Gaston Bachelard, Revised and Updated: Philosopher of Science and Imagination
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 57.37 $Comprehensive overview of the entire spectrum of works by one of twentieth-century France’s most original thinkers.Gaston Bachelard, one of twentieth-century France’s most original thinkers, is known by English-language readers primarily as the author of The Poetics of Space and several other books on the imagination, but he made significant contributions to the philosophy and history of science. In this book, Roch C. Smith provides a comprehensive introduction to Bachelard’s work, demonstrating how his writings on the literary imagination can be better understood in the context of his exploration of how knowledge works in science. After an overview of Bachelard’s writings on the scientific mind as it was transformed by relativity, quantum physics, and modern chemistry, Smith examines Bachelard’s works on the imagination in light of particular intellectual values Bachelard derived from science. His trajectory from science to a specifically literary imagination is traced by recognizing his concern with what science teaches about how we know, and his increasing preoccupation with questions of being when dealing with poetic imagery. Smith also explores the material and dynamic imagination associated with the four elements―fire, water, air, and earth―and the phenomenology of creative imagination in Bachelard’s Poetics of Space, his Poetics of Reverie, and in the fragments of Poetics of Fire.

Bachelard: Science and Objectivity (Modern European Philosophy)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.11 $This is the first critically evaluative study of Gaston Bachelard's philosophy of science to be written in English. Bachelard's professional reputation was based on his philosophy of science, though that aspect of his thought has tended to be neglected by his English-speaking readers. Dr Tiles concentrates here on Bachelard's critique of scientific knowledge. Bachelard emphasised discontinuities in the history of science; in particular he stressed the ways of thinking about and investigating the world to be found in modern science. This, as the author shows, is paralleled by those debates among English-speaking philosophers about the rationality of science and the 'incommensurability' of different theories. To these problems Bachelard might be taken as offering an original solution: rather than see discontinuities as a threat to the objectivity of science, see them as products of the rational advancement of scientific knowledge. Dr Tiles sets out Bachelard's views and critically assesses them, reflecting also on the wider question of how one might assess potentially incommensurable positions in the philosophy of science as well as in science itself.

The Dialect of Duration
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.00 $Gaston Bachelard (1884 -1962) is one of the most famous philosophers of the French 20th century, leaving a huge body of writing stretching from his first publication in 1928 right up to the time of his death. His subject matter was diverse - to date, the texts chosen for translation into English have reflected his 'literary critical' writing career, but there remains an impressive body of untranslated work on the philosophy of science. He held the chair of History of Philosophy of Science at La Sorbonne. Bachelard's work has and retains a profound influence in the French-speaking world. His writing career as a whole can be understood as a meditation on science in the context of human being and the creative, 'poetic' side of human nature, featuring restless reformulations of psychoanalysis and phenomenology . Dialectic of Duration addresses the nature of time, taking issue specifically with Henri Bergson's notion of duration, or 'lived' time, as found in Bergson's Duration and Simultaneity and Matter and Memory. For Bachelard, contra Bergson, the experience of lived time was fractured, interrupted, not 'single' and continuous; he argues that there is no one underlying thread - that time is multiple and discrete. This had and has crucial significance for the debate between Bergson and the physics of Relativity. This first time English translation has been undertaken by Bachelard scholar Dr Mary McAllester Jones of Strathclyde University, whose Gaston Bachelard - Subversive Humanist has done much to broaden Bachelard's English-language reputation. The introduction is by Dr Cristina Chimisso.
