Caravaggio’s brief sojourn in the city near Mount Vesuvius in 1606/07 sparked off a revolution: a new era began for Neapolitan painting. With his merciless portrayal of reality and his dramatic chiaroscuro he provided important stimuli for the development of a distinctive school of painting of European stature.
