Labor Camp Socialism: The Gulag in the Soviet Totalitarian System
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.24 $This is the first historical survey of the Gulag based on newly accessible archival sources as well as memoirs and other studies published since the beginning of glasnost.Over the course of several decades, the Soviet labor camp system drew into its orbit tens of millions of people -- political prisoners and their families, common criminals, prisoners of war, internal exiles, local officials, and prison camp personnel. This study sheds new light on the operation of the camp system, both internally and as an integral part of a totalitarian regime that "institutionalized violence as a universal means of attaining its goals". In Galina Ivanova's unflinching account -- all the more powerful for its austerity -- the Gulag is the ultimate manifestation of a more pervasive and lasting distortion of the values of legality, labor, and life that burdens Russia to the present day.

Camp
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 114.36 $Dust jacket notes: "What is camp? The word is used to describe people, clothes, life styles, paintings, literature, music, architecture and interior design. It maybe used to express disapproval or irresponsible delight. But ask anyone who uses the word to define it and the answer wilI not stand up to examination. Camp is not kitsch, which is bad art, miscalculated with the best of intentions; camp art can be good art created with the worst of intentions. And it is not the same as gay, although there is a large area of overlap. Camp is an attempt to identify and define the phenomenon and to plot its history and characteristics. Mark Booth unearths the roots of camp in Roman decadence, in Mannerism and in the conspicuous consumption of Versailles in the reign of Louis XIV. He looks at the behaviour of Regency dandies, fin-de-siecle aesthetes, bright young things in the 'twenties, literary cliques in the 'thirties, yesterday's pop art and today's pop music. The gallery of camp personalities runs from Beau Brummell and Disraeli, through Sarah Bernhardt and Robert de Montesquiou-Fezensac (the model for Marcel Proust's Baron de Charlus) to Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger. Celebrating as it analyses, Camp is a unique contribution to cultural and social history. With almost two hundred pictures covering the whole gamut of camp from Carpaccio to David Bowie, it is also a delight to look at."

The Liar
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 101.64 $Adrian Healey loves to lie. He lies all the time. Every minute, every moment. Worse, he does it wonderfully, imaginatively, brilliantly. He lies to buck the System, to express his contempt for convention, but mostly because he just plain likes to. It's fun, and so much more challenging. It is high camp. One creates when one prevaricates. "Doesn't everyone think the way I think?" says Adrian of his various inventions. Like the pornographic novel by Charles Dickens, his career as a Piccadilly "rent-boy" hireable by the hour, his stressful work as a drug "mule" smuggling illegal substances. He has (as his Cambridge tutor observed) "a fine brain, but a dreadful mind." Already in his public school career, marked by privilege and pederasty, he had lost the ability to differentiate between simple truth and his elaborate fictions. The Liar is as wicked and witty, as unspeakably (and unquotably) funny as its protagonist narrator - and as irresistible as its multi-talented author, Stephen Fry. Mr. Fry's credits grow daily. He is the star of a film entitled Peter's Friends, and of Masterpiece Theater's television series Jeeves and Wooster. He is half of the Fry and Laurie comedy team, he has written a play called Latin and the book for the musical Me and My Girl, and he is a weekly columnist for the London Daily Telgraph. He is also now the author of the #1 English bestseller, The Liar, which spent several months at the very top position on the British charts. In the literary firmament it has been identified as somewhere between Oscar Wilde and Saki.

Ashokan Farewell Guitar Arrangement
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.71 $Renowned fiddler and composer Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, his musical partner and wife, have run the Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camp in upstate New York for many years. Jay wrote "Ashokan Farewell" in 1982 at the camp season's end, to express the sense of loss he felt after the departure of the musical community. The melody s sweet, haunting sadness proved to be a perfect match for Ken Burns's 1990 PBS series "The Civil War", which introduced it to millions of viewers. In this guitar arrangement, the bass line enters as an ascending response to the melody, which is then harmonized in sixths and thirds the second time through. The arrangement is a good study in position shifting up and down the fingerboard, and provides a great showcase for dynamic and tonal nuance in the phrasing of the melody. It is an excellent concert selection and will be a popular addition to the repertoire of any fingerstyle player, on either steel- or nylon-string guitar.
