Gateway: Dr. Thomas Walker & the Opening of Kentucky
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 81.72 $Daniel Boone did not discover Cumberland Gap, nor was he the first explorer of Kentucky, then an unknown "Wilderness" on the Western frontier of the Colony of Virginia. In 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker, Agent of the Loyal Company, and 5 others, discovered Cumberland Gap, discovered and named the Cumberland River, discovered Pine Mountain Gap ("The Narrows"), Cumberland Ford -- the only place where the river could be easily crossed by people, horses and wagons -- and he built the first cabin in Kentucky. Walker's Jounral, maps, and surveys led to The Wilderness Road, over which 300,000 pioneer settlers entered Kentucky. The book has 90 illustrations -- photographs, maps, holographs pages from Walker's Journal, and through words and images makes the period come alive. Walker was a physician, surveyor, entrepreneur, explorer, high official of Virginia, a negotiator of Indian treaties, and a supremely successful speculator in frontier land. This is the ONLY book-length work on an important (through unfairly obscure) leading member of Virginia's 18th Century "landed gentry." The book provides interesting insights into the French and Indian War, and the Amereican Revolution, including the role of George Rogers Clark. Walker was a close friend of Peter Jefferson, and was for a time, the guardian of his young son Thomas, the future President. He was also connected by marriage, friendship and shared business interests with George Washington, James Madison, Joshua Fry, and with every leading Virginian of his time.

In the Steps of Saint Paul
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 11.29 $Drawing mainly on Luke's account in Acts, as well as on Paul's own letters, Peter Walker reconstructs Paul's wide-ranging travels, detailing some of the most important sites of the early church. We begin in Damascus, then follow Paul on his first and second 'missionary journeys', then trace his final visit to Jerusalem and Caesarea, and eventually arrive in Rome. Each chapter focuses on a particular site and includes: an opening section telling Paul's story within that location; a list of key dates giving readers an overview of significant events associated with that place; and a final section exploring the location as a visitor might encounter it today. Readers are transported to the rugged 'Cilician Gates' of southern Turkey, the market places of Athens, Corinth and Ephesus, the bleak expanses of ancient Galatia, and the wintry, wind-swept shores of Malta.

Picturing Faith: Photography and the Great Depression [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.00 $In the midst of the Great Depression, the American government initiated one of the most ambitious national photographic projects ever undertaken. Such photographers as Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, and Gordon Parks—all then virtually unknown—were commissioned to chronicle in pictures the economic struggle and social dislocation of the Depression era. They explored every facet of rural life in an effort to document the troubles, as well as the spirit, of the nation.Fanning out across the country, these photographers captured a nation alive with religious faith—from Dust Bowl migrants singing hymns to orthodox Jews praying in rural Connecticut. In Picturing Faith, the preeminent historian of religion Colleen McDannell recounts the history of this extraordinary project, telling the stories of the men and women who participated in it and exploring these little-known images of America.Lavishly illustrated, Picturing Faith teases out the various and conflicting ways that these photographers portrayed American religion and enhances our understanding of how religion was practiced during this critical period of American history.

Self-portrait with donors;: Confessions of an art collector
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 102.56 $From Kirkus Reviews, Oct. 1974: The title is something of a trompe l'oeil -- Walker, first the curator, then the director of Washington's National Gallery since its inception -- reveals very little of himself and is always modest and courteous in this guided tour of his life as an intermediary -- ""collecting collectors who would. . . become donors."" After Harvard, Walker spent three of his best and happiest years in the tutelage of Berenson in his beautiful sanctuary, I Tatti -- then as a still very young man assisted Mellon with his new gallery. His book rarely deals in the covert, avid scuffle for great works although his purchase of Leonardo's inaccessible Ginevra de Benci, from Liechtenstein, took a persistent sixteen years. Mostly he discusses men of great wealth who were able to vicariously achieve immortality through their acquisitions and later benevolences: two generations of Mellons; the Kress brothers; the tenacious Chester Dale guided by the taste of his wife; bargain hunter-entrepreneur ArmandHammer who liked to buy but then give away; Walker's close friends the Wrightsmans who he claims have the ""finest collection"" in the US. Walker teaches and chides from experience: collect contemporaries when you are young; beware of fashion (and the Impressionists); buy only what you genuinely love, although the collector inevitably becomes insatiable. And additional caveats for museums in an expansionist era. . . . All of which is to say that with genuine luster rather than the hustling chutzpah and razzle-dazzle of Duveen, Walker quietly ministered to the higher interests of art, artists and proud possessors.
