King Abdullah, Britain and the Making of Jordan (Cambridge Middle East Library, Series Number 13)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.91 $Because of his role in the partition of Palestine, King Abdullah has always been one of the most controversial figures in modern Middle Eastern history. This book is the first in-depth description and analysis of the historical and personal circumstances that made him so significant. Abdullah, a son of the Sharif of Mecca and a member of the Ottoman elite, emerged after the First World War as a contender for power in a Middle East dominated by Britain owing to his alliance with Britain in the Arab revolt. To his disappointment, he ended up in the arid territory of Transjordan. Within the constraints of British interests, he was left to make something of his lot. Since Transjordan had little to draw on to resist total dominance by Britain, Abdullah spent the remainder of his life looking for a role, a clientele, or a stable balance of interests that would allow him a future independent of British fortunes. He found all three after 1948 when, in conjunction with the creation of Israel, he came to rule the portion of Palestine known as the West Bank.

It is about Martha and her friend Tabitha the cat preparing for a long, cold winter The second story is called Martha B. Rabbit and Daphne the Forgetful Duck The third story is called Martha B. Vietnam: A Tale of Two Tours (B/W Version)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 6.06 $A U.S. Army helicopter pilot's candid first-hand account of his Vietnam experience in the air and on the ground at the height of US troop strength and then again when he returned for a second tour of duty at the very end of the war. It is a non-political description with photos of what life was really like for him and others who served in Vietnam. There is no embellishment or any second-hand stories from anyone else about their experiences in Vietnam. The author describes a first tour in the Central Highlands supporting an Infantry Division as a pilot in an Assault Helicopter Company flying the UH-1H (Huey) and later during his first tour as an OH-6A Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) pilot assigned to an Infantry Brigade. The book includes a description of combat assaults, the Cambodian Invasion, ground an air tactics, people he met and worked with, helicopter operations, rescues, combat in the air and on the ground, leadership, unit life and living at four different locations, everyday camp life and conditions, as well as many vignettes as to things both good and bad he witnessed during his first tour. The author continues his book with a history of his second tour around Saigon while assigned to an Air Cavalry Troop and how much the war and other things had changed from his first tour. Events recounted include the Air Cavalry Troop mission and life at Bien Hoa, the cease fire and post-cease fire support missions, moving to Saigon and experiences living there, meeting his former enemy, the prisoner of war exchange, being shot down after the cease fire began, and being on the final flight out of combat troops that closed out the war for America. He closes with his overall reflections on his wartime service. A must for those who want to know what it was really like to have been there without the hype, politics, or hidden agenda that usually is part of any Vietnam War story.

The Tale of Old Mortality (Edinburgh Edition of the Waverley Novels, Vol. 4B)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.25 $It is 1679. Archbishop Sharpe, Primate of Scotland, has just been murdered. His death is a signal for rebellion in which the Covenanting army, strong in faith and willing to die for it, challenges the King's forces under the command of Claverhouse. Between the two extremes stands young Henry Morton of Milnewood; escaping the threat of execution by Claverhouse, he commits his loyalties to the Covenanters, whose bigotry and fanaticism he nevertheless deplores. The story reaches dramatic heights in Scott's description of the Covenanters rebuff of the Royalist forces at Loudoun Hill, the preparations for the Battle of Bothwell Bridge, and the moving trial of the young Morton and his fellow prisoners before Claverhouse and the Privy Council.Scott's grim tale of extremism and cruelty is redeemed by the courage and the loyalty of its characters and the humorous vignettes of the maid Jenny Dennison, the faithful Cuddie Headrigg, and his stubborn yet resolute mother Mause. In this, one of his best-known novels, Scott dramatically reaffirms his conviction that religious and civil liberty are essential for a civilized society.

Death's Acre: Inside the Legendary Forensic Lab, The Body Farm, Where the Dead Do Tell Tales (includes 16 pages of B&W photos)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 52.76 $Nowhere is there another lab like Dr. Bill Bass's: On a hillside in Tennessee, human bodies decompose in the open air, aided by insects, bacteria, and birds, unhindered by coffins or mausoleums. At the "Body Farm," nature takes its course, with corpses buried in shallow graves, submerged in water, concealed beneath slabs of concrete, locked in trunks of cars. As stand-ins for murder victims, they serve the needs of science - and the cause of justice. For thirty years, Dr. Bass's research has revolutionized the field of forensic science, particularly by pinpointing "time since death" in murder cases. In this riveting book, he investigates real cases and leads readers on an unprecedented journey behind the locked gates of the Body Farm. A master scientist and an engaging storyteller, Bass shares his most intriguing work: his revisit of the Lindbergh kidnapping and murder, fifty years after the fact; the mystery of a headless corpse whose identity astonished the police; the telltale bugs that finally sent a murderous grandfather to death row; and many more.
