Abroad for Her Country: Tales of a Pioneer Woman Ambassador in the U.S. Foreign Service
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.08 $"In Abroad for Her Country, Jean M. Wilkowski shares the story of her extraordinary career in the U.S. Foreign Service during the last half of the twentieth century. Born in an era when few women sought professional careers, Wilkowski graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and the University of Wisconsin and then rose through the ranks at the Department of State, from Vice Consul to the first woman U.S. Ambassador to an African country and the first woman acting U.S. Ambassador in Latin America. During her thirty-five-year diplomatic career, Wilkowski was sent first as a vice consul to the Caribbean during World War II, when the Department of State was "even taking in 4-Fs and women." She moved on to more challenging assignments in Latin America and Europe. For much of her career, she specialized in protecting and promoting U.S. trade and investment interests in such posts as Paris, Milan, Rome, Santiago, and Geneva. She also served during a revolution in Bogotá, attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa, and the war between El Salvador and Honduras, when she called in U.S. humanitarian aid for 50,000 war-displaced persons. In 1977 she became coordinator of the U.S. preparation for the 1979 United Nations Conference on Science and Technology in Vienna. She worked closely with Notre Dame president Theodore Hesburgh, head of the U.S. delegation, and accompanied the delegation on its fact-finding visit to the Peoples' Republic of China.

Abroad: A Novel
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.17 $Not since Donna Tartt's The Secret History has a novel this intoxicating captured the headiness and dark temptations of university life. The old Etruscan city of Grifonia swarms with year-abroad students―thousands of them from all over. Ostensibly, they've come to study. But really they are here to reinvent themselves, to shuck their identities and buck constraints far from the watchful eyes of parents and others who know them too well. There's a reason Henry James's young ladies went to Europe with chaperones. Today's young ladies don't. In Abroad, the bestselling novelist Katie Crouch―whose Girls in Trucks brilliantly portrayed the cruelties of postcollege New York life on a Southern girl trying to make her way―tears a story from international headlines and transforms it into a page-turning parable of modern girlhood, full of longing and reckless behavior. As the heroine (and the reader) of Abroad will soon discover, Grifonia is a city filled with dangerous secrets of many kinds: ancient, eternal, infernal. "Prepare to have your heart broken while laughing out loud at this breathtaking, scathingly sardonic novel," wrote People magazine's reviewer about Crouch's Men and Dogs. "From her opening line. . . Crouch grabs you and never lets go." In Abroad, Crouch's mesmerizing talents are again on full display.

Witches Abroad [Paperback] Pratchett, Terry
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.34 $Be careful what you wish for... Once upon a time there was a fairy godmother named Desiderata who had a good heart, a wise head, and poor planning skills-which unfortunately left the Princess Emberella in the care of her other (not quite so good and wise) godmother when DEATH came for Desiderata. So now it's up to Magrat Garlick, Granny Weatherwax, and Nanny Ogg to hop on broomsticks and make for far-distant Genua to ensure the servant girl doesn't marry the Prince. But the road to Genua is bumpy, and along the way the trio of witches encounters the occasional vampire, werewolf, and falling house (well this is a fairy tale, after all). The trouble really begins once these reluctant foster-godmothers arrive in Genua and must outwit their power-hungry counterpart who'll stop at nothing to achieve a proper "happy ending"-even if it means destroying a kingdom.

Ida from Abroad: The Timeless Writings of Ida B. Wells from England in 1894
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 63.16 $After the office of the Memphis Free Speech newspaper was destroyed and a price put on her head, Ida B. Wells became an exile from Memphis, Tennessee in 1892. She went to New York City where she wrote and started speaking to large groups of people about the brutal realities of lynching. She subsequently spent several weeks in the United Kingdom during 1893 speaking about these realities. In 1894, Ida B. Wells returned to England where she continued to speak about the lawlessness in the United States. Her column, "Ida B. Wells Abroad," for the The Daily Inter Ocean newspaper and some personal correspondence provide a vivid picture of the challenges, triumphs, alliances and obstacles that Ida B. Wells encountered in her efforts to elicit support from the British to impact change in the United States. Michelle Duster, great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells, compares her life experiences to those of her great-grandmother to highlight the challenges and progress of African American women born a century apart. Troy Duster, Ph.D., grandson of Ida B. Wells, adds historical background to the reason why global pressure was solicited in order to address the wide-spread oppression and terrorism faced by African Americans at the turn of the 20th century. Ida B. Wells (1862 - 1931) was born a slave in Holly Springs, Mississippi, but through a series of circumstances ended up traveling across the country as well as to Europe to expose the injustices against African Americans that were raging through the South. She was a journalist, teacher, anti-lynching crusader, women's rights activist, civil rights pioneer and one of the founders of the NAACP at the turn of the 20th century.

Innocents Abroad An Overland Trip Through a World That No Longer Exists
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.39 $In 1969, the writer and her husband set off for what is intended to be a short holiday in Ibiza and end up taking the so-called hippie route to Katmandu in Nepal. It is the true account, written first as a journal and then daily, by a woman who takes this journey without preparation, planning or travel agent and before the instant communication of mobiles, tablets and email. In this fresh and engrossing account of a journey taken nearly 50 years ago from Europe to Asia, Carol Carlton vividly describes a world which has changed dramatically in the decades since; as she travels, an inner journey emerges as the landscape, people and the journey itself have their effect upon the writer. This book is a must-read for readers who are interested in travel and also for those who see life as an adventure, not only through what we do, but how we view the world, who we are and who we become. What emerges from this wonderfully described travel account is an approach to the unknown in the widest sense through life's journey. While their wanderings lead them into many kinds of hardships and dangers, it seems as if their spirit of open-heartedness itself keeps them safe from the unexpected risks that present themselves. At the same time, it reveals how this spirit of innocent curiosity allows people from many countries, religions and ways of life to reveal their innermost convictions and feelings to her. Nowhere is this more poignant than in Syria.

Russia Abroad: A Cultural History of the Russian Emigration, 1919-1939
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 92.49 $The dramatic events of the twentieth century have often led to the mass migration of intellectuals, professionals, writers, and artists. One of the first of these migrations occurred in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, when more than a million Russians were forced into exile. With this book, Marc Raeff, one of the world's leading historians of Russia, offers the first comprehensive cultural history of the "Great Russian Emigration." He examines the social and institutional structure of the emigration and describes its rich cultural and intellectual life. He points out that what distinguishes this emigration from other such episodes in European history is the extent to which the emigres succeeded in reconstituting and preserving their cultural creativity in the West. The flourishing Russian communities of Paris, Berlin, Prague and Kharbin not only enriched Russian arts and letters, but also significantly influenced the culture of their Western hosts, and Raeff concludes with an assessment of their impact on the development of modern Western and Soviet culture.
