Sweet Synchronicity: Finding Annie Besant, Discovering Krishnamurti
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.58 $Like the film, ‘Julie/Julia’ this book is a true story based on the lives of two women who lived at different times and places but who had uniquely intertwined lives. Elizabeth Spring, astrologer and aspiring writer, finds Annie Besant because of unusual similarities in their astrology charts. Annie is a woman who's been lost in history--a woman who was a passionate social reformer and who was declared 'an unfit mother' and lost custody of her children because of distributing information on birth control in 1875. After trials and depression, Annie becomes a passionate spiritual seeker; being mentored by the Russian psychic Madame Blavatsky, head of the Theosophical Society. As Elizabeth struggles to write a screenplay of Annie’s life she discovers the heartfelt and obsessive story of Annie’s adopted son, the young mystic J. Krishnamurti, and the occultist, Charles Leadbeater. Elizabeth questions the role of fate and reincarnation in her own life by what she uncovers about her mysterious relationship with Annie who was born exactly 100 years earlier, in Victorian England in 1847.

Annie Besant: A Biography
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 121.96 $In her long life, Annie Besant embraced political, religious, and social causes with equal conviction and sincerity, courting ridicule and controversy by actively promoting unpopular ideas. At 26 she fled the shelter of marriage to an Anglican clergyman and renounced her religious upbringing by joining the National Secular Society. Under the influence of its president, Charles Bradlaugh, she wrote and lectured for the cause of Freethought, and in 1876, achieved nationwide fame by defending birth control in a public court. She converted to socialism and through her friendship with Bernard Shaw joined the Fabian Society. In 1888 Besant played a leading role in the Bryant and May match girls' strike and became Secretary of the trade union they founded. But by 1891 she had fallen out of sympathy with socialists and turned instead to Theosophy and its eccentric prophet, Madame Blavatsky. Thereafter she divided her life between England and the Theosophical Society's headquarters in India. She joined the Indian National Congress and was interned in 1917 for her passionate advocacy of Home Rule. In this, the first full-length biography of Annie Besant in thirty years, Taylor draws on previously unpublished letters to show that Besant was in love, not with Shaw, but with journalist W. Stead who rejected her advances. The book reveals for the first time the full extent of the Government of India's alarm at Besant's commanding position in the crisis of 1917, and her bid for political and religious power in India.

Invisible Worlds: Annie Besant on Psychic and Spiritual Development
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.59 $"To investigate the unexplained laws of Nature and the powers latent in humanity" is one object of the Theosophical Society. Annie Besant (1847-1933), outspoken feminist, political activist, and early president of the TS, thought that psychic and spiritual development should be available to everyone, not just a chosen few. In her many books and articles providing guidelines, her goal was not to help students develop supernormal powers, but to help them increase consciousness in order to receive instruction from the ascended Masters. Besant believed this work had positively changed her life and wanted others to enjoy the same benefit. Although penned a century ago, Besant's wisdom on the subject is still germane. Her prose is clear and inspiring, and Kurt Leland's introduction and notes are well-informed. He helpfully divides Besant's writings into four parts -- Occultism Light and Dark, Higher Life Training, the Investigation of Different Worlds, and the Science of the Superphysical.

Striking a Light: The Bryant and May Matchwomen and their Place in History
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 46.87 $In July 1888, fourteen hundred women and girls employed by the matchmakers Bryant and May walked out of their East End factory and into the history books. Louise Raw gives us a challenging new interpretation of events proving that the women themselves, not celebrity socialists like Annie Besant, began it. She provides unequivocal evidence to show that the matchwomen greatly influenced the Dock Strike of 1889, which until now was thought to be the key event of new unionism, and repositions them as the mothers of the modern labour movement. Returning to the stories of the women themselves, and by interviewing their relatives today, Raw is able to construct a new history which challenges existing accounts of the strike itself and radically alters the accepted history of the labour movement in Britain.

Bhagavadgita in the Mahabharata : A Bilingual Edition
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.82 $No other Sanskrit work approaches the Bhagavadgita in the influence it has exerted in the West. Philosophers such as Emerson and the other New England Transcendentalists were deeply affected by its insights, a dozen or more scholars, including Annie Besant and Mahatma Gandhi, have attempted its translation, and thousands of individuals struggling with the problems divided loyalties have found comfort and wisdom in its pages. The Bhagavadgita ("Song of the Lord") tells of the young and virtuous Prince Arjuna who is driven to lead his forces into battle against an opposing army composed of close relatives and others whom he loves. The Lord Krsna, appearing in the poem as Arjuna's friend and charioteer, persuades him that he must do battle, and we see Arjuna changing from revulsion at the thought of killing members of his family to resignation and awareness of duty, to manly acceptance of his role as warrior and defender of his kingdom. The Bhagavadgita is a self-contained episode in the Mahabharata, a vast collection of epics, legends, romances, theology, and metaphysical doctrine that reflects the history and culture of the whole of Hindu civilization. The present edition forms a part of J. A. B. van Buitenen's widely acclaimed translation of this great work. Here English and Sanskrit are printed on facing pages, enabling those with some knowledge of Sanskrit to appreciate van Buitenen's accurate rendering of the intimate, familial tone and directness of the original poem.
