Bangladesh : Politics, Economy and Civil Society
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 42.68 $Relatively little is known or understood about Bangladesh by outsiders. Since its hard-won independence from Pakistan in 1971, it has been ravaged by economic and environmental disasters. Only recently has the country begun to emerge as a fragile, but functioning, parliamentary democracy, relatively self-sufficient in food production and with an economy that has been consistently achieving growth. The story of Bangladesh, told through the pages of this concise and readable book, is a truly remarkable one. By delving into its past, and through an analysis of the economic, political and social changes that have taken place over the last twenty years, the book explains how Bangladesh is becoming of increasing interest to the international community as a portal into some of the key issues of our age: the way globalization affects the world's poorer countries, the long-term effects of the international development industry, the potential risks to people and environment from climate change and the political challenges facing modern Muslim-majority nations. In this way the book offers an important corrective to the view of Bangladesh as a failed state and also sheds light on the lives of a new generation of its citizens.

Bangladesh, Untold Facts
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 124.11 $The year 1971 is etched in the collective consciousness of Bangladeshis, Pakistanis and Indians though to a lesser degree as a time of tragedy and upheaval. For Bangladeshis 1971 was the year of blood and tears, for Pakistanis deep humiliation, and for the Indians of triumph. Lt Col Sharif ul haq Dalim has unraveled some of the rare facts about military operations in then East Pakistan and Liberation War for Bangladesh in his book Bangladesh: Untold Facts. There is a lot of literature on 1971 but, understandably enough, very little of it comes from Pakistan. The liberation literature in Bangladesh rests upon the perception of victimhood to the point of denying resistance from Bengali armed fighters at places. The literature from India mostly accounts of military officers focuses on the 1971 war without taking account of the role of India in East Bengal from March 1971 onwards. It, too, misses out both on the perspectives of the Bengalis as well as the West Pakistanis. This book is the best account of 1971, so far. The book is also eminently readable. For all these qualities the book is recommended strongly to scholars of South Asia and the interested layperson alike, which will remain required reading for times to come.

Bangladesh Reader : History, Culture, Politics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.13 $Bangladesh is the world's eighth most populous country. It has more inhabitants than either Russia or Japan, and its national language, Bengali, ranks sixth in the world in terms of native speakers. Founded in 1971, Bangladesh is a relatively young nation, but the Bengal Delta region has been a major part of international life for more than 2,000 years, whether as an important location for trade or through its influence on Buddhist, Hindu, and Muslim life. Yet the country rarely figures in global affairs or media, except in stories about floods, poverty, or political turmoil. The Bangladesh Reader does what those portrayals do not: It illuminates the rich historical, cultural, and political permutations that have created contemporary Bangladesh, and it conveys a sense of the aspirations and daily lives of Bangladeshis. Intended for travelers, students, and scholars, the Reader encompasses first-person accounts, short stories, historical documents, speeches, treaties, essays, poems, songs, photographs, cartoons, paintings, posters, advertisements, maps, and a recipe. Classic selections familiar to many Bangladeshis—and essential reading for those who want to know the country—are juxtaposed with less-known pieces. The selections are translated from a dozen languages; many have not been available in English until now. Featuring eighty-three images, including seventeen in color, The Bangladesh Reader is an unprecedented, comprehensive introduction to the South Asian country's turbulent past and dynamic present.

Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: International Relations and Regional Tensions in South Asia (International Political Economy Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 10.89 $This book provides a broad, analytical study of Bangladesh's relationship with India and Pakistan between 1975 and 1990. Bangladesh's role in South Asian international relations has tended to be overlooked and underestimated. The book reveals the complexity of the relationship between Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan and challenges the biased and stereotypical views often encountered regarding Bangladesh's foreign policy. Considerable contemporary evidence is interpreted from a variety of perspectives: domestic, regional, and extra-regional. The evidence is then used to assess the relative significance of these perspectives.

In Love with Bangladesh The Heart of a Missionary
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.32 $I tall people I have one aunty. Name jill she raised me when I little boy. She loves me so much. I am not forget her. Everytime I remember her love and care David Das from Home of Joy "Jill's story has reconfirmed a long-held personal belief-that missionaries aren't 'normal' They are ordinary people who have allowed God to set their heart on fire with a passion for the lost and needy. They are willing to endure personal pain and hardship for the sake of their mission, and even if they return from the mission field, a part of their heart will never return with them. Jill's openness in sharing all the ups and downs of her missionary journey will make this book a valuable resource for anyone who feels called to cross-cultural ministry, and it will also be a source of inspiration to all of us who long to reach our world with the love of Jesus Christ" -Pastor Monte LeLaCheur, Turning Point Open Bible Church This journey with Christ is certainly an adventure. God gave me a love for His people in Bangladesh, not unlike the love he has for us-relentless. The Lord led me in and out of Bangladesh, each time under dramatic circumstances. Over a period of years, I was blessed to be a part of starting three medical clinics, while living at two different orphanages, taking care of hundreds of children who called me Auntie or Amma. God gave His love to them through my willing heart. I had prayed that God would "break my heart with the things that break the heart of God" That prayer was answered in ways that were never expected.

The Economy of Bangladesh
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 120.77 $The traditional social and political conflicts that Bangladesh has failed to resolve over the past two decades are described by specialists on that country's economy. Some of the issues discussed are nationalization versus privatization, relationships between political and military institutions, institutionalizing and stabilizing democracy, and formulation of appropriate manpower policy. The contributors suggest policy measures to resolve the conflicts, and in doing so reveal the silver linings of the economy of Bangladesh.
