Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.35 $Cataract Solutions is the most comprehensive reference for maintaining and restoring the health of the crystalline lens. This book is ideal as a reference guide for health practitioners and serious students of the accelerated self healing methods of Dr. Swartwout. These individually tailored supplement programs are updated to meet each individual's changing needs on a monthly cycle. Most of her fellow trainees fare little better, and within days more than one has succumbed to a mysterious illness whose symptoms closely resemble the ?marsh fever? talked of in ominous tones by the locals of Graveleigh, an isolated village at the water's edge. Graveleigh's nearest neighbour is Growth Industries, a chemical plant with a sinister reputation. Cataract: Some Notes After Having a Cataract Removed
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.35 $Behind my right eye hangs a burlap cloth; behind my left eye there's a mirror. . . Before the burlap the visible remains indifferent; before the mirror it begins to play.”What happens when an art critic loses some of his sight to cataracts? What wonders are glimpsed once vision is restored? In this impressionistic essay written in the spirit of Montaigne, John Berger, whose treatises on seeing have shaped cultural and media studies for four decades, records the effects of cataract removal operations on each of his eyes. The result is an illuminated take on perception. Berger ponders how we can become accustomed to a loss of sense until a dulled world becomes the norm, and describes the sudden richness of reawakened sight with acute attention to sensory detail. This wise little book beckons us to pay close attention to our own senses and wonder at their significance as we follow Berger's journey into a more vivid, differentiated way of seeing. Demirel's witty illustrations complement the text, creating a mini-world where eyes take on whimsical lives of their own. The result is a collaborative collectors' piece perfect for every reader’s bedside table. Cataract from Greek kataraktes, meaning waterfall or portcullis, an obstruction that descends from above.' Notes and reflections by one of our great soothsayers of seeing, John Berger, on the minor miracle of cataract surgery. With drawings by the Turkish artist Selcuk Demirel. 'If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite.” William Blake

The Cataract Surgery Book: Options & Explanations for Patients
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.46 $Most cataract surgery patients are optimistic and for good reason. I have personally performed thousands of cataract surgeries in my career, including members of my own family, and the majoity of those operatations were qualitatively succesful. And because of the success rate of such surgeries, many prospective patients expect perfect vision restored with little or no recovery time. And more often than not, this is the ultimate result. But, as with any surgery, there are potential complications. Cataract surgery has risk and can result in increased dry eye, irritation, pain, dimished focus, unexpected recovery issues, inflammation, and even loss of vision are possible. And that is the reason I am writing this book. To advise and educate propective patients in their decison to undergo cataract surgery and improve their understanding of the overall risks and rewards of such surgery. Over the past fifteen years as an ophthalmologist, I have witnessed firsthand, the life changing results of cataract surgery and experienced with my patients the true joy that accompanies better and more useful vision. In this book I will be sharing not only my expertise based on education, training, and experience, along with objective and empirical evidence, but also my subjective opinions as well. And those opinions may very well differ from the opioinions of other medical experts in my field. And that’s okay. Just as every eye is different, the perspective through which we observe is equally different, unique, and subjective. David Woods MD

Fourth Cataract and Beyond
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 157.00 $The 12th International Conference for Nubian Studies was held at the British Museum, London, from 1st-6th August 2010. The conference, held every four years, is the only international gathering of archaeologists and scholars from associated disciplines which considers all aspects of Sudan and southern Egypt's ancient and more recent past. The main sessions, and main papers published herein, were devoted to a consideration of the Merowe Dam Archaeological Salvage Project, its aftermath and impact. Over de previous decade this has been the major focus of archaeological activity on the Middle Nile. The dam is now complete and the reservoir is filled, drawing a line under the fieldwork component of the project. It was felt timely, therefore, in the interim to obtain an overview of what was found during the many years of intensive work and the first main paper speaker in each session sought to do just that. They were followed by reports on sites, categories of objects and more thematic papers arranged broadly by period. These highlight that, while the focus of archaeological activity still remains in the Nile Valley where there is the densest concentration of sites and also where there remains the most concentrated threat to their survival, much work is being undertaken away from the river and in some cases outside its catchment area. The role of the deserts is increasingly being appreciated while the role of the savannah and areas even further south have yet to be given the prominence that they probably deserve.

Two Trips to Gorilla Land and the Cataracts of the Congo
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 87.77 $Sir Richard Burton (1821-90) is well known for his colourful career, recorded in numerous books and articles, as a diplomat, explorer and ethnographer. In 1861 he was appointed consul to Fernando Po (now Bioko) in Equatorial Guinea, remaining there for four years until he was transferred to Brazil. These volumes collate the expeditions and ethnographic observations made during his time there. In his preface, Burton writes that the 'plain truth' about the African has not been told in Britain, declaring that English occupation of West Africa has proved 'a remarkable failure'. First published in 1876, the second volume recounts a journey made from Fernando Po to Loango Bay and up the Congo River. Of particular interest is the penultimate chapter, 'The slaver and the missionary in the Congo River', in which Burton expresses his ambivalence towards a European presence in Africa. Volume 2 also includes appendices containing geographical observations.

Stop Vision Loss Now! : Prevent and Heal Cataracts, Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, and Other Common Eye Disorders
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.35 $Losing your eyesight is a frightening thought. Yet, every five seconds someone in the world goes blind. Most causes of visual impairment are caused by age-related diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Modern medicine has no cure for these conditions. Treatment usually involves managing the symptoms and attempting to slow the progression of the disease. In some cases surgery is an option, but there is always the danger of adverse side effects that can damage the eyes even further. Most chronic progressive eye disorders are considered incurable, hopeless. However, there is a successful treatment. It doesn’t involve surgery, drugs, or invasive medical procedures. All that is needed is a proper diet. The key to this diet is coconut, specifically coconut oil. The author used this method to cure is own glaucoma, something standard medical therapy is unable to do. The coconut based dietary program described in this book has the potential to help prevent and treat many common visual problems including the following: cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, optic neuritis, irritated eyes, conjunctivitis (pink eye), and eye disorders related to neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS). Most chronic eye disorders come without warning. No one can tell who will develop a visual handicap as they age. Everybody is at risk. Once the disease is present, treatment is a lifelong process. The best solution is prevention. In this book, you will learn the basic underlying causes for the most common degenerative eye disorders and what you can do to prevent, stop, and even reverse them.

Origins of the Korean War, Vol. 2: The Roaring of the Cataract, 1947-1950
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 127.99 $In continuing his argument that the Korean War was civil and revolutionary in character, Bruce Cumings examines the internal political-economic development of the two Korean states and the consequences, for Korea, of Cold War rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. He investigates the intense border fighting and internal political instability that preceded the Northern invasion and challenges the notion of sudden Soviet-sponsored intervention. "A decade ago, Bruce Cumings opened a new chapter in Korean War studies by arguing that this horrible conflict was above all a civil war. The Roaring of the Cataract is on a grander scale and narrated in a freer, more indignant voice than the first volume....there is no better camera obscura for those daring to revisit the bloodbaths that convulsed Korea at mid-century."--Far Eastern Economic Review
