Paths of Armor: The Fifth Armored Division in World War II (Divisional Series, 27th)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 119.95 $The Fifth Armored Division’s record of achievement in World War Two is unsurpassed by that of any other division. It led the Normandy breakthrough; it sprang the Falaise trap which meant the death of the Seventh German Army and the Field Marshal who commanded it; it was the first division to reach the Eure River, the Seine, and the Our; it cut off near Mons thousands of Germans; it was the first to enter Germany and at the end of the war it was nearer to Berlin than any combat group in the American Army. This is the history of that division and the men and tanks that fought in it. Vic Hillery and Major Emerson Hurley, two veterans of the division, have provided a thorough account of this fascinating division in World War Two, from its inception in 1941 through to the end of the war. Hillery and Hurley fully explain how the Fifth Division, under the tactically brilliant leadership of Jack E. Heard, Sereno E. Brett and Lunsford E. Oliver, were able to revolutionise armored warfare. With detailed analysis the authors reconstruct the battles of the division and explain how they were able to carve a path through Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, Alsace, the Rhineland and Central Europe. Paths of Armor is essential reading for anyone interested in the Western Front of World War Two and the development of tank warfare that occurred through that war.

Climb to Conquer: The Untold Story of WWII's 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.64 $Few stories from the "greatest generation" are as unforgettable -- or as little known -- as that of the 10th Mountain Division. Today a versatile light infantry unit deployed around the world, the 10th began in 1941 as a crew of civilian athletes with a passion for mountains and snow. In this vivid history, adventure writer Peter Shelton follows the unique division from its conception on a Vermont ski hill, through its dramatic World War II coming-of-age, to the ultimate revolution it inspired in American outdoor life.In the late-1930s United States, rock climbing and downhill skiing were relatively new sports. But World War II brought a need for men who could handle extreme mountainous conditions -- and the elite 10th Mountain Division was born. Everything about it was unprecedented: It was the sole U.S. Army division trained on snow and rock, the only division ever to grow out of a sport. It had an un-matched number of professional athletes, college scholars, and potential officer candidates, and as the last U.S. division to enter the war in Europe, it suffered the highest number of casualties per combat day. This is the 10th's surprising, suspenseful, and often touching story.Drawing on years of interviews and research, Shelton re-creates the ski troops' lively, extensive, and sometimes experimental training and their journey from boot camp to the Italian Apennines. There, scaling a 1,500-foot "unclimbable" cliff face in the dead of night, they stunned their enemy and began the eventual rout of the German armies from northern Italy. It was a self-selecting elite, a brotherhood in sport and spirit. And those who survived (including the Sierra Club's David Brower, Aspen Skiing Corporation founder Friedl Pfeifer, and Nike cofounder Bill Bowerman, who developed the waffle-sole running shoe) turned their love of mountains into the thriving outdoor industry that has transformed the way Americans see (and play in) the natural world.

EOM: 57 Skew Fields: Theory of General Division Rings (Encyclopedia of Mathematics and its Applications)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 171.38 $Algebraists have studied noncommutative fields (also called skew fields or division rings) less thoroughly than their commutative counterparts. Most existing accounts have been confined to division algebras, i.e. skew fields that are finite dimensional over their center. This work offers the first comprehensive account of skew fields. It is based on the author's LMS Lecture Note Volume "Skew Field Constructions". The axiomatic foundation and a precise description of the embedding problem precedes an account of algebraic and topological construction methods. The author presents his general embedding theory with full proofs, leading to the construction of skew fields. The author has simplified his treatment of equations over skew fields and has extended it by the use of matrix methods. A separate chapter describes valuations and orderings on skew fields, with a construction applicable to free fields. Numerous exercises test the reader's understanding, presenting further aspects and open problems in concise form. Notes and comments at the end of chapters provide historical background. The book will appeal to researchers in algebra, logic, and algebraic geometry, as well as graduate students in these fields.

Up Hill with the Ski Troops
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.97 $This is my recollection of the 43 months and one day that I spent as a soldier in the U.S. Army, during World War Two. In no way does this pretend to be a history of The 10th Mountain Division, or even K Co. of the 87th. I was only one of thousands, so this is my memories of that conflict, forty years later. As I kept no journal, I have referred to the works of many other people, and have had help from many of you guys that were there with me. So to you who were there, you will disagree with parts of this. That's fine! You go ahead and write your recollections, and I'll disagree with you. Altho I've tried, I don't lay any claim that this is accurate. It boils down to MY recollections, and I'm not too serious about the whole thing. I've been wrong before. Ski Troops were the Mountain Infantry of WW Two. My outfit all the way was K Company, 87th Regiment, I Oth Mountain Division. The Up Hill part was the way it was from the time that the idea was conceived by a group, one of which was C. Minot, "Minnie," Dole, who is credited with being able to sell the idea of specially trained troops that would be trained in Winter Warfare to the Brass of the U.S. Army. That, my friends, was Up Hill all the way. Selecting a sight for Winter Training was an Up Hill task. CAMP HALE at Pando, Colorado was chosen. The camp was built at an elevation of 9500 feet. According to history the first unit to be activated was the 87th Battalion, on November 15th, 1941, just before Pearl Harbor. When we got to Camp Hale in 1943, everywhere you looked it was Up Hill. It seemed that every time we left camp it was Up Hill. We made an Amphibious landing on Kiska in 1943, that was Up Hill.
