Maria II - The extraordinary friendship of Maria and Victoria, two Queens in a world of men
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.00 $The queen of Portugal's correspondence with queen Victoria gives us a fantastic insight into the private life of two powerful women, both married to princes of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who are struggling to conciliate motherhood with the responsibility (and pleasure) of power. When only seven years old, Maria da Gloria became queen of Portugal. A country, on the other side of the ocean, where she had never been. She grew up in Brazil, spending the long warm days between the green hillocks and the white sandy beaches, secure in the love of her dearest mother, Leopoldina of Austria. The only shadow cast over this happiness was her father's mistress, Domitília, the favourite and most famous mistress of D. Pedro, the emperor of Brazil. In 1828 she departed for Vienna to be educated in her grandfather's court, but when she lost the throne to her uncle Miguel, she ended up in London. She became King George IV's protégé and he commissioned Lawrence to paint her portrait (on this book's cover). During her stay in London she met the heir presumptive, Alexandrina Victoria, and they forged a close bond that lasted a lifetime. When she was fourteen, the civil war was coming to an end and D. Maria set foot, for the first time, on her country's soil. Finally on the throne, she promised herself that she would be a good queen, and a happier one than her dearest mother had been. Her marriage to D. Fernando of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, father of her eleven children, was truly blissful, as she confides in her letters to her "Dear cousin Victoria" - now a queen herself, and married to Fernando's first cousin, Albert.

The Life of His Royal Highness, the Prince Consort, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.53 $THE LIFEOF HIS ROYAL HIGHNESSTHE PRINCE CONSOET.------*o*------CHAPTER XXIII.The policy of Louis Philippe had, as we have seen, for some time inspired the Prince and his Coburg friend with doubts of the stability of his power. The latter had written on the 1st of August, 1847 : ' Louis Philippe's ambiguous reputation as a master of the arts of statesmanship has been most unequivocally ruined by the Spanish intrigue. If he live long enough, he can hardly fail to suffer some portion of the punishment, which, according to the laws of nature, he has incurred.'It was the creed of both Stockmar and his pupil, that as surely as sorrow is ever found, in the words of our old poet, ' dogging sin,' so surely will retribution overtake the Sovereign, who thinks more of the immediate interests of his family or dynasty than of the well-being and advancement of his people. From what side this might come in the case of Louis Philippe it was impossible to foresee. From Tyranny to Freedom â" Memoirs of My Life
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.99 $From Tyranny to Freedom - "Memoirs of My Life" comprise the reminiscences of Countess Viktoria-Luise of Solms-Baruth, the first wife of Prince Friedrich Josias, youngest son and heir of Duke Carl Eduard of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. She was, quite likely, the first German female of royal lineage to marry an American officer, Captain Richard "Dick" Whitten, whom she met early in 1947. Their love affair seemed like a whirlwind and by November the couple joined their destinies and settled down to a long marriage. Viktoria-Luise was an amazing woman. Independent-minded, strong-willed, never easily defeated, she sought to rebuild her life on her own terms, while always keeping in mind the needs of her son, who stood to inherit the sizable legacy of the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. She grasped that life had changed for those in her milieu and sought to make the best of it. She fell in love with an US Army Captain, an attractive man who promised to take her on a new adventure in a faraway land. Viktoria-Luise jumped head-in, seized the moment, and built a new life. As with everything she tackled, she was thoroughly successful. Her unique position, provided by background and connections, makes her story even more appealing. Raised in a fairly conventional and old-world environment, she embraced love outside her circle and built a life not only in a new country, but also in a faraway continent. The memoirs provide a candid, detailed and eye-opening window into a world of privilege now gone. They are tribute to a human being who in spite of losing nearly all, rose from the ashes of a destroyed Europe to live a happy, admirable and fulfilled existence.

Alfred (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.73 $Prince Alfred, who was created Duke of Edinburgh in 1866 and became Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gothain 1893, was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A patron of the arts, pioneer philatelist and amateur violinist, he joined the Royal Navy as a boy and rose to become Admiral of the Fleet. At the age of eighteen he was elected King of Greece by overwhelming popular vote in a plebiscite, although political agreements between the Great Powers of Europe prevented him from accepting the vacant crown. The most widely traveled member of his family, he had visited all five continents by the age of twenty-seven, and while on a tour of Australia in 1868 he narrowly escaped assassination at the hands of a Fenian sympathizer. Married to Grand Duchess Marie of Russia, the only surviving daughter of Tsar Alexander II, at one stage he had to face the possibility that he might be required to fight on behalf of the British Empire against that of his father-in-law. His last years were overshadowed by marital difficulties, alcoholism and ill health, and the suicide of his only son and heir.
