Boldt Castle: In Search of the Lost Story
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.98 $Each summer a quarter-million people visit Boldt Castle and learn its tragic love story. Louise Boldt, forty-one years old and mother of two, died just as her husband was attaining great wealth and fame. In January of 1904 a telegram from George Boldt stopped work on their dream house. Despite millions of dollars spent, he abandoned the project forever. Contrary to this official version, generations of local folk have told "true stories" about what really happened. This largest book to study the Boldts and their fantastic building project presents startling revelations that alter all versions of the tragedy. The author's "Search of the Lost Story" is recalled as a series of conversations about the Boldts and their projects. The informal dialogue presents decades of research and reports interviews with family and others who have shared information, experiences, and personal impressions.

Hotel Mavens : Lucius M. Boomer, George C. Boldt and Oscar of the Waldorf
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.85 $The word "maven" is defined by Wikipedia as a "trusted expert in a particular field, who seeks to pass knowledge on to others." Since the 1980s it has become more common when the New York Times columnist William Safire adapted it to describe himself as "the language maven." The word from Hebrew is mainly confined to American English and was included in the Oxford English Dictionary second edition (1989). My three hotel mavens are: 1) Lucius M. Boomer, one of the most famous hoteliers of his time, was chairman of the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria Corporation. In a career of over half a century, he directed such celebrated hotels as the Bellevue-Stratford in Philadelphia, the Taft in New Haven, the Lenox in Boston, and the McAlpin, Claridge, Sherry-Netherland and the original as well as the current Waldorf-Astoria in New York. 2) George C. Boldt who was the genius of the original Waldorf-Astoria. It was said of him that he made innkeeping a profession and, more than any man, was responsible for the modern American hotel. 3) Oscar of the Waldorf who was described in 1898 by the New York Sun: "In only one New York hotel, however, is there a personage deserving to be called a maître d'hotel. Anyone who studies him closely will soon arrive at a firm conviction that he might quite as appropriately have been called General or Admiral, if circumstances had not led him into the hotel business. Oscar knows everybody." Oscar was a superstar of his time and one of the stalwarts who managed both the original and the current Waldorf-Astoria. Among his many duties, Oscar commanded a staff of 1,000 persons bedsides conducting a school for waiters, at the time the only one of its kind in the United States. In 1896, Oscar wrote one of the greatest cookbooks of its time: "The Cook Book by 'Oscar of the Waldorf'. It contains 907 pages and 3,455 recipes.

The First Victim (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.62 $Lieutenant Lou Boldt, the Seattle cop who stars in Ridley Pearson's deservedly popular series, is a sharp and touching figure--perhaps the most believable police officer in current fiction. Early in this ninth book about his public and private life, Lou has to put on a bullet-resistant vest to lead a raid against some dangerous criminals. "The vest was not physically heavy, but its presence was," Pearson tells us. It meant battle; it meant risk. For Boldt, a vest was a symbol of youth. It had been well over a year since he had worn one. Ironically, as he approached the hangar's north door at a light run behind his own four heavily armored ERT personnel, he caught himself worrying about his hands, not his life. He didn't want to smash up his piano hands in some close quarters skirmish. . . . Boldt plays jazz piano one night a week in a local bar, and despite his concern for his hands, he takes every opportunity he can to get away from his desk and into the streets. But money pressures, caused by his wife's recent illness, also make him think about the possibility of a better-paying job in the private sector. Meanwhile, some extremely ruthless people are murdering illegal Chinese immigrant women and leaving their bodies buried in newly dug graves. An ambitious local TV journalist named Stevie McNeal and the young Chinese woman she thinks of as her "Little Sister" risk their lives to investigate the killings, while Boldt and his team round up a most unusual array of suspects. This combination of hard-edged realism and softer sentiment has become Pearson's trademark, and once again it works smoothly. --Dick Adler
