Only in France is demography essentially the population science: it is taught at school, newspapers feature the evolution of fertility rates in their headlines and the subject sparks ideological debates in the media. Bailey Stone uses recent scholarship on the diplomatic, political, social, economic, and cultural history of eighteenth-century revolutionary France to examine the outbreak of the French Revolution and the dramatic developments of the subsequent decade.
