Per analizzare il processo di trasformazione dell'identità femminile (individuale e collettiva) nella società italiana del '900, processo che ha portato le donne ad esprimersi come cittadine sulla scena pubblica, l'attenzione deve soffermarsi - quasi per necessità - sulla presenza delle donne nel mondo del lavoro. Il volume - con focus sull'Emilia Romagna - si propone di illustrare questo tema, ripercorrendo tempi e fasi della inclusione/esclusione femminile nel mondo del lavoro, individuandone cause e ragioni. Dopo aver tratteggiato l'impossibilità di accedere ad occupazioni ritenute naturalmente maschili di fine Ottocento-inizio Novecento, si è passati a delineare il riconoscimento ad esercitare tutte le professioni ottenuto dopo la prima guerra mondiale, riconoscimento negato e cancellato durante il periodo fascista, arrivando infine a illustrare la realizzazione della parità duramente conquistata con le lotte degli anni Cinquanta-Sessanta.
