At Random: The Reminiscences of Bennett Cerf
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.39 $“I’ve got the name for our publishing operation. We just said we were going to publish a few books on the side at random. Let’s call it Random House.” So recounts Bennett Cerf in this wonderfully amusing memoir of the making of a great publishing house. An incomparable raconteur, possessed of an irrepressible wit and an abiding love of books and authors, Cerf brilliantly evokes the heady days of Random House’s first decades. Part of the vanguard of young New York publishers who revolutionized the book business in the 1920s and ’30s, Cerf helped usher in publishing’s golden age. Cerf was a true personality, whose other pursuits (columnist, anthologist, author, lecturer, radio host, collector of jokes and anecdotes, perennial judge of the Miss America pageant, and panelist on What’s My Line?) helped shape his reputation as a man of boundless energy and enthusiasm and brought unprecedented attention to his company and to his authors. At once a rare behind-the-scenes account of book publishing and a fascinating portrait of four decades’ worth of legendary authors, from James Joyce and William Faulkner to Ralph Ellison and Eudora Welty, At Random is a feast for bibliophiles and anyone who’s ever wondered what goes on inside a publishing house.

Blackie, The Horse Who Stood Still
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 74.16 $In a pasture in Kansas one early spring mornA horse quite unlike other horses was born. His coat was coal black so they named the horse “Blackie,”And before very long folks found out he was wacky! Meet Blackie, the stubbornly motionless equine hero of Christopher Cerf and Paige Peterson’s delightful and touching biography-in-verse, Blackie, The Horse Who Stood Still. See, most colts are frisky but Blackie was not.Blackie liked standing still! Yes, he liked it a lot!“What’s the hurry?” thought Blackie. “There’s so much to seeStanding here in the shade of a juniper tree..... This (mostly) true tale tells the heart-warming story of a horse who made standing stock-still a lifelong endeavor—while becoming a champion rodeo horse, a tourist favorite at Yosemite Park, a legendary environmental crusader, and the beloved mascot of one of America’s most beautiful towns, Tiburon, California, on the shores of San Francisco Bay. The word quickly spread ‘bout the new horse in townAnd from all ‘round the county young kids headed downTo the pasture where Blackie could always be foundStanding still, like a rock, on the same patch of ground. Magically illustrated by Peterson’s lyrical paintings, Blackie is destined to become a children’s classic in the tradition of Munro Leaf’s Ferdinand the Bull and Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, The playful, clever, rhyming text will charm adults and children alike as it delivers an important message about appreciating and preserving the natural beauty around us. “What a beautiful place!” Blackie thought when they got there,“I simply can’t wait just to stand in one spot thereAnd watch a gull soar, or a tree gently sway,Or the fog rolling in from the hills ‘cross the bay...

In This Wild Water: The Suppressed Poems of Robinson Jeffers
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 88.83 $In 1948, Robinson Jeffers submitted the manuscript for 'The Double Axe and Other Poems' to Random House. During the months that followed, a controversy arose between Saxe Commins (his editor), Bennett Cerf (president of Random House), and the author, concerning the political nature of poetry. The end result was the deletion of 10 poems, the changing of several others, and the unusual situation of the publication of a book with a disclaimer from the publisher. What troubled Commins and Cerf about the manuscript was that it revealed so much of Jeffers' stark philosophy. In order to illustrate his idea that man is basically inhuman, the poet used well-known contemporaries in negative examples. Post-war America simply was not ready to accept Jeffers' belief that its own leaders were self-seeking and really no better than Hitler or Stalin.'In This Wild Water' is the story of 'The Double Axe.' In addition to chronicling the publication of the book, it includes the correspondence between Jeffers and Random House and offers a close look at each of the deleted poems (never before published) as well as the original versions of the altered poems. It also traces the development of Jeffers' philosophy of inhumanism, with a look at his early life and the events and circumstances that contributed to his ideas.

Introduction to Contact Topology
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 108.44 $This text on contact topology is the first comprehensive introduction to the subject, including recent striking applications in geometric and differential topology: Eliashberg's proof of Cerf's theorem via the classification of tight contact structures on the 3-sphere, and the Kronheimer-Mrowka proof of property P for knots via symplectic fillings of contact 3-manifolds. Starting with the basic differential topology of contact manifolds, all aspects of 3-dimensional contact manifolds are treated in this book. One notable feature is a detailed exposition of Eliashberg's classification of overtwisted contact structures. Later chapters also deal with higher-dimensional contact topology where the focus mainly on contact surgery, but other constructions of contact manifolds are described, such as open books or fibre connected sums.

Dear Donald, Dear Bennett Format: Hardcover
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.97 $Donald Klopfer and Bennett Cerf had been partners in Random House for seventeen years, but Donald decided that he had to become a part of an even greater endeavor—the defeat of Nazi Germany. Not long after Pearl Harbor, Donald, who was then forty years old, took a leave from Random House and joined the United States Army Air Forces. He served for two and a half years, finally becoming an intelligence major in a B-24 group in England. Donald and Bennett wrote to each other regularly all during that period. Bennett sent Donald long newsy letters about the book business—authors, sales, publishing gossip—as well as about what was happening in New York. Donald reacted in his wise, serene way to Bennett’s letters, and conveyed news of what was going on in the war, though sometimes censorship took its toll. This is nostalgia with substance, and because these letters were never intended to be read by anyone else, they reveal, in a convincing and wonderful way, just how special these two men were and how that specialness was reflected in the company they founded.

Name Dropping: Tales from My San Francisco Nightclub
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 69.31 $When El Matador opened in 1958, Bennett Cerf called it "the most attractive room in America." Part saloon, part salon, Barnaby Conrad's nightclub was nestled in the heart of San Francisco's cabaret and nightlife district. On any given night, one might find Noel Coward, Marilyn Monroe, Truman Capote, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, or Tyrone Power in the club or might hear Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Eva Gabor, George Shearing, or Andre Previn take over the piano. In Name Dropping, Barnaby Conrad vibrantly evokes this bygone era. Charming, personable, and witty, the author is both celebrity and fan as he shares vivid, hilarious, and surprising anecdotes, delightfully dropping famous names all the while.
