What is a meme? First coined by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene, a meme is any idea, behavior, or skill that can be transferred from one person to another by imitation: stories, fashions, inventions, recipes, songs, ways of plowing a field or throwing a baseball or making a sculpture. The meme is also one of the most important--and controversial--concepts to emerge since The Origin of Species appeared nearly 150 years ago. Ses fusains, ses gravures, ses lithographies, tout ce qu’il appelait avec amour ses noirs ne fut apprécié que tardivement. Les difficultés du début de sa carrière l’avaient amené à chercher sa voie, lorsqu’il eut renoncé à accepter la contrainte des enseignements officiels. Autant pour s’éclairer sur soi-même que pour juger avec plus de précision les œuvres de ses contemporains, il fit de la critique d’art et collabora en 1868 et 1869 à la Gironde. Il écrivit d’autres souvenirs ou plutôt, comme il le dit lui-même, des confidences, des aveux, des témoignages. Ce sont des notes analogues qui sont éparses dans les carnets, tantôt avec une date, tantôt sans indication aucune. Quelquefois une réflexion ancienne a été reprise, transformée, raturée. D’autres sont répétées sous une forme presque identique. Sa haute conscience, son métier sûr font d’Odilon Redon l’un des Maîtres dignes de la glorieuse lignée de ceux pour lesquels l’art était un sacerdoce et non pas une carrière avantageuse. Ayant accompli sa tâche malgré tous les obstacles et reçu la récompense de son acharnement à perfectionner son art, après ce bel exemple d’une vie d’artiste noblement remplie, il nous offre ici ses pensées, comme une dernière gerbe de ces fleurs rayonnantes d’une vie surnaturelle et riante qu’il lui plût de créer au déclin de ses jours.
