The Efficacy and Safety of Misoprostol in Obstetrics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 44.91 $Misoprostol (Cytotec ®) is a prostaglandin analogue which was developed for the prevention and treatment of gastroduodenal ulcers. Due to its properties of inducing ripening of the cervix and contractions of the pregnant uterus, it has also been found to be a very useful drug for several important indications in obstetrics. Although it is frequently used in many countries of the world, it is still not licensed for these indications and therefore in off-label use. Nevertheless, its use is still being discussed, as there are also repeated reports on serious adverse drug reactions, such as uterine rupture and maternal death, following the use of misoprostol in pregnant women. By pooling and evaluating data from studies investigating the use of misoprostol in its three main obstetrical indications (namely cervical ripening and labour induction, abortion induction, as well as the prevention and treatment of postpartum haemorrhage), published in the last twenty years, an overview of the available information on the efficacy and safety of misoprostol in obstetrics was provided.

Doctors in Denial : The Forgotten Women in the Unfortunate Experiment
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.66 $When Dr Ron Jones joined the staff of National Women's Hospital in Auckland in 1973 as a junior obstetrician and gynecologist, Professor Herbert Green's study into the natural history of carcinoma in-situ of the cervix (CIS) – later called 'the unfortunate experiment' – had been in progress for seven years. By the mid-1960s there was almost universal agreement among gynecologists and pathologists worldwide that CIS was a precursor of cancer, requiring complete removal. Green, however, believed otherwise, and embarked on a study of women with CIS, without their consent, that involved merely observing, rather than definitively treating them. Many women subsequently developed cancer and some died. In 1984 Jones and senior colleagues Dr Bill McIndoe and Dr Jock McLean published a scientific paper that exposed the truth, and the disastrous outcome of Green's experiment.

Arias (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.38 $Following her recent Odes, the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet gives us a new collection of poems that sing of a woman’s intimate life and political conscience. The atom bomb, Breaking Bad, the cervix, Trayvon Martin, her mother’s return from the dead: the peerless Sharon Olds once again takes up subject matter that is both difficult and ordinary, elusive and everywhere. Each aria is shaped by its unique melody and moral logic, as Olds stands centre stage to account for her own late romance and chance wisdom, and faces the tragic life of our nation and our planet. ‘I cannot say I did not ask / to be born,’ begins one aria, which considers how, with what actions, with what thirst, we each ask for a turn, and receive our portion on earth. Olds delivers these pieces with all the passion, anguish, and solo force that make a great performance, in the process enlarging the soul of her readers.
