My life with the Eskimo
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 44.31 $The plans of my second expedition took gradual shape during the years 1906-1907, while I was still north of the Arctic circle engaged in the work of my first expedition. It was once intended that I should be the ethnologist of the Leffingwell-Mikkelsen Arctic Expedition, sometimes known as the Anglo-American Polar Expedition, which sailed from Victoria, British Columbia, in the spring of 1906. When the proposal was made to me I found it an attractive one in everything except this: that the expedition's schooner, the Duchess of Bedford, was unprovided with auxiliary motive power, and my book knowledge of Arctic conditions made me fear that she would never reach the proposed site of operations, the west coast of Victoria Island. Mr. Leffingwell and I therefore agreed that I should not join the expedition in Victoria as did its other members, but should go overland and down the Mackenzie River to meet them at Herschel Island, which lies about eighty miles west of the Mackenzie delta. My reason was that if the expedition failed to get so far east I should be able to occupy my time profitably in the study of the scientifically unknown Mackenzie Eskimo. At that point the ice blocked her further advance until the season had become late and she was finally overtaken by winter on the north coast of Alaska at Flaxman Island.

From Both Sides of the River: A Family Portrait
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.84 $Anne Cutter Mikkelsen grew up in a boisterous Irish Catholic family in Anoka, Minnesota, on the banks of the Mississippi River. In awe of her larger-than-life parents—Mary Helen, a radio soap opera writer who later transformed herself into assistant to Simone (Simca) Beck in the South of France, and Darrah, a dashing WWII Navy flier and war hero who became an attorney and gentleman farmer—Anne and her seven siblings enjoyed an idyllic childhood. That is, until Anne turned sixteen, when her father vanished in the wilds of the Arctic. Inspired by her mother’s indomitable spirit, Anne goes on to study classical French cooking, and becomes a restaurateur and host of a TV cooking show. But despite her career success and pleasure in raising her four children, her father’s mysterious disappearance casts a profound shadow over Anne’s life. Two decades after losing her father, Anne discovers a record of her parents’ relationship—handwritten journals, letters, and one cryptic short story, which mystically appear when Anne needs them most. Seeking answers to what really happened to her father, Anne revisits her parents’ marriage, and is caught between what is memory and what is truth... and all that lies between. From Both Sides of the River is both an intimate portrait of a family, and the exhilarating story of how one woman’s journey into the past did indeed shine a new light on the people she loved. In illuminating her family’s story with tenderness and compassion, Anne helps us see our own.

Two Against the Ice: A Classic Arctic Survival Story and a Remarkable Account of Companionship in the Face of Adversity
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 139.99 $TWO AGAINST THE ICE is a classic tale of survival by an unheralded but important figure in the history of Arctic exploration. First published in Danish in 1955, it has never before been published in North America.Ejnar Mikkelsen was a man devoted to Arctic exploration. In 1910 he decided to search for the diaries of the ill-fated Mylius-Erichsen expedition, which had set out to prove that Robert Peary’s outline of the East Greenland coast was a myth, erroneous and presumably self-serving. Iver Iversen was a mechanic who joined Mikkelsen in Iceland when the expedition’s boat needed repair. Several months later, Mikkelsen and Iversen embarked on a journey during which they would suffer virtually every travail in the Arctic repertoire: implacable cold, scurvy, starvation, frostbite, snow blindness, plunges into icy seawater, Sisyphean sledging conditions, Vitamin A poisoning, debilitated dogs, apocalyptic storms, gaping crevasses, and assorted mortifications of the flesh. Mikkelsen’s diary was eaten by a bear. Three years of this, coupled with seemingly no hope of rescue, would drive most crazy, yet the two retained both their sanity and their humor. Indeed, what may have saved them was their refusal to become as desolate as their surroundings.“A classic of Arctic survival and a remarkable account of companionship in the face of adversity. ” -- From The Foreword
