This biography examines the ideas and political career of perhaps the most significant and influential American Marxist in the period 1890-1914. The text examines how De Leon, as leader of the Socialist Labour Party, and editor of its journal, the "Daily People", played a key role in the development of the early American Marxist socialist movement. The author describes a complex and committed Marxist thinker who refused to compromise his belief that capitalism had to be abolished. He traces De Leon's career from joining the SLP in 1890, through his relationship with the American Federation of Labour. He also explores De Leon's influence on other thinkers such as Lenin, and assesses his role in the failure of socialism to take root in the USA.

The Rexist movement was founded in the early 1930s by Leon Degrelle as a movement of "renovation" and "conquest", and it was gradually transformed into a political party which won 11% of the vote in the general election of 1936. After the German blitzkreig which overwhelmed Belgium in May 1940, Degrelle and the Rexists declared open support for the Nazis, founding a volunteer army which fought on the Eastern front, and eventually receiving the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves for his efforts in supporting the Nazis. After the fall of the Reich, Degrelle fled to Spain where he continues to live today. Conway has based this account of a little-known part of the history of World War II on a comprehensive examination of the Belgian and German records, as well as personal interviews with Degrelle himself and other surviving Rexists.

Almost 80 years after Leon Trotsky founded the Fourth International, there are now Trotskyist organizations in 57 countries, including most of Western Europe and Latin America. Yet no Trotskyist group has ever led a revolution or built an enduring mass, political party. Contemporary Trotskyism looks in detail at the influence, resilience and weaknesses of the British Trotskyist movement, from the 1970s to the present day. The book argues that to understand and explain the development, resilience and influence of Trotskyist groups, we need to analyse them as bodies that comprise elements of three types of organization: the political party, the sect and the social movement. It is the properties of these three facets of organization and the interplay between them that gives rise to the most characteristic features of the Trotskyist movement: frenetic activity, rampant divisions, inter-organizational hostility, authoritarian and charismatic leadership, high membership turnover and ideological rigidity.
