins' sent out five thousand letters offering carpet sweepers as Christmas presents - one thousand people sent in orders. He also convinced Bissel manufacturers to offer more variety of carpet sweepers, such as making them with twelve different types of wood. Immediately after these changes, Bissel sold two hundred fifty thousand in three weeks. His book Scientific Advertising was published in 1923, following his retirement from Lord & Thomas, where he finished his career as president and chairman. This book was followed, in 1927, by his autobiographical work My Life in Advertising. He died in 1932. Charles Duhigg credits Hopkins with popularizing tooth brushing, as a result of Hopkins' campaigns for Pepsodent. (wikipedia.org)

Scientific And Horrific Stories - H. G. Wells - Bog
Sælger: Saxo.com Pris: 154.95 dkr (+29.95 dkr)Scientific and Horrific Stories is a collection of short fiction by H. G. Wells. Despite his humble beginnings as the son of English servants, H. G. Wells would become one of the most revered writers of his day. His stories of adventure, utopia, and terror inspired such vastly different figures as Vladimir Nabokov, Winston Churchill, Jorge Luis Borges, and Sinclair Lewis. Many of his novels have been adapted for film, theater, radio, and television, including The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), and The War of the Worlds (1898). Scientific and Horrific Stories includes twenty-six tales from across Wells’ career. “The Chronic Argonauts,” written while Wells was recuperating from an illness with friends in Stoke-on-Trent, is a story of time travel set in rural Wales that predates his beloved The Time Machine by seven years. “Æpyornis Island” is a terrifying tale of greed and survival that originally appeared in an 1894 issue of the Pall Mall Budget . Tasked with finding rare Aepyornis eggs, a rugged Englishman named Butcher ventures to a remote swamp on the island of Madagascar. When one of the eggs unexpectedly hatches, he is left stranded and at the mercy of a vicious creature that was believed to be extinct. In “The Diamond Maker,” which also appeared in the Pall Mall Budget , a destitute man tells a wealthy businessman about his years as a maker of artificial diamonds, a time of great promise that ultimately led to his downfall. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of H. G. Wells’ Scientific and Horrific Stories is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Scientific Advertising - Claude C. Hopkins - Bog
Sælger: Saxo.com Pris: 164.95 dkr (+29.95 dkr)The legendary Claude C Hopkins wrote 'Scientific Advertising', his classic on the art of advertising, nearly 100 years ago. It is a tribute to the vision of this pioneer of modern advertising that the insights contained in this slim volume remain, for the most part, relevant today. Digital channels may have superseded the print media that dominated in his day, but the principles of how to create a compelling message that sells to potential customers are as true now as they were when Hopkins was formulating them. Alastair Campbell cites Hopkins as a major influence in his successful marketing career. He has approached the task of revising and updating 'Scientific Advertising' with the care and reverence of an acolyte, and the experience of putting these theories to the test in today's marketplace. Readers will find up-to-the-minute references and examples drawn from the world of television, the Web, social media, handheld digital devices, live streaming and options for instant communication that Hopkins could not have anticipated but which we now use daily.
