The Ultimate Engineer: The Remarkable Life of NASA's Visionary Leader George M. Low (Outward Odyssey: A People's History of Spaceflight)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.39 $From the late 1950s to 1976 the U.S. manned spaceflight program advanced as it did largely due to the extraordinary efforts of Austrian immigrant George M. Low. Described as the “ultimate engineer” during his career at NASA, Low was a visionary architect and leader from the agency’s inception in 1958 to his retirement in 1976. As chief of manned spaceflight at NASA, Low was instrumental in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. Low’s pioneering work paved the way for President Kennedy’s decision to make a lunar landing NASA’s primary goal in the 1960s. After the tragic 1967 Apollo 1 fire that took the lives of three astronauts and almost crippled the program, Low took charge of the redesign of the Apollo spacecraft, and he helped lead the program from disaster and toward the moon. In 1968 Low made the bold decision to go for lunar orbit on Apollo 8 before the lunar module was ready for flight and after only one Earth orbit test flight of the command and service modules. Under Low there were five manned missions, including Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing. Low’s clandestine negotiations with the Soviet Union resulted in a historic joint mission in 1975 that was the precursor to the Shuttle-Mir and International Space Station programs. At the end of his NASA career, Low was one of the leading figures in the development of the space shuttle in the early 1970s, and he was instrumental in NASA’s transition into a post-Apollo world. Afterward, he embarked on a distinguished career in higher education as a transformational president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, his alma mater. Chronicling Low’s escape from Nazi-occupied Austria to his helping land a man on the moon, The Ultimate Engineer sheds new light on one of the most fascinating and complex personalities of the golden age of U.S. manned space travel.

The School Principal: Visionary Leadership and Competent Management
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 52.97 $Over the past two decades, efforts to improve schools have significantly modified role expectations for principals. Today, school-level administrators are expected to be both visionary leaders and competent managers. Based on the conviction that administration is an amalgam of leadership and management, The School Principal emphasizes the need for practitioners to apply conceptual skills to make "what to do" decisions, to apply technical skills to make "how to do" decisions, and to apply relational skills to engage in democratic decision making. Kowalski frames the book with a discussion of the nature of schools, the roles of principals, and their need to improve schools. The book then provides a balanced treatment of leadership and management, covering issues of personal behavior, instructional leadership, relationship building issues, finances, facilities, personnel management, pupil services, and maintaining safe schools. The text closes with discussion of the vital aspects of practice for contemporary principals, addressing problem solving, collaborative change strategies, and personal commitment to being a principal. Special Features: Vignettes introduce the subject matter in the context of common challenges faced by practitioners. Knowledge-Based Questions and Skill-Based Activities prompt readers to engage with and reflect on the chapter content. The School Principal aligns with the Educational Leadership Consortium Council (ELCC) Standards. Treating principals as concurrently visionary leaders and competent managers, this excellent text addresses the needs of aspiring and practicing principals, providing the tools to build effective and efficient schools.

Daniel H. Burnham: Visionary Architect and Planner
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.42 $Daniel H. Burnham discovers the foundations of twentieth-century American architecture in the life and work of a man who dominated his era like few others: as an architect, city planner, businessman, philanthropist, and civic leader. Despite his importance to twentieth-century architecture, there are no monographs in print that cover such a full range of this extraordinary figure's work.Burnham helped create the Chicago school of architecture and built over 200 buildings in the city. With the famous Reliance Building, he heralded the glass skyscrapers of the twentieth century. His firm was one of the largest architectural firms in the world. D. H. Burnham and Company created such monumental buildings in Chicago as the famous Monadnock, Rand-McNally, and Rookery buildings, the Marshall Field Store, and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as the Flatiron building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C., all of which are fully illustrated here and newly analyzed.Aside from his work as an architect, Burnham was one of the founders of the City Beautiful movement, which grew out of an urgent turn-of-the-century need for chaotically growing American cities to develop on a more rational, planned scale. The City Beautiful movement ideas included beautifully designed Beaux-Arts buildings, increased park areas, better living conditions, and improved transportation. Included here is material on the World's Colombian Exposition of 1893, often considered the start of the movement; the 1901 Plan for Washington, D.C., developed in conjunction with Frederick Law Olmsted and Charles McKim of McKim Mead & White; and the Chicago Plan of 1909, which was so successful that after its publication he received requests to design twenty other American cities. This deluxe book fully explores all aspects of his work, the legacy of which lives on in the form of outstanding buildings, city plans, and cultural institutions, all still very much in use today.
