An indication of Erasmus' unflagging interest in classical proverbs is that almost 500 of the 951 adages translated in this volume did not make their first appearance until the edition of 1533. Following in the tradition of meticulous scholarship for which the Collected Works of Erasmus is widely known, the notes to this volume identify the classical sources and illustrate how the content of his commentaries on the adages often reflects Erasmus' scholarly and editing interests in the classical authors at a particular time. Oscar Zariski's earliest papers originally appeared in 1924 and have been followed by a steady accretion ever since. That at least four volumes are required to publish his collected papers is an index to his productiveness and persistence; that they have been collected at all is a tribute to their continuing importance in the field of algebraic geometry. The first two volumes of Zariski's papers were published in 1973. Volume I, Foundations of Algebraic Geometry and Resolution of Singularities, was edited by H. Hironaka and D. Mumford, and Volume II, Holomorphic Functions and Linear Systems, was edited by M. Artin and D. Mumford. The papers contained in this third volume were originally published between 1925 and 1966, but the heart of the book is a sequence of papers, topological in nature, that appeared during the period 1928-1937. Zariski writes that "the reader will find in the introduction by M. Artin and B. Mazur an illuminating discussion of these papers and of their impact on later work by other mathematicians. Their discussion includes, in particular, my papers dealing with the following three topics: (1) solvability in radicals of equations of certain plane curves; (2) the fundamental group of the residual space of plane algebraic curves; (3) the topology of the singularities of plane algebraic curves." M. Artin (of MIT) and B. Mazur (of Harvard) both studied under Zariski at Harvard and have since become his colleagues. This volume of The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein presents Einstein's writings for the two-year period starting in October 1909. The initial date marks Einstein's departure from the Swiss Patent Office at Bern, which had been his professional home for seven years, and the beginning of his first academic appointment, at the University of Zurich. The volume concludes with the masterful report that Einstein, by then a full professor at the German-language university in Prague, gave to the original Solvay Congress, the first international meeting devoted to the problems of radiation and the quantum theory. Most of Einstein's efforts during these years went into his struggle with these ever more perplexing problems of quanta, on which he made discouragingly little progress. Einstein's new academic career naturally required him to teach, and almost half of this volume consists of the previously unpublished notes he wrote in preparation for his lectures on mechanics, on electricity and magnetism, and on kinetic theory and statistical mechanics. The last of these are particularly interesting in reflecting some of his research interests. Several papers here are concerned with aspects of the special theory of relativity, but it is Einstein's article of June 1911 that is a harbinger of things to come: it contains his calculation of the bending of light in a gravitational field on the basis of his equivalence principle. These papers document his development in the discipline during the years leading up to the publication of Method in Theology, and beyond to 1980 when he was more engaged in his writings and seminars on macroeconomics.Philosophical and Theological Papers 1965-1980 is divided into five sections, forming units on the basis of dates. The three central sections are each a set of lectures respectively given at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Gonzaga University in Spokane, and Trinity College (University of Toronto). Although there is some repetition amongst the lecture sets and in relation to other more familiar works, this repetition displays occasional new turns of phrase that the careful reader will note. In at least one instance, familiar material suddenly opens out onto expressions not to be found anywhere else in Lonergan's work. Other very interesting developments regard the movement from speaking of the immutability of dogmas to their permanence of meaning and the permutations among 'real self-transcendence,' 'performative self-transcendence,' and 'moral self-transcendence.'
