George Moore, 1852-1933
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 78.27 $George Moore is a large figure in Irish letters, but a curious one. Everyone knows of him, few know about him. A biography of Moore is a huge and fascinating opportunity to explore an entire cultural world. Frazier does this, never forgetting that his main task is to narrate the abundant life of Moore himself. To do so he has seen papers in Ireland, the US, Paris and London that no other scholar has used, enabling him to reconstruct the details of Moore's romantic life. Having had affairs with Pearl Craigie and Olive Schreiner, among others, Moore settled into a long and secret liaison with another man's wife, Lady Maud Cunard whose daughter, Nancy Cunard, was very probably Moore's child, as Frazier here reveals for the first time.

Sturmstaffel 1: Reich Defence 1943-1944 the War Diary
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 87.41 $R. C. ('Dick') Riley (1921-2006) was one of the country's foremost railway photographers; starting with mono just prior to World War 2, he moved over to colour in the early 1950s, when such film was both expensive and slow. Working in the banking industry gave him the opportunity to travel widely and, aided by his trackside pass and contacts within the railway industry, he was able to access locations and views from which many other photographers were excluded. From his early work through to the end of main line steam in 1968 he took countless thousands of transparencies; over the years a number have been published but there remain a significant number that have yet to see the light of day. This large landscape format book showcases over 200 colour images taken by Dick Riley between the early 1950s and 1968. Whilst the bias will be towards the Southern and Western regions, the book will also include a significant number of illustrations on both the Eastern and London Midland regions. Dick Riley was also a prolific photographer of industrial railways, and the book will include a brief selection featuring these sites, as well as recording aspects such as signs and minutiae, which were largely ignored by other photographers. The book will also include vignettes of these photographs. The text has been compiled by his close friend and executor Rodney Lissenden, who had access to Dick Riley's personal diaries for anecdotal tales relating to the images concerned.

Architecture & Programming of the Intel X86 Family: 40th Anniversary Edition
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.65 $This new effort was triggered by the introduction of a new chip for the 40th anniversary of the x86 architecture. Who would have thought the architecture would remain commercially viable at the time? This gives us a unique opportunity to see how Moore's law has held up over time, and to compare and contrast the 40-year old part with the current one, to understand where we are coming from, and heading to. I removed a lot of the material from the original on the basics, including the number systems, data structures, I/O methods, etc. These are generic, and can be found in many Introduction to Computer Science texts. I have added details on the 40th anniversary chip, did a compare and contrast with the original 8086, and included some material on AMD's rival x86-architecture chips.

Gotta Get Theroux This: My Life and Strange Times in Television
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 41.34 $In 1994 fledgling journalist Louis Theroux was given a one-off gig on Michael Moore’s TV Nation, presenting a segment on apocalyptic religious sects. Gawky, socially awkward and totally unqualified, his first reaction to this exciting opportunity was panic. But he’d always been drawn to off-beat characters, so maybe his enthusiasm would carry the day. Or, you know, maybe it wouldn’t . . .In his book, Louis takes the reader on a joyous journey through his life and unexpectedly successful career. Nervously accepting the BBC’s offer of his own series, he went on to create an award-winning documentary style that has seen him immersed in worlds as diverse as racist US militias and secretive pro-wrestlers, the violent gangs of Johannesburg and extreme drinkers in London. Arguably his biggest challenge was corralling celebrities in his When Louis Met series, with Jimmy Savile proving most elusive. Blindsided when the revelations about Savile came to light, Louis was to reflect again on the nature of evil he had spent decades uncovering.Filled with wry observation, larger-than-life characters, and self-deprecating humour, this is Louis at his insightful and honest best.
