Oxford Gothic Grammar
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 173.36 $This volume provides a comprehensive reference grammar of Gothic, the earliest attested language of the Germanic family (apart from runic inscriptions), dating to the fourth century. The bulk of the extant Gothic corpus is a translation of the Bible, of which only a portion remains, and which has been the focus of most previous works. This book is the first in English to also draw on the recently discovered Bologna fragment and Crimean graffiti, original Gothic texts that provide more insights into the language. Following an overview of the history of the Goths and the origin of the Gothic language, Gary Miller explores all the major topics in Gothic grammar, beginning with the alphabet and phonology, and proceeding through subjects such as case functions, prepositions and particles, compounding, derivation, and verbal and sentential syntax. He also presents a selection of Gothic texts with notes and vocabulary, and ends with a chapter on linearization, including an overview of Gothic in its Germanic context. The Oxford Gothic Grammar will be an invaluable reference for all Indo-Europeanists, Germanic scholars, and historical linguists, from advanced undergraduate level upwards.

Grammar of the Gothic Language
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.88 $Although it has no modern descendants, Gothic is a language of considerable importance in the study of the Germanic languages, including English. The surviving texts consist mostly of the New Testament translations commissioned by the fourth-century Bishop Wulfi la (Ulfi las). This classic grammar contains extracts from these texts. Joseph Wright (1855-1930) started work at the age of six as a donkey-boy in the local stone quarry. The next year he went to work in a woolen mill. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Wright tired of relying on his literate workmates for news and taught himself to read. Soon he was attending night school, and he later started his own night school, the money from which supported his study of Mathematics and German at the University of Heidelberg. After further studies at London, Heidelberg and Leipzig, he became a lecturer at Oxford, and eventually Professor of Comparative Philology. Among his many books was the English Dialect Dictionary.

The Gothic Language: Grammar, Genetic Provenance and Typology, Readings (Volume 5)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.55 $This book is designed for students and scholars of the oldest known language, with a sizable data corpus belonging to the English, German, Dutch, and Scandinavian language group. The Gothic Language is seminal to the history of the study of each of these languages. Gothic grammar is a standard text in courses on Indo-European and general linguistics, since Gothic serves as the prototype Germanic language in the study of comparative world language typologies. Particularly pan-Germanic is the innermost core of the grammar, the genetic phonology, which is reconstructed within the more recent approaches of Laryngeal and Glottalic Theories. Most challenging to traditionalist viewpoints is the total novel restructuring of Gothic synchronic phonology via current theoretical approaches such as underspecification theory and optimality theory. Underspecification, utilizing inheritance trees, also infuses the inflectional morphology, which admits a non-configurational syntax with verb-headed clauses. This book also brings the reader into the ambience of the fourth-century Goths. Readings from the Wulfilian bible, the extant eight pages of the Skeireins, together with a glossary, a bibliography and index, complete this volume.

Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar: The Linguistics and Language Composition of Hebrew - its Etymology, Syntax, Tones, Verbs and Conjugation
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.44 $The famous exposition of Hebrew linguistics by Wilhelm Gesenius - who was one of the most lauded Biblical scholars of his era - is reprinted here in the popular translation by Arthur Ernest Cowley. As a Bible tutor and Lutheran scholar, Gesenius depended on a reliable knowledge of Hebrew to effectively teach the Old Testament. A voracious reader and a gifted speaker, Gesenius amassed audiences when giving lectures owing to his ability to make subjects vivid and interesting - it is this aversion to dryness that the author applies with vigor to his explanations of Hebrew grammar and syntax.Chapters are devoted to the sentence structure and grammatic qualities of Hebrew, with the language's peculiarities duly noted. How words are composed is another topic treated with detail, while the Hebraic system of numeracy receives extensive discussion. How the language expresses verbs and adjectives, and how gender is expressed, is revealed with ample demonstration. The edition which is presented here went through several iterations and revisions; the first lexicon and principle studies were finished in 1806, but it would not be until 1812 that a final, enlarged and definitive copy would arrive with the public. This translation to English emerged almost a century later in 1910, and was complimented for its accuracy and faithfulness to Gesenius's original work.

An Introduction to the Gothic Language (Paperback or Softback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.97 $"The present work is designed to provide a carefully graded introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of the Gothic language. The material is presented in a way that I have found very effective in my teaching of other languages over the years, with enough examples and exercise material to lead the student to a rapid and intelligent reading of the extant texts. "In addition to this purely practical goal, I have also tried to clarify, to the extent possible, the aspectual nature of the Gothic verb, a subject somewhat neglected in the textbooks currently available in English. . . . "Because the study of Gothic is usually undertaken by students of Germanic or Indo-European philology, I have included a discussion of the historical phonology and morphology in a supplementary series of lessons whose contents parallel that of the corresponding lessons in the Grammar. . . . "The texts given include all extant portions of the four gospels together with the extant portions of Romans and First Timothy. The Gospel According to Luke has been fully glossed at the foot of each page to spare the student the loss of time in looking up words . . . . The end Glossary contains the complete vocabulary of the Gothic Bible with the exception of proper names and a few transliterated Greek words." --from the Preface

altere Mittelindisch im ?berblick
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.00 $The first edition, which was published in 1986 and which intended to supplement the comprehensive grammars of Prakrit by Richard Pischel (1900) and Pali by Wilhelm Geiger (1916), has been out of print for more than a decade. Consequently, it seems useful and necessary to present a revised text by including the impressive progress of research on Middle Indic achieved during the past fifteen years. Although the overall arrangement of the material has not been changed, the individual paragraphs have been thoroughly checked and were, in many cases, also rewritten. Aim and purpose of this survey continues to be an introduction into the history and development of the grammar of the early Middle Indic languages. For this reason, first of all Pali and Ardhamagadhi, the old languages of Buddhism and Jainism respectively, are taken into consideration. In contrast to the grammars by Pischel and Geiger, Middle Indic inscriptions have also been adduced. Lastly, the rich finds of new material written in Gandhari, the Northwestern Prakrit, have been included as far as the present state of knowledge allows. In addition to a description of the grammar, the survey also offers a brief introduction into the literary and epigraphical source material most important for the study of Middle Indic languages.
