Burckhardt hielt sich dreieinhalb Jahre zumeist in Aleppo und Damaskus auf. Von dort aus unternahm er Reisen in den Hauran, das mittlere Orontes-Tal und auf die Halbinsel Sinai. Auf seinen zahlreichen Reisen entwickelte sich Burckhardt zum Entdecker bedeutender Landschaften und Ruinenstätten sowie Nubiens. Einen Schwerpunkt bilden dabei seine Transkriptionen zahlreicher griechischer und semitischer Inschriften. Nach seinem frühem Tod wurden seine wichtigsten Tagebücher und Aufzeichnungen von der "Gesellschaft zur Beförderung der Entdeckungen im Innern von Afrika" herausgebracht. Band 1 umfasst die 1810 und 1812 im Libanongebirge, im Hauran und im weiteren Syrien unternommenen Reisen. This fourth volume of essays under the title The Shaping of English Poetry consolidates the work of the previous three volumes on the great subjects of English literature in the Medieval and Renaissance periods. The Norman Conquest of England built upon the rich foundation of Anglo-Saxon England but did not destroy it; thus the present volume begins with the commemoration of English heroism in The Battle of Maldon. In the late twelfth century we encounter in Chrétien de Troyes's seminal romance Le Chevalier de la Charrete a new kind of hero in Lancelot, abject and obedient before his mistress, although Chrétien himself is not an uncritical admirer of the sanctity of adulterous love. Hence the importance of Dante's exposition of love in Purgatorio, XVIII, which forms a background to the essays here on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the Parliament of Fowls. The volume concludes with essays on Chaucer's Knight's, Monk's and Nun's Priest's Tales, which form part of a long-term project to interpret the Canterbury Tales as a unified whole and not merely a series of fragments awaiting revision on Chaucer's death.

De Republica Anglorum was written by Sir Thomas Smith in 1562-5 when he was Queen Elizabeth's ambassador to France. His avowed intention was to describe English social institutions, judicial system and governmental procedures for the benefit of foreigners, explaining in what way the English system 'differs from the others'. A renowned scholar, with considerable experience in government, he succeeded in producing an account which has always been considered a major source of information and insight into Elizabethan England. This edition endeavours to establish the original text as written in the 1560s. The discovery of several manuscript texts written before the 1583 printed edition and their collation with the 1583 edition allow us to see the nature and extent of the alterations made. For the first time one can read De Republica Anglorum without the heavy amending hand of the 1583 editor and approach the text as Smith wrote it in the 1560s. The new text throws light on the old problem of plagiarism in certain chapters of the work and on the question of changing procedures in Elizabethan government.
