Country Doctors Casebook: Tales from the North Woods (Midwest Reflections)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 52.95 $"Beautiful, humorous, and lucidly written, A Country Doctor's Casebook is a heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking treasure of American rural medical history. For those who may have become disenchanted about the craft of medicine, here the enchantment returns."Pierre Delattre, author of Woman on the Cross, Episodes, and Tales of a Dalai Lama "This pioneer physician's account of medicine, life, and death in the north of northern Minnesota is suffused by humanitarian warmth and humor. We all are there: Native Americans and immigrants, our lives beset by accidents and illness, and above all the love and dedication making us who we are, helped by our own Galen. A great read."Robert Treuer, author of The Tree Farm: Replanting a Life "A Country Doctor's Casebook is a delight--wonderfully written with a wry sense of humor. These stories ring true: compassionate, gentle, loving portraits of people for whom Dr. MacDonald cared deeply."David Hilfiker, md, author of Healing the Wounds: A Physician Looks at His Work and Not All of Us Are Saints: A Doctor?s Journey with the Poor

Doctor Turner's Casebook
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 61.59 $Call The Midwife is the BBC's most popular drama ever - that is what viewing figures tell us with over ten million viewers per episode. The Christmas edition is always reviewed as a 'must see' event, just as important to some families as the Queen's Speech. All the principal actors are now household names and one in particular over the past two seasons has dramatically come to the front of the show - Doctor Turner, played by Stephen McGann. He is now seen as the lynchpin of the series, not only overseeing the many childbirths across episodes, but also dealing with a multitude of diseases that strike the young, as accurately portrayed by the show's writer Heidi Thomas. Polio, meningitis, measles, scarlet fever and thalidomide have all been meticulously depicted on the show. This new book, will now reveal how a local doctor - such as Dr Turner - not only dealt with such cases, but also how he worked within the newly created National Health Service, as well as lived alongside his East End community. It will be a facsimile as well as a fictionalised diary from the character, all conceived and written by the show's writer Heidi Thomas. Stephen McGann will also contribute his own narrative having studied for an MA in medical science. Beautifully designed, it will make a lovely present for any fan of the series, as well as those wishing to find out more about the history of what life was really like in this period.

Doctor's Casebook in the Light of the Bible
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.75 $Paul Tournier has practised medicine in Geneva since 1928, as a physician who acquired psychiatric training and experience because he learned that many of his patients needed help going deeper than drugs or surgery. Many of his books are in paperback editions, including The Adventure of Living, Escape from Loneliness, Learning to Grow Old, Marriage Difficulties, The Meaning of Persons, The Person Reborn, A Place for You and The Strong and the Weak. About A Doctor's Casebook Dr William Barclay wrote in The Expository Times: `This is a beautiful book, written by a man who is skilled in medicine and wise towards God. It is so well translated that no one would know that it is a translation. Dr Tournier's mastery of Scripture is astonishing.' Alasdair Maclntyre wrote in The Guardian: `A book of many virtues. Dr Tournier faces the questions whicfi so many avoid. "Just how is divine power active in the world? Is not belief in such a power simply a retreat from science into magic?".' And the Church Times described the book as one 'of exceptional interest to all who are concerned with the problems of healing . . . a work of the deepest spiritual insight'.

An Irish Country Doctor (Irish Country Books)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.98 $Barry Laverty, M.B., can barely find the village of Ballybucklebo on a map when he first sets out to seek gainful employment there, but already he knows that there is nowhere he would rather live than in the emerald hills and dales of Northern Ireland. The proud owner of a spanking-new medical degree and little else in the way of worldly possessions, Barry jumps at the chance to secure a position as an assistant in a small rural practice. At least until he meets Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly. The older physician, whose motto is to never let the patients get the upper hand, has his own way of doing things. At first, Barry can't decide if the pugnacious O'Reilly is the biggest charlatan he has ever met, or the best teacher he could ever hope for. Through O'Reilly Barry soon gets to know all of the village's colorful and endearing residents, including:A malingering Major and his equally hypochondriacal wife;An unwed servant girl, who refuses to divulge the father of her upcoming baby;A slightly daft old couple unable to marry for lack of a roof; And a host of other eccentric characters who make every day an education for the inexperienced young doctor.Ballybucklebo is long way from Belfast, and Barry is quick to discover that he still has a lot to learn about the quirks and traditions of country life. But with pluck and compassion and only the slightest touch of blarney, he will find out more about life--and love--than he ever imagined back in medical school. An Irish Country Doctor is a charming and engrossing tale that will captivate readers from the very first page--and leave them yearning to visit the Irish countryside of days gone by.
