The Everyman Anthology of Poetry for Children (Everyman's Library Children's Classics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.98 $The Everyman Anthology of Poetry for Children is a treasury of great poems chosen for the sheer pleasure they offer to readers of all ages. Compiler Gillian Avery's aim was to avoid condescending to children and "to assemble a collection of poems that the owner will not outgrow." With that in mind, she has included very few works that were written solely for a young audience. The more than 250 pieces gathered here range from ballads to epics, from inspired nonsense to memorable reflections on love and death. A wide variety of poets grace these pages, from Mother Goose to Shakespeare, from Emily Dickinson to Noel Coward, from Robert Frost to Ogden Nash. Coleridge's "Kubla Khan" and Rosetti's "Goblin Market" will enchant young readers as much as T. S. Eliot's "The Naming of Cats" and Lewis Carroll's "The Mock-Turtle's Song" will entertain them. Adorned with engravings by the eighteenth-century artist Thomas Bewick, this collection belongs in every family's library.

Cry for Help: 36 Scam Emails from Africa
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 76.22 $The tone is carefully chosen: subservient, condescending, solicitous, disdainful. Beyond Contempt: How Liberals Can Communicate Across the Great Divide
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.08 $How liberals can talk and listen to Trump supporters without blowing a fuse American politics has become a nasty blood sport, and each side bears responsibility for its part in deepening and inflaming the divide. Liberals often come across as self-righteous, condescending, and contemptuous of conservatives, an attitude that has magnified the appeal of right-wing populism. This superior attitude, especially when infused with classist scorn, antagonizes blue collar conservatives and entrenches their loyalty to Trump. In Beyond Contempt , Erica Etelson shows how liberal disdain strengthens Trump’s hand and how liberals can instead communicate respectfully and effectively across the political divide without soft-pedaling their beliefs. Using Powerful Non-Defensive Communication,™ liberals can express themselves in ways that inspire open-minded consideration rather than defensive rejection. Providing detailed instruction and dozens of examples of questions and statements on hot button topics, Beyond Contempt shows how to engage in productive dialogue that defuses hostility, builds trust, opens hearts and minds, and -- just maybe -- discovers common ground. Beyond Contempt is the must-have guide for anyone who has long wished that political discussions, and Thanksgiving dinner, didn’t end in frustration and anger. Equipped with this guide, liberals can begin to build bridges and heal a nation that has become perilously polarized. Erica Etelson is a writer, community activist, and certified Powerful Non-Defensive Communication™ facilitator. A former human rights attorney, she has advocated in support of welfare recipients, prisoners, indigenous peoples, immigrants, environmental activists, and clean, community-owned energy. Following the 2016 election, Etelson became active in the resistance movement and in red-blue dialogue initiatives.

Freud for Historians
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 41.33 $Is psychoanalysis a legitimate tool for helping us understand the past? Many traditional historians have answered with an emphatic no, greeting the introduction of Freud into historical study with responses ranging from condescending skepticism to outrage. Now Peter Gay, one of America's leading historians, builds an eloquent case for "history informed by psychoanalysis" and offers an impressive rebuttal to the charges of the profession's anti-Freudians. In this book, Gay takes on the opposition's arguments, defending psychoanalysis as a discipline that can enhance social, economic, and literary studies. No mere polemic, Freud for Historians is a thoughtful and detailed contribution to a major intellectual debate.

Anything Goes
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.21 $One has to dig for Gallagher's story: "The jazz-age adventures of Neysa McMein and her extravagant circle of friends." The text's circumlocutions are a hindrance and so is the author's condescending air toward the witty company who made famous the Round Table at New York's Algonquin Hotel in the 1920s. Margaret McMein (1888-1949) left her prosaic Quincy, Ill., hometown as a young woman and became a noted magazine illustrator in Manhattan. There are repetitious details on her background and life after she adopted the tonier name Neysa. A beauty, she was beloved by many of the men who crowded her salon daily: Alex Woolcott, Harpo Marx, Noel Coward, Jascha Heifitz, etc. Helen Hayes, as well as other friends quoted here, agrees that Neysa was popular with women as well, but some were jealous. Although she and her husband Jack Baragwanath had other love affairs, they remained married from 1923 until her death at age 61. Neysa McMein, free spirit, deserves a more appreciative book; so do her friends. Gallagher teaches at the City University of New York. Photos not seen by PW. Picturing Political Power : Images in the Women's Suffrage Movement
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 42.67 $For as long as women have battled for equitable political representation in America, those battles have been defined by images—whether illustrations, engravings, photographs, or colorful chromolithograph posters. Some of these pictures have been flattering, many have been condescending, and others downright incendiary. They have drawn upon prevailing cultural ideas of women’s perceived roles and abilities and often have been circulated with pointedly political objectives.Picturing Political Power offers perhaps the most comprehensive analysis yet of the connection between images, gender, and power. In this examination of the fights that led to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, Allison K. Lange explores how suffragists pioneered one of the first extensive visual campaigns in modern American history. She shows how pictures, from early engravings and photographs to colorful posters, proved central to suffragists’ efforts to change expectations for women, fighting back against the accepted norms of their times. In seeking to transform notions of womanhood and win the right to vote, white suffragists emphasized the compatibility of voting and motherhood, while Sojourner Truth and other leading suffragists of color employed pictures to secure respect and authority. Picturing Political Power demonstrates the centrality of visual politics to American women’s campaigns throughout the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, revealing the power of images to change history.
