Simone Nieweg’s latest book is a compilation of nearly every variety of agricultural cultivation, rang ing from small market gardens with vegetable beds and fruit trees to pastures, fallow land, forest fringes, arable land, and fields of grain. Without exception, Nieweg photographs her subjects in a soft, almost shadowless light that does not obscure the fine structure of her images. Her long exposure times require an absolutely breezeless day in order to capture images of plants and landscapes in hitherto unseen clarity and richness of detail. Nieweg’s photographs tell of the unconventional marriage, which nature and civilization have entered upon inthe course of their long evolution, and everything in them gives the impression of being known and familiar through many encounters. The present work is a selection of photographs taken by Simone Nieweg over the last ten years. The introduction was written by Heinz Liesbrock.

With brief essays by both Martinez and Mac Adam (Sacrifice and Resurrection) and a short chronology of this Spanish-born artist. A lovely presentation in any case, and, obivously, scarce!

These paintings from Allan Kaprow never had been seenAllan Kaprow (1927–2006) is internationally renowned mainly as an action artist. Not only did he coin the term Happening—he gave distinction to this art form in New York in the late 1950s. Also his environments—huge, changeable installations, made from material such as car tires, drums and ice blocks – are regarded as milestones in recent art history. Allan Kaprow did, however, began his artistic career as a painter, not least in connection with his studies under Hans Hofmann; in addition, he studied art history under Meyer Shapiro and composition with John Cage. He was, therefore, not only open to theory at an early stage, but also to various artistic and interpretative approaches. He always moved be­tween the tension-filled areas of intuition, open form and time reference on the one hand, and the reflexive practice as a theoretician and art historian on the other. The exhibition at Villa Merkel in Esslingen was, for the first time, exclusively dedicated to his early paintings from the time between 1946 and 1957, and reveals the role models the young artist chose to follow and work on, and, in particular, his interest in questions on space as well as his endeavor to somehow contextualize the achievements of Jackson Pollock and John Cage. This extends to the works created during the mid-1950s, which he called »action collages« and in which he ­gradually incorporated everyday materials and objects. »I don’t set rules«An automatic lawnmower rings a bell, a balloon leaves a trace in the sand, a boat moves on barrels. Everything is on the move with Roman Signer (* 1938 in Appenzell)—randomly, one might assume, as insinuated by his statement? Not at all; the artist rather perceives sculpture as a processual description of a condition, and thus expands the usual three dimensions of objects by a fourth: time. Hence his works are also described as “time sculptures”. He often uses explosives, water or movement as a resource, so as to be able to direct the experience of his artworks toward the experience of physical violence and speed. Such a method of working naturally generates a lot of interest from the audience, because it is quite reminiscent of those exciting and crackling archaic forces that seem to inhabit this anarcho-lab. But above all we love that violent roar and crack. Roman Signer's work has actually been exhibited internationally for quite a while, for instance at the 1987 documenta, the sculpture projects in Münster in 1997, and in Hannover in 2000 at the Expo, as well as most recently in 2010 at Herrenhausen Gardens. The exhibition at Kestnergesellschaft thus shows a very well-known artist with his latest works that, in this volume accompanying a remarkable exhibition, delight us once again with the poetic quality of things and the grotesque aspects of everyday life.Exhibition Kestnergesellschaft Hanover, 23/8–4/11/2018
