Atheism and Agnosticism (Elements in the Philosophy of Religion)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.75 $This Element is an elementary introduction to atheism and agnosticism. After a brief discussion of the theoretical framework within which atheism and agnosticism are properly evaluated, it then turns to the sketching of cases for atheism and agnosticism. In both cases, the aim is not conviction, but rather advancement of understanding: the point of the cases is to make it intelligible why some take themselves to have compelling reason to adopt atheism or agnosticism.

Twerski on Spirituality
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 60.89 $This is a time when "spirituality" is in, especially if it is of the do-it-yourself variety. Undoubtedly it is a backlash against the prevailing onslaught of hedonism and agnosticism. But spiritualism unguided by core values is hardly better than the alternative. In this book, Rabbi Dr. Twerski looks at dozens of topics in everyday life and peels away the veneer to find the potential for spiritual enrichment. He shows how to pour meaning into even seemingly mundane activities. To the person rooted in a rich system of values, there is no real vacuum in life; all the empty spaces can be filled with meaning. Twerski doesn't preach. He teaches by story, example, and experience. He is a writer who makes us smile as we think, who makes us wonder why we didn't think of that. Best of all, he makes us get up with chin up and shoulders straight, saying, "Adversity, I am stronger, smarter -- and more spiritual -- than you!" Dr. Twerski's earlier works, Living Each Day, Living Each Week, Growing Each Day,Smiling Each Day, I Am I, Self Improvement? -- I'm Jewish!, Mesillas Yesharim -- Lights Along the Way, Positive Parenting, Not Just Stories, Getting Up When You're Down and Dearer Than Life have established his position as a Torah scholar who possesses psychological insights that enhance application of Torah principles to everyday life.

The Art of Bloomsbury
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 124.99 $This is a hardcover book published with a dust jacket. The word Bloomsbury most often summons the novels of Virginia Woolf and E. M. Forster or images of artists and intellectuals debating the hot parlor topics of 1910s and 1920s London: literary aesthetics, agnosticism, defining truth and goodness, and the ideas of Bertrand Russell, A. N. Whitehead, and G. E. Moore. But the Bloomsbury Group also played a prominent role in the development of modernist painting in Britain. The work of artists Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Roger Fry, and their colleagues was often audacious and experimental, and proved to be one of the key influences on twentieth-century British art and design. This catalogue, published to accompany a major international exhibition of the Bloomsbury painters originating at the Tate Gallery in London and traveling to the Yale Center for British Art and the Huntington Art Gallery, provides a new look at the visual side of a movement that is more generally known for its literary production. It traces the artists' development over several decades and assesses their contribution to modernism. Catalogue entries on two hundred works, all illustrated in color, bring out the chief characteristics of Bloomsbury painting--domestic, contemplative, sensuous, and essentially pacific. These are seen in landscapes, portraits, and still lifes set in London, Sussex, and the South of France, as well as in the abstract painting and applied art that placed these artists at the forefront of the avant-garde before the First World War. Portraits of family and friends--from Virginia Woolf and Maynard Keynes to Aldous Huxley and Edith Sitwell--highlight the cultural and social setting of the group. Essays by leading scholars provide further insights into the works and the changing critical reaction to them, exploring friendships and relationships both within and outside of Bloomsbury, as well as the movement's wider social, economic, and political background.

The End of Unbelief: A New Approach to the Question of God
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.54 $The trend toward agnosticism, atheism, and other forms of unbelief is gathering force, especially among the young. And churches simply don't know how to counter it. This book provides the new kind of outreach needed--sophisticated, bold, and intellectually challenging. As a former atheist turned Christian, Shane Hayes offers a unique perspective for skeptics. While standard conversion literature rarely penetrates unbelievers' defenses, this book brings them to God even as their minds are slammed shut to Christ.Hayes found the direct transition from atheism to Christianity to be impossible. Instead, a period of Pure Theism occurred where Hayes took one step out of atheism towards the second step: Christ. Both steps require an acceptance of God as a personal and loving deity. The End of Unbelief serves as the response to the New Atheists and to anti-faith arguments in general. Read it and give it to the skeptic in your life.

Agnostic: A Spirited Manifesto
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.46 $“Vital” –The New York Times Book Review“Provocative...[Hazleton] paddles the river of doubt with energy and exuberance.” –The Seattle TimesA widely admired writer on religion celebrates agnosticism as the most vibrant, engaging—and ultimately the most honest—stance toward the mysteries of existence. One in four Americans reject any affiliation with organized religion, and nearly half of those under thirty describe themselves as “spiritual but not religious.” But as the airwaves resound with the haranguing of preachers and pundits, who speaks for the millions who find no joy in whittling the wonder of existence to a simple yes/no choice? Lesley Hazleton does. In this provocative, brilliant book, she gives voice to the case for agnosticism, breaks it free of its stereotypes as watered-down atheism or amorphous “seeking,” and celebrates it as a reasoned, revealing, and sustaining stance toward life. Stepping over the lines imposed by rigid conviction, she draws on philosophy, theology, psychology, science, and more to explore, with curiosity and passion, the vital role of mystery in a deceptively information-rich world; to ask what we mean by the search for meaning; to invoke the humbling yet elating perspective of infinity; to challenge received ideas about death; and to reconsider what “the soul” might be. Inspired and inspiring, Agnostic recasts the question of belief not as a problem to be solved but as an invitation to an ongoing, open-ended adventure of the mind.

Versions of Deconversion: Autobiography and the Loss of Faith (Studies in Religion and Culture)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 92.45 $In Versions of Deconversion John Barbour examines the work of a broad selection of authors in order to discover the reasons for their loss of faith and to analyze the ways in which they have interpreted loss. For some the experience of deconversion led to atheism or agnosticism, and others used deconversion as a metaphor or analogy to interpret an experience of personal transformation.Versions of Deconversion should appeal at once to scholars in the fields of religious studies and theology who are concerned with narrative texts, to literary critics and specialists on autobiography, and to a wider audience interested in the ethical and religious significance of autobiography.

Errors of Atheism
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 52.84 $The Errors of Atheism is a response to the glaring gap that exists in analytical philosophy on the concept of God. While there is the large body of work that either defends or challenges orthodox Christian theistic arguments, there is a lack of analytical philosophical work articulating agnosticism as a critique of both theism and atheism. J. Angelo Corlett shows that the conceptual depths of theism must be explored beyond orthodoxy in order to re-open the debate on the problem of God. His book is an agnostic's statement on thecurrent state of the debate about God's existence and where the discussion must go to make genuine philosophical progress instead of remaining in a dialectical stalemate.

The New Inquisition
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 109.12 $This book speaks of a New Inquisition, a New Idol and a New Agnosticism. By the New Inquisition I mean to designate certain habits of repression and intimidation that are becoming increasingly commonplace in the scientific community today. By New Idol I mean to designate the rigid beliefs that form the ideological superstructure of the New Inquisition. By the New Agnosticism I mean to designate an attitude of mind which has elsewhere been called "model agnosticism" and which applies the agnostic principle not just to the "God" concept but to ideas of all sorts in all areas of thoughts and ideology. The agnostic principle refuses total belief or total denial and regards models as tools to be used only and always where appropriate and replaced (by other models) only and always where not appropriate. It does not regard any models, or any class of models, as more "profound" than any other models, or any class of models but asks only how a model serves, or fails to serve, those who use it. The agnostic principle is intended here in a broad "humanistic" or "existential" sense, and is not intended to be narrowly technical or philosophical only. This book is deliberately polemical because I believe models, as tools, should be tested in that kind of combat which Nietzsche metaphorically called "war" and Marx called dialectical struggle. It is deliberately shocking because I do not want its ideas to seem any less stark or startling than they are.
