Moonwatcher's Memoir: A Diary of 2001: A Space Odyssey
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 96.87 $Dan Richter was a struggling mime artist in 1966 when he received a call summoning him to discuss the incomplete opening sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey, then being shot by Stanley Kubrick in London. Deeply impressed by the young mime, Kubrick promptly hired Richter to choreograph and star in “The Dawn of Man” sequence as Moonwatcher, the man-ape who opens the epic film about the origin and future of humankind. Moonwatcher’s Memoir is Richter’s day-by-day account of his year-long education in filmmaking under the command of one of cinema’s most innovative captains. Filled with illustrations and memorabilia from the making of 2001, this book will fascinate film aficionados, Kubrick devotees, and science fiction fans alike. Set three million years ago, “The Dawn of Man” tells the story of a tribe of our man-ape ancestors, who take the first step on the long road to modern humanity. Determined to make an anthropologically accurate film, Kubrick insisted on much more than the worn convention of men jumping around in “monkey suits.” Here are the stories behind 2001’s landmark achievements in make-up, costume, choreography, and cutting-edge cinematography that have made this film an enduring achievement. At once the story of Kubrick and his probing vision, the 2001 team and their interactions, and Dan Richter’s personal triumph under intense pressure, Moonwatcher’s Memoir is an inside look at eighteen unique minutes of film, climaxing in the longest flash forward in cinema’s history—three million years, from bone to space station, in a twenty-fourth of a second—as Moonwatcher hurls man’s first weapon into the sky and launches the episode into the stratosphere of film’s greatest moments. 24 pages of black-and-white photographs complete this rare behind-the-scenes narrative chronicling the filming of Stanley Kubrick's ultimate vision.

She Is Cuba : A Genealogy of the Mulata Body
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.55 $She is Cuba: A Genealogy of the Mulata Body traces the history of the Cuban mulata and her association with hips, sensuality and popular dance. It examines how the mulata choreographs her racialised identity through her hips and enacts an embodied theory called hip(g)nosis. By focusing on her living and dancing body in order to flesh out the process of identity formation, this book makes a claim for how subaltern bodies negotiate a cultural identity that continues to mark their bodies on a daily basis. Combining literary and personal narratives with historical and theoretical accounts of Cuban popular dance history, religiosity and culture, this work investigates the power of embodied exchanges: bodies watching, looking, touching and dancing with one another. It sets up a genealogy of how the representations and venerations of the dancing mulata continue to circulate and participate in the volatile political and social economy of contemporary Cuba.

Ghost Dancer: A Thriller
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.13 $From The Genesis Code to The Murder Artist, John Case has established himself as the master of unrelenting suspense. Now Case choreographs his most diabolically chilling novel to date, as the very fabric of civilization threatens to come apart in the hands of a brilliantly vengeful madman.Photojournalist Mike Burke carried his camera into every war zone and hellhole on earth–and came back with the pictures (and battle scars) to prove it. He was flying high until, quite suddenly, he wasn’t. When Burke’s helicopter crashed and burned in Africa, he came away with his life but lost his heart to the beautiful woman who saved him. That’s when he decided it was time to stop dancing with the devil. But a wicked twist of fate puts an end to Burke’s dreams, leaving him adrift in Dublin with bittersweet memories . . . and no appetite for danger. But the devil isn’t done with him yet.An ocean away, Jack Wilson leaves prison burning for revenge. Like Burke, Wilson has had something taken from him. And he, too, dreams of starting over. Only Wilson’s dream is the rest of the world’s nightmare. Driven by his obsession with a Native American visionary, and guided by the secret notebooks of Nikola Tesla, the man who is said to have “invented the twentieth century,” Wilson dreams of the Apocalypse–and plans to make it happen. As a terrifying worldwide chain reaction is set in motion, Burke alone grasps the impending horror of Wilson’s malevolent plan. With nothing left to lose, Burke pursues an American terrorist–a twisted genius who journeys from a lawless weapons arsenal in the Transdneister to the diamond fields of the Congo . . . to an isolated Nevada ranch. It is here, in a climactic showdown, that a determined Mike Burke faces a nemesis who knows no fear.John Case is the bestselling author of The Genesis Code, The First Horseman, The Syndrome, The Eighth Day, and The Murder Artist.

Tradition And Creativity In Japanese Dance
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 84.54 $The Kikunokai Dance Troupe, its name derived from the chrysanthemum (kiku in Japanese), was founded by Michiyo Hata in 1972. Trained in classical Japanese Kabuki dance by Onoe Kikunojo I, in 1970 Hata was tapped to choreograph dances for the Osaka World Fair, which brought her into contact with the vivid, dynamic folk dance that was still alive in rural and regional Japan. This inspired her to form the unique dance troupe Kikunokai, which draws on the classic and folk traditions to produce new works combining the best of both with an invigorating spirit and a warm humanism that speaks directly to our timesl Kikunokai's activities included training and developing young dancers, and researching and studying folk arts - including traditional Japanese folk instruments - from different regions of Japan. Kikunokai has performed with great success not only in Japan but also France, Germany, England, India, Singapore, Guam, Thailand, the United States, Brunei, and Malaysia. It was awarded the Excellent Art Prize at the 1976 Cultural Festival sponsored by the Cultural Agency of Japan, received an official commendation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1986, and it is the winner of many prizes and awards in Japan for its choreography and performances. The present book features beautiful color visual presentation of works of the traditional repertoire performed by founder Hata, as well as her original pieces choreographed for Kikunokai and performed by the troupe. The startling range of the troupe's repertory is eloquently documented in over 100 photographs. Brief but evocative essays by Hata describe the important role that Kyoto and the four seasons have played in her work, and the exciting and inspiring experience of choreographing the late Akira Kurosawa's film Dreams, portions of which were also danced by troupe members.
