Les Caesares, appeles encore Liber de Caesaribus, nous sont parvenus comme la troisieme et derniere partie d'une histoire romaine allant des origines mythiques jusqu'au IVeme siecle apres J.-C. Le Livre des Cesars retrace l'histoire de l'empire depuis Auguste jusqu'a la date meme de composition du livre sous Constance II en 360. L'auteur, Aurelius Victor, d'origine modeste et provinciale, fit une carriere administrative et devint gouverneur de Pannonie. Proche de l'empereur Julien, il composa, avant de devenir gouverneur, les Caesares, breviaire regroupant les biographies des empereurs. Si l'auteur se veut le successeur de Tite-Live, son livre cependant n'est pas sans evoquer Suetone, pour la forme d'abord, mais aussi pour le gout de l'anecdote et du detail piquant.Notre edition presente minutieusement le texte et son auteur, avant d'analyser le genre du breviaire, ou epitome, pour en degager les origines ainsi que les caracteristiques. De nombreux paralleles avec les grands historiens romains, Tacite et Tite-Live bien sur, mais aussi Suetone, sont proposes au lecteur, de meme qu'une etude des techniques biographiques et historiographiques. L'histoire du texte et de ses editions est relatee en detail. Des notes accompagnent la lecture et sont developpees, en fin d'ouvrage, par des notes complementaires. L'edition est encore enrichie par un Index Nominum.
