Hydrophiloidea (Coleoptera) (World Catalogue of Insects)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 300.92 $Concerns about global biodiversity are rising dramatically, yet we are lagging behind in the most basic prerequisite for its understanding and conservation: the inventory. Insect species may make up five or ten times the number of all other plant and animal species combined, and as such they represent one of the major challenges in biosystematic science. World Catalogue of Insects is an initiative aiming at compiling worldscale, authoritative catalogues of monophyletic insect taxa. We are therefore proud to launch this major series. Volumes will as a minimum contain standard nomenclatoral information on all names pertaining to the taxon treated, including type locality and distribution to the extent this is relevant. Additional information is optional, e. g., location, status and condition of types; biology; bibliographical information; pest status; vector status; etc. This volume two focuses on Hydrophiloidea (Coleoptera). European Fauna of Oedemeridae: Coleoptera
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 241.00 $Argania Editio presents its first European Fauna, written by the same author of the Iberian Fauna of this family (1993). This book deals with the 79 species of Oedemeridae recorded in Europe's west of Pechora, Volga and Don rivers, including the European part of Turkey, Crete and the Dodecanese archipelago. Thus, the Caucasus is excluded. It starts with a wide introduction, followed by a systematical chapter, including determination keys of all the taxa up to level subspecies, and many support drawings. All the descriptions of the taxa and general data on them are given, including its biology (icons of the habitat and the emergence period), the geographical distribution (maps), and a complete bibliography. The whole text is accompanied by drawings of any interesting morphological details. Finally, a complete systematical catalogue with the type species and all the known synonymies is added. As usually, plentiful bibliography and large full-color plates of all the species are also included.

Field Guide to Northeastern Longhorned Beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.98 $The Cerambycidae, or longhorned beetles, are one of the larger insect families, with some 20,000 described species (and thousands more undescribed) worldwide, from all continents except Antarctica. The large size and variety of coloration and sculpture of longhorned beetles make them a relatively easy group of insects to identify, especially considering the number of species (some 1,100 species estimated in North America excluding Mexico); this guide attempts to exploit this. This guide includes over 600 color images, covering 342 of the 344 species and subspecies of longhorned beetles that have been definitively recorded in northeastern North America, along with diagnostic features to enable recognition of all these species, as well as data on distribution, phenology, and larval feeding habits.

The rest of the Indian species will be dealt in the second part of this volume very soon. A Guide to Beetles of Borneo
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 79.99 $Scientifically, beetles belong to the Coleoptera, an insect order characterized by a pair of hard wing cases or elytra. These are believed to be the single most important feature that has contributed to the evolutionary success of beetles. These strong elytra grant the beetle an amour-like protection: when stepped on over soft ground, it is quite likely to be pushed unharmed into the mud, whereas other insects would be crushed. Beetles are also generally characterized by their biting mouth-parts. The word 'beetle' actually comes from the Middle English word 'bityl' or 'betyll' meaning 'little biter'. It could be said that the Creator must have been very fond of beetles. Or at least it would seem so because more than 400,000 species of insects are beetles, a significant two-fifths of all six-legged creatures. In comparison, there are a mere 44,000 species of vertebrates and some 250,000 species of known plants. Their diversity is not only evident in number, but also size, colour, pattern, form, as well as strategies of behaviour, defence, reproduction, and adaptation, already much appreciated since the time of the Pharaohs. Indeed, we live in the Age of Beetles! Beetles are certainly important to study if we are to understand the diversity and ecology of insect fauna in various tropical habitats. Although somewhat diverse and ubiquitous in terrestrial habitats, they are less commonly encountered than moths, butterflies and ants. This is mainly because more than 95% of beetles are less than a centimetre long and they are often not found in swarms as one species like ants. Many are only active at night. Borneo's mesmerising natural biodiversity is made up of very many species, including beetles, and very many are also endemic or confined to this island. It follows that it is virtually impossible to attempt including all beetles in the present account.
