Anecdotes & Antidotes: 25 Years At Kam Wah Chung
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.07 $As the gold rush of the late 1800's came to a close in the Eastern Oregon boom towns in the John Day Country, "Doc" Ing Hay's Kam Wah Chung Company became the focus of the rapidly shrinking Chinese population. In the stone building that still stands, Doc Hay practiced Chinese herbal medicine administering healing to the Chinese and white communities alike until his death in 1952. At that time the building was sealed up and not opened again until 1977 when it became a museum. A lifetime collection of herbal medicines and other artifacts, some dating back to well before the turn of the 19th century, are on display. In 1980, Carolyn Micnhimer became the curator of the museum and served her community there for the next twenty-five years. She preserved the building and its contents in the order in which they had been rediscovered and did extensive research on their origins. Additionally, she kept notes of anecdotes that visitors to the museum imparted. Many of these dealt specifically with experiences people had with the Chinese and particularly with "Doc" Hay. It is those notes that became this book. An invaluable contribution to a unique part of Oregon's oral history, through her efforts has been preserved.

Anecdotes Illustrative of a Select Passage in Each Chapter of the Old Testament
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.56 $Excerpt from Anecdotes Illustrative of a Select Passage in Each Chapter of the Old TestamentDuring the Arian controversy, at a general meeting of the ministers of London, at Salters' Hall, Mr Thomas Bradbury had been contending, that those who really be lieved the doctrine of Christ's Divinity should openly avow it; when, to bring it to the test, he said, 'you who are not ashamed to own the Deity of our Lord, follow me into the gallery.' He had scarcely mounted two or three steps before the opposite party hissed him; when, turn ing round, he said, 'i have been pleading for Him who bruised the serpent's head; no wonder the seed of the serpent should hiss.'About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Anecdotes and Examples for the Catechism
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 55.00 $Today, examples are more necessary than ever, because most people are incapable of thinking on the level of ideas and principles. Fr. Spirago, like Our Lord, teaches by parables. The author weaves over 650 short but brilliant examples and anecdotes throughout 36 chapters drawn from the four traditional areas of catechesis: Creed, Sacraments, Commandments and Prayer. Indispensable for parents of young children. This one example should suffice: "Q. Who Made the World? A. God Made the World. "The Astronomer and The Globe: The world did not come into existence spontaneously. The celebrated astronomer Athanasius Kirchner had a friend who did not believe in the existence of God, and frequently asserted that the orbs of heaven were self-existent. One day, when this friend visited the astronomer, he noticed in one corner of the room a globe which displayed the hand of a skillful workman. "Who made that globe?" he inquired. "No one made it,?" Kirchner answered, "it is self-made." And when his friend seemed angry at this answer being given him, he added: "If the immense orbs of heaven are self-existent, why not this insignificant little globe?" The unbeliever looked thoughtful, and presently acknowledged that he now saw that his principles were false." 596 pp. Foil-stamped hardcover, index.

Anecdotes and Examples: Illustrating the Catholic Catechism (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.49 $Excerpt from Anecdotes and Examples: Illustrating the Catholic CatechismIn presenting in the vernacular a work by Francis Spirago, one feels that no apology whatever is needed. This is all the more apparent in view of the hearty reception accorded his two catechetical volumes lately given to the English-speaking world by Rev. Fr. Clarke, S.J., and Bishop Messmer respectively. As to the present product of his pen, its scope and plan cannot be better set forth than in the words of the author's own preface."The great value of examples and illustrations in teaching children and the uneducated is universally acknowledged. The Romans used to say : Verba movent, exempta trahent (Words influence, examples attract). And Seneca said : Longum iter per praecepta, breve et efficax per exempta (The desired end is attained much more quickly and effectually by means of example than by precept). The reason of this is that examples stimulate the imitative instinct, which is strong in most people, especially in the young; consequently they are a powerful factor in education.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Anecdotes of Enlightenment : Human Nature from Locke to Wordsworth
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 70.61 $Anecdotes of Enlightenment is the first literary history of the anecdote in English. In this wide-ranging account, James Robert Wood explores the animating effects anecdotes had on intellectual and literary cultures over the long eighteenth century. Drawing on extensive archival research and emphasizing the anecdote as a way of thinking, he shows that an intimate relationship developed between the anecdote and the Enlightenment concept of human nature. Anecdotes drew attention to odd phenomena on the peripheries of human life and human history. Enlightenment writers developed new and often contentious ideas of human nature through their efforts to explain these anomalies. They challenged each other’s ideas by reinterpreting each other’s anecdotes and by telling new anecdotes in turn. Anecdotes of Enlightenment features careful readings of the philosophy of John Locke and David Hume; the periodical essays of Joseph Addison, Richard Steele, and Eliza Haywood; the travel narratives of Joseph Banks, James Cook, and James Boswell; the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth; and Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy. Written in an engaging style and spotlighting the eccentric aspects of Enlightenment thought, this fascinating book will appeal to historians, philosophers, and literary critics interested in the intellectual culture of the long eighteenth century.

Opera Anecdotes
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.84 $From backstage squabbles and box-office chicanery to the gallantry and glory of creation, this book unveils a delightful panorama of opera lore, alternately hilarious, poignant, and wise. Ethan Mordden has mined the literature for "the best stories" and retells them in the fresh and witty style that prompted Publishers Weekly to hail him as "one of the most entertaining and provocative writers around." Here are anecdotes both classic and arcane: Giuseppe Verdi's discourse on How to Write an Opera, Enrico Caruso's adventures in the San Francisco earthquake, Arturo Toscanini's reunion dinner with his former lover Geraldine Farrar, and Beverly Sills' ad libbing from the Met balcony during a Lily Pons Lakme. There are sad stories, as when Hans von Bulow confronts his wife Cosima after she has left him for Wagner. And there are nutty stories, as when Colonel Henry Mapleson attempts to stage Il Trovatore while missing one of the four principals, Azucena. We see history being made, when Gluck's "psychological" orchestration of Iphigenie en Tauride so startles the Paris Opera orchestra that the players trail off in astonishment. And we see history nearly unmade, when Luciano Pavarotti's plane crashes en route to Milan. "There is history here," Mordden notes, "for if many of the tales are silly, many others are telling. They bring us close to a moment in which art is invented, revised, elaborated. The characters of opera's adventures are so vital and stimulating that almost anything they do enlightens us."About the Author:Ethan Mordden's many books include The American theatre, The Splendid Art of Opera, A Guide to Orchestral Music, Opera in the Twentieth Century, Movie Star, Broadway Babies, and Demented: the World of the Opera Diva. Most recently he brought out his first collection of short fiction, I've a Feeling We're Not in Kansas Anymore: Tales from Manhattan.
