Our Times: The Age of Elizabeth II
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 37.19 $When Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953, there were many who proclaimed that a new Elizabethan Age had begun. Few could have any inkling, however, of the stupendous changes that were going to take place, in Britain and around the world. The collapse of British power in the world and the near-evaporation of its wealth were established facts, but few people had even begun to understand them.In the third book in A.N. Wilson’s acclaimed histories, Our Times follows the beginnings of modern Britain from the 1950s with the Suez crisis, immigration, the Angry Young Men and Harold Macmillan, to the Sixties and changes in attitudes towards divorce and homosexuality, the rise of satire and the boom in pop music and fashion. Through the Seventies, with Vietnam and the Cold War looming large, and the Labour government that ushered in the Winter of Discontent, to the Thatcher government of the Eighties and the collapse of the Soviet Union, which signalled the end of a political era in Britain, up to the current period, Wilson argues, of unprecedented peace and prosperity.

The Complete Works of Elizabeth of the Trinity, vol. 2 (featuring Her Letters from Carmel)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 69.33 $Translated by Anne Englund Nash. Includes all her letters from Carmel, plus diagrams and 8 photos. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity (Elizabeth Catez) is a mystic of our times, who entered Carmel in 1901 at the age of twenty-one, and died there five years later. Her biblical spirituality, based on the epistles of her dear Saint Paul and the mystery of the divine indwelling, has inspired countless Christians. This second of three volumes of her Complete Works contains all of Elizabeth's surviving letters from Carmel, along with 8 photos. In simple and tender language, writing to friends and family, Elizabeth returns again and again to the great themes of her spirituality: the indwelling Trinity, silence and solitude, living by love, becoming a praise of glory (laudem gloriae) by sharing in the dying and rising of Jesus Christ. Here too we find many of her best-known sayings, e.g., I have found my heaven on earth, for heaven is God, and God is in my soul. In his introductions and careful notes, Father Conrad De Meester, O.C.D., explains the background of each of Elizabeth's letters from Carmel, most of which have never before appeared in English. Anne Englund Nash continues the style set in the first volume of the Complete Works, presenting a translation that reflects both the literary nuances and spirit of the original French texts.

The Letters of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Barrett, 1845-1846
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 65.00 $This is the 1969 edition, edited by Elvan Kintner. It contains over 15 illustrations including a frontispiece in Volume one of Robert Browning and a frontispiece in Volume two of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. It contains a 24 page introduction by Elvan Kintner, as well as an epilogue. There is an eight page biographical appendix along with a bibliography and index. This edition of the Barrett – Browning letters began in connection with the preparation of a doctoral dissertation. A preliminary version of the undertaking was accepted in 1953 by the faculty of the graduate school of Yale University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a PhD degree. The author has tried to augment that study so as to produce in addition of the letters that would make them genuinely available both to scholars into interested readers in general. Here we have not only both sides of the correspondence but contained within it, in the words of the two lovers themselves, both of them poets, one of the few love stories from real life that can compete in plot interest with the art of the fictioner. This story itself has been re-told many times, such as in Virginia Wolf. The inherent interest is only partly that it is so unlike routine human experience; it lies rather infected Browning and Miss Barrett reenact an arch typical myth.
