Derelict Paradise: Homelessness and Urban Development in Cleveland, Ohio [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.84 $Seeking answers to the question, "Who benefits from homelessness?" this book takes the reader on a sweeping tour of Cleveland's history from the late nineteenth-century through the early twenty-first. Daniel Kerr shows that homelessness has deep roots in the shifting ground of urban labor markets, social policy, downtown development, the criminal justice system, and corporate power. Rather than being attributable to the illnesses and inadequacies of the unhoused themselves, it is a product of both structural and political dynamics shaping the city. Kerr locates the origins of today's shelter system in the era that followed the massive railroad rebellions of 1877. From that period through the Great Depression, business and political leaders sought to transform downtown Cleveland to their own advantage. As they focused on bringing business travelers and tourists to the city and beckoned upper-income residents to return to its center, they demolished two downtown working-class neighborhoods and institutionalized a shelter system to contain and control the unhoused and unemployed. The precedents from this period informed the strategies of the post–World War II urban renewal era as the "new urbanism" of the late twentieth century. The efforts of the city's elites have not gone uncontested. Kerr documents a rich history of opposition by people at the margins of whose organized resistance and everyday survival strategies have undermined the grand plans crafted by the powerful and transformed the institutions designed to constrain the lives of the homeless.

Derelict Air: From Collected Out [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.00 $More than 400 pages of Edward Dorn’s previously uncollected poetry gleaned from ephemera, correspondence, and notebooks housed at numerous archives in the United States and the UK are gathered here in Derelict Air. From Dorn’s first Beat poems in 1952 and visionary juvenalia from his study at Black Mountain to the long poems that were central to the development of the British Poetry Revival and translations of native texts from the Mayans and Aztecs, the transatlantic roots of Dorn’s anticapitalism are fully visible. Whereas Dorn’s Collected Poems exhibits the poet that he became, Derelict Air reflects a career of becoming, full of unacknowledged successes in the diverse forms of the lyric, the pronouncement, the mock-epic, and the epigram. Recovering four lost books, this collection significantly expands Dorn’s oeuvre, including impassioned outbursts written during the Cuban missile crisis, illustrated bucolics for an unfinished children’s book, “confetti poems” meant to shower the 1968 DNC, outtakes from his sci-fi epic Gunslinger, and a relentless extension of his 1990s “stock ticker.” Complete with scholarly endnotes, manuscript facsimiles, and a cover by the painter Raymond Obermayr, this substantial offering of Edward Dorn’s poetry is a must-have for any reader interested in postwar American modernism.

Notes from a Derelict Culture
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.35 $The essays in this book elaborate an overall view of the central predicament confronting the West today: a theologically-inspired terrorist movement, the left-liberal belief-system that dominates the Western sensibility, the plague of political correctness that devitalizes language and obscures truth, and the almost universal opprobrium in which America—and by extrapolation the historical endowment of Western civilization—is held by the official institutions of the international community and by liberal culture. For too many years now we have practiced the rites of evasion, craving asylum in blindness, conciliation, sophistry and equivocation. Many flinch from expressing their convictions plainly, fearing to offend their readers and imperil their professional credentials. There is no more pressing requirement for us today than the obligation to seek the truth and to speak clearly, boldly, and without compromise, an endeavor with which this book is fundamentally engaged.
