The Room of the Animals is one of the most eclectic sites of the Vatican Museums, a "stone zoo" where art meets science and nature, as expressed in many forms, from the most realistic naturalism to the most imaginative mythology. This volume, available in Italian only, is the result of meticulous archival researches and in-depth analysis and classification, and represents the exhaustive catalogue of the Room, presenting a scientific cataloguing of the sculptures. The first part provides a wide overview of the events that led to the establishment of the Room, from the construction of the Pius-Clementine Museum to the history of the formation of the collection: transfers and acquisitions, the influence of Pius VI, the epoch of collecting or "Cabinet of curiosities", commissions, the genius of Francesco Antonio Franzoni - the greatest restorer, sculptor, inventor of those years -, the Napoleonic era and then of the Restoration, the reorganization of the countless fragments and restorations, up to the vast collection currently consisting of 180 statues. The photographic apparatus follows, together with the charts of all the "animals", with the basic technical information and data regarding the origin, the acquisition and restoration of each single sculpture, reporting quotes from precious archive documents that testify its history.

Lo studio si propone di ridurre uno spazio inopinatamente lasciato semivuoto dalla critica indagando il tema cruciale del filoanimalismo di Umberto Saba, ossia la peculiare considerazione accordata dal poeta triestino alle creature non umane. Ai componenti del domestico «bestiario» sabiano, non gravati da ipoteche antropomorfiche tradizionalmente declinate, viene riconosciuto paritario diritto di cittadinanza con l'«animale uomo» proprio in ragione del loro specifico statuto ontologico, in quanto cioè detentori di un'ancestrale autenticità, illesa dalla storia, che li rende intermediari privilegiati per attingere la verità profonda della «calda / vita». Alla presenza delle bestie nel Canzoniere e nelle altre opere sabiane è dunque sottesa la fondazione di un postumanesimo aderente alla comune madre natura: recuperata la sua origine biologica, lo scrittore opera una radicale metabole prospettica, scoprendosi partecipe della medesima essenza e del medesimo destino dei «sereni animali / che avvicinano a Dio».
