The Controversy over Capitalism
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.43 $This book presents an analysis of classical Russian Populism, shown as an ideological structure within which many positions were possible. Walicki studies the confrontation of Populism and Marxism: changing attitudes toward Marxism in the Populist milieu and the controversy between Populists and Marxists over the future of Russia. The Controversy over Capitalism, available here in paper for the first time, reinterprets the ideology of Russian Populism. Andrzej Walicki argues that Populism is a reaction to the development of capitalism in Russia and a response to the capitalist economy and socialist ideologies of the West.

The Controversy of Zion
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.35 $It is one of the commonplaces of history that adverse circumstances offer no obstacle to men of outstanding energy and ability. Douglas Reed, who described himself as "relatively unschooled", started out in life as an office boy at the age of thirteen and he was a bank clerk at nineteen before enlisting at the outbreak of World War I. A less promising preparation for a man destined to be one of the most brilliant political analysts and descriptive writers of the century could hardly be imagined. He was already 26 years old when he reached the London Times in 1921 as a telephonist and clerk; and he was 30 when he finally reached journalism as sub-editor. Three years later he became assistant Times corespondent in Berlin before moving on to Vienna as Chief Central European corespondent. Reed broke with the Times in October 1943, near the time of the appearance of a book which was to win him instant world fame: INSANITY FAIR, a charming combination of autobiography and contemporary history. This was followed by more best sellers in quick succession. Commencing in 1951, Douglas Reed spent more than three years writing THE CONTROVERSY OF ZION - all 300,000 words of it. He completed the epilogue in 1956. Although there is correspondence to show that the book was once discussed with his publisher, the manuscript was never submitted, but remained for 22 years stowed away in Reed's home in Durban, South Africa. The question remains. Why?

Controversy in Victorian Geology: The Cambrian-Silurian Dispute
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.49 $This book aims at serious goals and achieves all of theirs. It pros ides x fundamentally new interpretation of the Cambrian-Silurian dispute based on exacting research and thoughtful interpretation. It also relates the dispute both to the general social background of British geology and to the distinctive personal experiences of Sedgswick and Murchison. Secord writes clear, rigorous prose and provides plenty of helpful illustrations. One cannot ask for more" - William Montgomery, Science "Secord gives a dazzlingly detailed account of this scientific trench warfare and its social consequences. One ends up with a marvellous feeling for the major taxonomic enterprises in Darwin's younger day: mapping, ordering, conquering 'taming the "chaos" of the strata. All of these of course had social and imperial ramifications; and Secord mentions geology's moral appeal (in supporting a divinely-stratified Creation) to a beleaguered elite intent on subduing the lower orders. We also get a wonderful insight into the bitty slay these taxonomic enterprises progressed. . . . What comes across is how? our supposedly 'inert' taxonomic constructs still reflect their contingent heritage" - Adrian Desmond, London Review of Books "James Secord provides a fascinating history of one of the most celebrated altercations in 19th-century science-the controversy over the proper boundary between the Cambrian and Silurian divisions in the oldest fossil-bearing rocks. By integrating the social and technical aspects of the conflict, the author opens up a range of new approaches to the history of natural science in the Victorian era. The result is a vivid story of the human effects of scientific partisanship and an important contribution to the study of the actual practice of science" - European Journal of Engineering Education" [Secord's] book must become essential reading for any serious student of the history of the earth-sciences but it also

Controversies in Body Theology
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.64 $This is a collection which brings together authors from around the world. The book dares to examine some of the most extreme approaches to the body that our society engages with. Topics range from cosmetic surgery and the bible to the sacramental nature of self harm in young girls. Along the way the book looks at the Puritan heritage of 'Extreme Makeover' programmes and the pernicious theology inherent in 'Slim for Him' programmes.

Controversies in Globalization : Contending Approaches to International Relations
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 97.48 $Debate style readers can be powerful teaching tools, but only if the readings really speak to one another; otherwise, the crux of the debate is lost on students. Peter M. Haas and John M. Hird′s Controversies in Globalization solves this issue by inviting 17 pairs of scholars and practitioners to write specifically for the volume, directly addressing key questions in international relations through concise "yes" and "no" pieces on topics related to security, political economy, the environment, public health, democracy, demography, and social issues. At the request of reviewers, new to this edition are three chapters covering the financial crisis, maritime security, and international conflict. Chapter headnotes written by the editors effectively frame each debate and make clear what is at stake from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Concluding discussion questions in each chapter encourage critical thinking and analysis.

Controversies in Post Keynesian Economics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 41.48 $Controversies in post Keynesian economics proves that it is possible to meet the most exacting scholarly standards while also managing to make economics enjoyable to read. Professor Davidson provides a lucid review of the debates between neo-classical Keynesians, monetarists and post Keynesians. These debates have been rekindled as a result of the revitalisation of the post Keynesian tradition coupled with the failure of the monetarist approach to explain economic developments in the 1980s. He develops this history of the struggle for the minds of economists, as well as explaining in intelligible language, the different roles assigned to money, contracts and the uncertainty of the inflationary process. In conclusion, he discusses which of these theories is likely to be most relevant to the economic problems that will be facing the free world in the 21st century.
