Affine Lie Algebras and Quantum Groups: An Introduction, with Applications in Conformal Field Theory (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 99.83 $This is an introduction to the theory of affine Lie algebras and to the theory of quantum groups. It is unique in discussing these two subjects in a unified manner, which is made possible by discussing their respective applications in conformal field theory. The description of affine algebras covers the classification problem, the connection with loop algebras, and representation theory including modular properties. The necessary background from the theory of semisimple Lie algebras is also provided. The discussion of quantum groups concentrates on deformed enveloping algebras and their representation theory, but other aspects such as R-matrices and matrix quantum groups are also dealt with.

Affine Lie Algebras Weight Multiplicities and Branching Rules Volume 2
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.00 $This practical treatise is an introduction to the mathematics and physics of affine Kac-Moody algebras. It is the result of an unusual interdisciplinary effort by two physicists and two mathematicians to make this field understandable to a broad readership and to illuminate the connections among seemingly disparate domains of mathematics and physics that are tantalizingly suggested by the ubiquity of Lie theory. The book will be useful to Lie algebraists, high energy physicists, statistical mechanics, and number theorists. Volume One contains a description of Kac-Moody Lie algebras, and especially the affine algebras and their representations; the results of extensive computations follow in Volume Two, which is spiral bound for easy reference.

Affine and Projective Geometry
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 44.35 $An important new perspective on AFFINE AND PROJECTIVEGEOMETRY This innovative book treats math majors and math education studentsto a fresh look at affine and projective geometry from algebraic, synthetic, and lattice theoretic points of view. Affine and Projective Geometry comes complete with ninetyillustrations, and numerous examples and exercises, coveringmaterial for two semesters of upper-level undergraduatemathematics. The first part of the book deals with the correlationbetween synthetic geometry and linear algebra. In the second part, geometry is used to introduce lattice theory, and the bookculminates with the fundamental theorem of projectivegeometry. While emphasizing affine geometry and its basis in Euclideanconcepts, the book: * Builds an appreciation of the geometric nature of linear algebra * Expands students' understanding of abstract algebra with itsnontraditional, geometry-driven approach * Demonstrates how one branch of mathematics can be used to provetheorems in another * Provides opportunities for further investigation of mathematicsby various means, including historical references at the ends ofchapters Throughout, the text explores geometry's correlation to algebra inways that are meant to foster inquiry and develop mathematicalinsights whether or not one has a background in algebra. Theinsight offered is particularly important for prospective secondaryteachers who must major in the subject they teach to fulfill thelicensing requirements of many states. Affine and ProjectiveGeometry's broad scope and its communicative tone make it an idealchoice for all students and professionals who would like to furthertheir understanding of things mathematical.

Access to Origins : Affines, Ancestors, and Aristocrats
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.99 $In many non-industrial, non-Western societies, power and prestige are closely linked to the extent of an individual's or group's perceived connection to the supernatural realm, which also explains and validates tangible activities such as economic success, victories in war, or control over lucrative trade. Affines (in-laws), ancestors, and aristocrats, in particular, are connected to the realm of creative cosmological origins (i.e., to Genesis), which accords them distinctive, supernatural powers and gives them a natural and legitimate right to worldly authority. This is the hypothesis that Mary W. Helms pursues in this broadly cross-cultural study of aristocracy in chiefly societies. She begins with basic ideas about the dead, ancestors, affines, and concepts of cosmological origins. This leads her to a discussion of cosmologically defined hierarchies, the qualities that characterize aristocracy, and the political and ideological roles of aristocrats as wife-givers and wife-takers (that is, as in-laws). She concludes by considering various models that explain how societies may develop or define aristocracies.

Methods of Algebraic Geometry in Control Theory - Scalar Linear Systems and Affine Algebraic Geometry
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 93.42 $Control theory represents an attempt to codify, in mathematical terms, the principles and techniques used in the analysis and design of control systems. Algebraic geometry may, in an elementary way, be viewed as the study of the structure and properties of the solutions of systems of algebraic equations. The aim of these notes is to provide access to the methods of algebraic geometry for engineers and applied scientists through the motivated context of control theory. I began the development of these notes over fifteen years ago with a series of lectures given to the Control Group at the Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden. Over the following years, I presented the material in courses at Brown several times and must express my appreciation for the feedback (sic!) received from the students. I have attempted throughout to strive for clarity, often making use of constructive methods and giving several proofs of a particular result. Since algebraic geometry draws on so many branches of mathematics and can be dauntingly abstract, it is not easy to convey its beauty and utility to those interested in applications. I hope at least to have stirred the reader to seek a deeper understanding of this beauty and utility in control theory. The first volume dea1s with the simplest control systems (i. e. single input, single output linear time-invariant systems) and with the simplest algebraic geometry (i. e. affine algebraic geometry).

Geometric Transformations III (New Mathematical Library)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 160.31 $This book is the sequel to Geometric Transfrmations I and II, volumes 8 and 21 in this series, but can be studied independently. It is devoted to the treatment of affine and projective transformations of the plane; these transformations include the congruences and similarities investigated in the previous volumes. The simple text and the many problems are designed mainly to show how the priniciples of affine and projective geometry may be used to furnish relatively simple solutions of large classes of problems in elementary geometry, including some straight edge construction problems. In the Supplement, the reader is introduced to hyperbolic geometry. The latter part of the book consists of detailed solutions of the problems posed throughout the text.

Bond Pricing and Yield Curve Modeling : A Structural Approach
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 97.47 $In this book, well-known expert Riccardo Rebonato provides the theoretical foundations (no-arbitrage, convexity, expectations, risk premia) needed for the affine modeling of the government bond markets. He presents and critically discusses the wealth of empirical findings that have appeared in the literature of the last decade, and introduces the 'structural' models that are used by central banks, institutional investors, sovereign wealth funds, academics, and advanced practitioners to model the yield curve, to answer policy questions, to estimate the magnitude of the risk premium, to gauge market expectations, and to assess investment opportunities. Rebonato weaves precise theory with up-to-date empirical evidence to build, with the minimum mathematical sophistication required for the task, a critical understanding of what drives the government bond market.

Tensor Methods in Statistics (Chapman & Hall/CRC Monographs on Statistics & Applied Probability)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 117.62 $This book provides a systematic development of tensor methods in statistics, beginning with the study of multivariate moments and cumulants. The effect on moment arrays and on cumulant arrays of making linear or affine transformations of the variables is studied. Because of their importance in statistical theory, invariant functions of the cumulants are studied in some detail. This is followed by an examination of the effect of making a polynomial transformation of the original variables. The fundamental operation of summing over complementary set partitions is introduced at this stage. This operation shapes the notation and pervades much of the remainder of the book. The necessary lattice-theory is discussed and suitable tables of complementary set partitions are provided. Subsequent chapters deal with asymptotic approximations based on Edgeworth expansion and saddlepoint expansion. The saddlepoint expansion is introduced via the Legendre transformation of the cumulant generating function, also known as the conjugate function of the cumulant generating function. A recurring them is that, with suitably chosen notation, multivariate calculations are often simpler and more transparent than the corresponding univariate calculations. The final two chapters deal with likelihood ratio statistics, maximum likelihood estimation and the effect on inferences of conditioning on ancillary or approximately ancillary statistics. The Bartlett adjustment factor is derived in the general case and simplified for certain types of generalized linear models. Finally, Barndorff-Nielsen's formula for the conditional distribution of the maximum liklelihood estimator is derived and discussed. More than 200 Exercises are provided to illustrate the uses of tensor methodology.
