Amnesties, Pardons and Transitional Justice : Spain's Pact of Forgetting
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 65.02 $In a consolidated democracy, amnesties and pardons do not sit well with equality and a separation of powers; however, these measures have proved useful in extreme circumstances, such as transitions from dictatorships to democracies, as has occurred in Greece, Portugal and Spain. Focusing on Spain, this book analyses the country's transition, from the antecedents from 1936 up to the present, within a comparative European context. The amnesties granted in Greece, Portugal and Spain saw the release of political prisoners, but in Spain amnesty was also granted to those responsible for the grave violations of human rights which had been committed for 40 years. The first two decades of the democracy saw copious normative measures that sought to equate the rights of all those who had benefitted from the amnesty and who had suffered or had been damaged by the civil war. But, beyond the material benefits that accompanied it, this amnesty led to a sort of wilful amnesia which forbade questioning the legacy of Francoism. In this respect, Spain offers a useful lesson insofar as support for a blanket amnesty – rather than the use of other solutions within a transitional justice framework, such as purges, mechanisms to bring the dictatorship to trial for crimes against humanity, or truth commissions – can be traced to a relative weakness of democracy, and a society characterised by the fear of a return to political violence. This lesson, moreover, is framed here against the background of the evolution of amnesties throughout the twentieth century, and in the context of international law. Crucially, then, this analysis of what is now a global reference point for comparative studies of amnesties, provides new insights into the complex relationship between democracy and the varying mechanisms of transitional justice.

The Amnesty of Grace
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 66.68 $A review of this 208-page book reads: "In this excellent volume Elsa Tamez offers a sharp rereading and reappropriation of the Pauline teaching of justification by faith from a Latin American perspective, from the perspective of the poor and marginalized of the continent. The result is not only a highly innovative and challenging interpretation of this teaching - with justice and solidarity at its very core - but also an excellent example of theological dialogue with the Scriptures - thoroughly immersed in the sociopolitcal realities of both the Roman Empire and present-day Latin America."

Diplomacy of Conscience: Amnesty International and Changing Human Rights Norms
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.67 $A small group founded Amnesty International in 1961 to translate human rights principles into action. Diplomacy of Conscience provides a rich account of how the organization pioneered a combination of popular pressure and expert knowledge to advance global human rights. To an extent unmatched by predecessors and copied by successors, Amnesty International has employed worldwide publicity campaigns based on fact-finding and moral pressure to urge governments to improve human rights practices. Less well known is Amnesty International's significant impact on international law. It has helped forge the international community's repertoire of official responses to the most severe human rights violations, supplementing moral concern with expertise and conceptual vision. Diplomacy of Conscience traces Amnesty International's efforts to strengthen both popular human rights awareness and international law against torture, disappearances, and political killings. Drawing on primary interviews and archival research, Ann Marie Clark posits that Amnesty International's strenuously cultivated objectivity gave the group political independence and allowed it to be critical of all governments violating human rights. Its capacity to investigate abuses and interpret them according to international standards helped it foster consistency and coherence in new human rights law. Generalizing from this study, Clark builds a theory of the autonomous role of nongovernmental actors in the emergence of international norms pitting moral imperatives against state sovereignty. Her work is of substantial historical and theoretical relevance to those interested in how norms take shape in international society, as well as anyone studying the increasing visibility of nongovernmental organizations on the international scene.

On Human Rights (Oxford Amnesty Lectures)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.92 $Are there any human rights that apply to all women and all men in all cultures at all times? Can we ground human rights in an abstract rationality possessed by every human being? Or, as some philosophers have claimed, are attempts to ground human rights doomed to failure? Do human rights in any case need such grounding? On Human Rights, the second book in the Oxford Amnesty Lecture Series, presents the opinions of seven distinguished contributors who approach the problem of universal human rights from a variety of perspectives using a wealth of contemporary and historical material. The essays make a significant contribution to the theory and practice of human rights . They grapple with the hard questions that confront anyone concerned with responding appropriately to the numerous violations of human rights that surround us.

Freedom And Interpretation (The Oxford Amnesty Lctures 1992)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 52.94 $Much of modern thought - philosophical, linguistic, literary and psychoanalytic - denies the possibility of a unified and whole self. What do such theories imply about how we interpret our freedom? If the self really is as fragmented and fragile as such theories suggest, how can we defend human rights in the world? Here, seven literary figures battle over this crucial topic, exploring the relationship between political freedom and modern conceptions of the individual as they address questions of identity, nationalism, politics, ethics, poetic language and freedom. Contributors include Terry Eagleton, Frank Kermode and Julia Kristeva.

The Genetic Revolution and Human Rights: The Oxford Amnesty Lectures 1998
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 61.11 $The world was stunned by the announcement that scientists had successfully cloned a sheep. Suddenly, questions that had seemed merely academic or better suited to science fiction became topics for public debate. Should we clone people? Is eugenics morally defensible? Should cloning be regulated, and if so, by whom? How should genetic information about particular individuals be protected? What will be the long-term impact on cultural and racial diversity? Based on the popular Oxford Amnesty Lectures, this fascinating and thought-provoking book collects work from leaders in the field, including Hilary Putnam, Ian Wilmut (co-creator of Dolly the sheep), and Jonathan Glover. It provides an up-to-date and realistic look at many of these challenging and contentious issues. Each chapter includes an introduction to the issue by a prominent lawyer, scientist, or philosopher, and the volume features a foreword by Richard Dawkins. The Genetic Revolution and Human Rights is an invaluable guide to the potential impact of this revolutionary technology on our future.

The Values Of Science: Oxford Amnesty Lectures 1997 (Oxford Amnesty Lectures Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 125.00 $In this collection, introduced by Jonathan Rée, six eminent scientists and thinkers explore and explain how we can bridge the gap between the values of science and human values.Richard Dawkins, in a powerful critique of cultural relativism, restates the scientists' belief that there is something almost sacred about nature's universal truths.Environmental campaigner George Monbiot points out that however successful it may be as an objective description of nature's ways, biotechnology is also a force in commerce and politics.Nicholas Humphrey denies the assumption that questions of morality are distinct from those of science. For him, science is itself a moral good and therefore a fundamental human right.John D. Barrow describes how scientific interest has recently shifted from simple and universal laws of nature of the kind formulated by Newton, to the study of complexity and chaos.Daniel C. Dennett, like Dawkins, gives a sturdy defense of the faith in truth” which he takes to be the distinctive creed of the scientist. He presents this faith as a distillation of a universal human ability to tell the difference between appearance and reality. In the wide-ranging philosophical survey which concludes the volume, Mary Midgley argues against precisely this idea of omnicompetent science.” It is one of three unfortunate myths” of the European Enlightenment, she argues, alongside the myth of social contract and the myth of progress.

Self-Evident Truths? (The Oxford Amnesty Lectures)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.28 $The keywords of the Enlightenment-freedom, tolerance, rights, equality-are today heard everywhere, and they are used to endorse a wide range of positions, some of which are in perfect contradiction. While Orwell's 1984 claims that there is one phrase in the English language that resists translation into Newspeak, namely the opening lines of that key Enlightenment text, the Declaration of Independence: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. . .', we also find the Wall Street Journal saying of the Iraq War that the US was 'fighting for the very notion of the Enlightenment'. It seems we are no longer sure whether these truths are self-evident nor quite what they might mean today. Based on the critically acclaimed Oxford Amnesty Lectures series, this book brings together a number of major international figures to debate the history of freedom, tolerance, equality, and to explore the complex legacy of the Enlightenment for human rights. The lectures are published here with responses from other leading figures in the field.
