Joyce Carol Oates: Artist in Residence [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.00 $An English professor at Indiana University, Bender strives to paint a holistic portrait of Oates as artist, scholar, teacher and critic. Her extensive discussion of Oates's novels (presented in chronological order) traces the development of themes and motifs, explores Oates's penchant for parody, genre and "revisionism" and identifies philosophical, psychological and literary influences, among them, Nietzsche, Jung, Dostoevski, Laing, Lewis Carroll and Nabakov. There is a minimal amount of annoying academic jargon ("metafictionist," "intertextual"), but one particularly obnoxious section of the book is cluttered with run-on puns like "Dostoevski himself may well have influenced this vision of crime and punishment, these notes from the underground." Yet Bender brings great enthusiasm to her subject and provides a rewarding look at a great modern writer. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Art and Innovation: The Xerox PARC Artist-in-Residence Program (Leonardo Books)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.74 $Exploring a radical combination of research, art and new media. The idea behind Xerox's interdisciplinary Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) is simple: if you put creative people in a hothouse setting, innovation will naturally emerge. PARC's Artist-in-Residence Program (PAIR) brings artists who use new media to PARC and pairs them with researchers who often use the same media, though in different contexts. This is radically different from most corporate support of the arts, where there is little intersection between the disciplines. The result is both interesting art and new scientific innovations. Art and Innovation explores the unique process that grew from this pairing of new media artists and scientists working at the frontier of developing technologies. In addition to discussing specific works created during several long-term residencies, the artists and researchers reveal the similarities and differences in their approaches and perspectives as they engage each other in a search for new methods for communication and creativity.ContributorsMarshall Bern, David Biegelsen, Michael Black, Jeanette Blomberg, John Seely Brown, Margaret Crane, Paul De Marinis, Jeanne C. Finley, Rich Gold, Craig Harris, Steve Harrison, David Levy, Constance Lewallen, Dale MacDonald, Judy Malloy, Cathy Marshall, Scott Minneman, John Muse, Susan Newman, Joel Slayton, Lucy Suchman, Randy Trigg, Stephen Wilson, Jon Winet, Pamela Z

In the Temple of the Self: The Artist's Residence as a Total Work of Art
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.00 $As treasure troves of creativity, the homes of artists reflect the intellectual worlds of their creators. Starting with the Villa Stuck in Munich--the aesthetic, conceptual cosmos and life’s work of the aristocratic artist Franz von Stuck--this unique volume integrates the artist’s house as a category into the international discourse and is the first to assign these buildings the status of major works. About 20 examples bring to life the fascination that these artistic fantasies hold for art lovers, including both existing projects and some which, although they have been lost, were of unique importance in their day and still retain their charisma. Along with paintings, sculptures and photographs, plans and models convey the interrelationship between art and life as well as the harmony of the arts expressed by Richard Wagner’s historical concept of the total work of art. Among the houses featured are Sir John Soane’s Museum, London; William Morris’s Red House, Bexleyheath; Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Tiffany House, New York City; Mortimer Menpes’ flat, London; the Fernand Khnopff Villa, Brussels; Jacques Majorelle’s villa and garden, Marrakesh; Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbau, Hanover; and Max Ernst’s house, Arizona.

Lawn Road Flats : Spies, Writers and Artists
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.93 $The Isokon building, Lawn Road Flats, in Belsize Park on Hampstead's lower slopes, is a remarkable building. The first modernist building in Britain to use reinforced concrete in domestic architecture, its construction demanded new building techniques. But the building was as remarkable for those who took up residence there as for the application of revolutionary building techniques. There were 32 Flats in all, and they became a haunt of some of the most prominent Soviet agents working against Britain in the 1930s and 40s, among them Arnold Deutsch, the controller of the group of Cambridge spies who came to be known as the "Magnificent Five" after the Western movie The Magnificent Seven; the photographer Edith Tudor-Hart; and Melita Norwood, the longest-serving Soviet spy in British espionage history. However, it wasn't only spies who were attracted to the Lawn Road Flats, the Bauhaus exiles Walter Gropius, László Moholy-Nagy and Marcel Breuer; the pre-historian V. Gordon Childe; and the poet (and Bletchley Park intelligence officer) Charles Brasch all made their way there. A number of British artists, sculptors and writers were also drawn to the Flats, among them the sculptor and painter Henry Moore; the novelist Nicholas Monsarrat; and the crime writer Agatha Christie, who wrote her only spy novel N or M? in the Flats. The Isokon building boasted its own restaurant and dining club, where many of the Flats' most famous residents rubbed shoulders with some of the most dangerous communist spies ever to operate in Britain. Agatha Christie often said that she invented her characters from what she observed going on around her. With the Kuczynskis - probably the most successful family of spies in the history of espionage - in residence, she would have had plenty of material. DAVID BURKE is a historian of intelligence and international relations and author of The Spy Who Came In From the Co-op: Melita Norwood and the Ending of Cold War Espionage (The Boydell Press, 2009).

El Museo destinará todas las ganancias derivadas de la venta de productos "El Met" a la adquisición de arte latinx. Artist Statement "El Met" is how we say "The Met" in Spanglish. It's how Latinx audiences throughout New York City and beyond colloquially describe the Museum as a destination. As a Civic Practice Partnership Artist in Residence, one of the first things I explored was the history of representation among Puerto Rican and Latinx artists at the Museum, asking the fundamental question: Where do we see ourselves at The Met? The groundbreaking exhibition The Art Heritage of Puerto Rico: Pre-Columbian to Present (1973), a collaboration with El Museo del Barrio, became a focal point in my research, as it remains the largest survey of Puerto Rican art in any U. S. museum to date. Unfortunately, it didn't lead to major acquisitions, future exhibition opportunities, or sustainable relationships with Latinx communities in the generations that followed. In response to the underrepresentation of Puerto Rican and Latinx artists in the collection, I remixed The Met's logo into "El Met" as a way of reimagining the Museum through the lens of Spanish-speaking audiences. I then created a limited edition of "El Met" t-shirts as a provocation to increase the visibility of Latinx art at the Museum. This collection is now exclusively available at The Met, and all proceeds from the sale of "El
