The Aif in Battle: How the Australian Imperial Force Fought, 1914-1918 (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 37.23 $By the end of the First World War the combat formations of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in both France and the Middle East were considered among the British Empire's most effective troops. While sometimes a source of pride and not a little boasting, how the force came to be so was not due to any inherent national prowess or trait. Instead it was the culmination of years of training, organisational change, battlefield experimentation and hard-won experience;a process that included not just the Australians, but the wider British imperial armies as well. This book brings together some of Australia's foremost military historians to outline how the military neophytes that left Australia's shores in 1914 became the battle winning troops of 1918. It will trace the evolution of several of the key arms of the AIF, including the infantry, the light horse, the artillery, and the flying corps, and also consider how the various arms worked together alongside other troops of the British Empire to achieve a remarkably high level of battlefield effectiveness.

The Boy Colonel: Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Marks, the Youngest Battalion Commander in the AIF
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 61.73 $Known as The Boy Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Marks, was the youngest battalion commander in the AIF and highly regarded not only as a future military commander, but as a business and community leader. It was a blustery day on the 25th January 1920 at Palm Beach to the north of Sydney and the surf was wild. Two attempts had already been made to save a young woman caught in an undertow and dragged out when a young man; skinny, gangly and frail and known to be a poor swimmer, threw off his coat and shoes and raced into the surf. As his fianc e and young nephew watched, the sea closed over him and he disappeared. His body was never recovered. This was the sad and tragic fate of a gallant, highly decorated and promising young man named Douglas Gray Marks. And it was a great loss to a nation whose manhood had been decimated and where the pain of the war remained evident and raw. Douglas Marks was born in 1895 and educated at Fort Street High School. He had, like so many enthusiastic and patriotic young men, basic military training when he turned up at the drill hall in Rozelle two days after the declaration of war. Before embarking in November 1914, he had received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the AIF. After a period of training in Egypt, he embarked for the Gallipoli peninsula and landed on the second day. Spending a great deal of time in the dangerous frontline trenches at Quinn's Post where he was wounded, he remained on Gallipoli until the evacuation in December of that year. Just twenty years old, he was seen as an inspirational young officer, promoted to captain and given acting command of his battalion. Marks then travelled back to Egypt, saw the re-organisation of his beloved 13th battalion and the raising of its sister battalion, the 45th. Sailing from Alexandria, he crossed the Mediterranean to Marseilles and took the train to the north of France and the nursery areas around Armentieres and Bois Grenier.

The Name's Still Charlie: Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Green, DSO
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.72 $Charles Green trained in 41 Militia Battalion in the 1930s and then joined the newly-formed AIF in 1939 the day recruiting started. Appointed as an officer to 2/2 Infantry Battalion 6 Division he was sent to the Middle East. After the early campaigns along the African north coast, the division was sent to Greece where Green was involved in the fighting withdrawal against the Germans. He was near to capture as the forces were evacuated but escaped to safety, via Turkey. On the AIFs return to the Pacific War he was eventually appointed CO of 2/11 Infantry Battalion and led them in the North New Guinea campaigns. After a spell as a post-war civilian, he rejoined the army and as Lieutenant-Colonel Green took 3RAR to the Korean War in 1950. It was after leading the battalion successfully in a difficult battle in North Korea that a stray shell mortally wounded him. This is the story of a typical Australian who demonstrated great leadership in two wars.

Adelaide to Alamein Based on the war diary of an Australian infantry officer
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.37 $In June 1940, following the Nazi invasion of France, Ivor Paech, an ordinary primary school teacher from South Australia, enlisted in the Second AIF - the all-volunteer fighting component of the Australian Army in World War II. The unit he was assigned to would become Australia's most highly decorated infantry battalion of the conflict - the 2/48th Infantry Battalion. Ivor served in the front lines in North Africa during the Siege of Tobruk, both battles of Alamein, and bore witness to some of the most violent fighting undertaken by Australian soldiers during the war. This is Ivor's story, compiled by his grandson who is a former Army officer, based on the diary he kept during the conflict, background research and interviews with surviving members of the unit.
