Victims of the Latest Dance Craze (Dialogues on Dance #5)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 56.74 $A vibrant collection of poems. Victims of the Latest Dance Craze is the 1985 Lamont Poetry Selection, a distinguished award for an author's second book of poems. The book is well-made and handsomely illustrated with glyphlike graphics by Susan Micklem. Ommation Press, the publisher, has a history of dedicating itself to poetry concerned with dance and Eady's text is the fifth in the press's Dialogues on Dance Series. Ommation's longstanding focus on poetry and dance has earned it a solid reputation among poets concerned with this synthesis of creative forms and readers should be similarly informed about this publisher's particular excellence. Worthy alone of the price of the book is the poem 'Jazz Dancer." Its obsessive celebration of the jazzman's "war against/the obvious" results in a praiseful litany as the poet enunciates a lovely catalogue of theories about air, motion, kisses, "long glances from across a ballroom" and "certain kinds of thirst." The poem's leaping connections harmoniously join an odd geography of emotional and physical material into a most beautiful composition. Throughout this volume each reader will discover special favorites from among the 29 individual poems. Eady locates the dance in a marvelous array of possibilities: April, Johnny in his red shoes, umbrellas and the wooden pillars that hold up the roof, lip synchers, boom box totcrs, gravity, lipstick, crows on a windy roof, the allnight clerk who "behind the bullet-proof glass sways his hips." Throughout, the language is accessible and direct, clean in spirit and statement, delightfully innocent and honest. He doesn't pretend to know all the answers to the pop of fingers or the beat's bop, and in "The Poetic Interpretation of the Twist" admits with adept understatemerit " - . . Victims and Survivors - The Nazi Persecution of the Jews in the Netherlands, 1940-1945
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 44.99 $How was it possible, in a country like the Netherlands--a nation so proud of its traditions of liberalism and tolerance--that such a large proportion of Jewish citizens could fall victim to Nazi genocide, especially when Jews in France and Belgium fared markedly better? Bob Moore's comprehensive study, the first of its kind to appear in English in nearly 30 years, examines all the central elements of this question. Moore explores in detail the nature of the Nazi persecutors, their victims, and the specific circumstances of the German occupation of the Netherlands.

Victims of Circumstance, A Modern War Novel
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.05 $Victims of Circumstance is a slightly dark tale of soldiers and the Global War on Terror in the context of unfolding history that renders a rare glimpse from the margins into the real human dimensions of a modern conflict. While offering a unique story with realistic perspective, Victims echoes a broad range of works, including Black Hawk Down, The Thin Red Line and Good-bye To Some. The author is well qualified to tell this story, having joined the US Army as a Private in 1976 and retired in 2004 as a Lieutenant Colonel with 24 years of service that included duty since 1991 as an intelligence officer with Special Forces. His writing has appeared in numerous publications since 1989. Set on a ragged edge of the Global War on Terror in 2004 Uzbekistan, Victims is woven with tightly presented action and evocative descriptions. Complex, carefully compartmented characters operate largely alone by choice and as a result of decisions and actions, including the war, that thread through their lives and the isolated landscape. Accustomed to coping with life on their own terms, fast-breaking circumstances ultimately forge deeper bonds among the characters that transcend private battlefields and force them to confront fundamental questions.

Victims of Progress
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 76.43 $A newer edition of this book is available at the following web address: https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781442226937 Victims of Progress provides a global overview of the struggle between small-scale indigenous societies and the colonists and corporate developers that invaded their territories over the past 200 years to extract resources. It shows how these small-scale societies have survived by organizing politically to defend their basic human rights, and shows that they are now being impacted by oil and natural gas development and tropical deforestation, as well as global warming. This compelling account of the effects of technology and development on indigenous peoples throughout the world examines major issues of intervention: social engineering, economic development, self-determination, health and disease, and ecocide. Victims of Progress provides a provocative context in which to think about civilization and its costs. In this new fifth edition, Bodley provides extensive new discussions on the increased political power of the Nunavut in the Canadian Arctic, the role of indigenous people in the Arctic Council, shifts in Aboriginal rights in Australia, and many new developments on the impact of global warming on indigenous populations around the world.

Victim's Song
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.63 $The unremitting horror of the consequences of violent crime has never been depicted with such relentless honesty and anger as in The Victim's Song.Eric Kaminsky, a twenty-two-year-old music student was robbed, stabbed in the back, and then thrown on the tracks of a New York City subway, where he died. In this book, Professor Alice R. Kaminsky, Eric's mother, gives a powerful account of this senseless tragedy. She describes the continuing pain she suffers from the loss of her only child and exposes the inadequacies of our flawed criminal justice system in her discussion of the trial of his murderers. This is a shocking book because the author expresses her anger honestly and without offering any of the palliatives of the bereavement books. No one who reads The Victim's Song will ever forget the torment experienced by the victims of crime in our increasingly violent society. Nor will anyone who reads The Victim's Song ever forget Eric Kaminsky.

The Victims Return: Survivors of the Gulag After Stalin
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 71.94 $Joseph Stalin's reign of terror in the Soviet Union has been called "the other holocaust." Over the course of 24 years, more innocent men, women, and children perished than died in Hitler's murder of European Jews. This book originated 30 years ago when Stephen F. Cohen, a professor of Russian studies and history at New York University, first began researching the lives of those victims released after Stalin's death. There was precious little information available, and many of the victims were still afraid, but Cohen persisted, and through the years accumulated the remarkable stories of their return to society.

The Victim of Prejudice
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.69 $Mary Hays was an outspoken Radical intellectual in the turbulent decade of the 1790’s. She argued vehemently for the need to recognise the moral and rational qualities of women, the necessity of a better system of education for girls, and the importance of giving women without fortunes a career without ‘servitude in prostitution.’ The Victim of Prejudice―Hays’ second novel, first published in 1799―is a powerful indictment of man-made institutions such as the courts and legislative systems which favour persons of wealth and rank. In the novel the metaphor of women’s confinement becomes real as the heroine’s worst nightmares, her horrors and sense of helplessness become a physical reality. The Victim of Prejudice is of great interest for its strong feminist content, and it is both powerful and moving as a literary work; this edition makes this important late eighteenth-century text again available to a wide readership.
