The Dismissal of Miss Ruth Brown: Civil Rights, Censorship, and the American Library
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.22 $In 1950, after three decades of exemplary service, Brown was summarily dismissed from her job as librarian at the Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Public Library. Though the ostensible reason was circulating subversive materials, Robbins (Library and Information studies, U. of Wisconsin-Madison) says it was because she advocated racial equality and had helped form a group affiliated with the Congress of Racial Equality. She emphasizes the matrix of personal, community, state, and national forces that can still lead to censorship, intolerance, and suppression. Annotation c. Dismissal Doesn't Have to be Difficult: What Every Administrator and Supervisor Should Know
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.16 $In Dismissal Doesn't Have to be Difficult, author Chet Elder gives lie to the universal belief that tenure is a firewall of protection for unsatisfactory teachers. Elder provides school administrators with a simple method, called Exit Counseling, to rid their schools of mediocre, marginal, and incompetent teachers. He teaches principals how to build a case and document it so tightly that virtually any union challenge will fail. His theory is simple straightforward, clear, and concise.Elder watched and learned a lot about teacher dismissal over the 32 years he spent as an education association UniServ Director in Maryland and Delaware. Having "worked the other side", he shares the techniques, tips, and even the traps he learned and used over the years. He has interacted with hundreds of administrators and teachers, he knows both sides' vulnerable spots, and in Dismissal Doesn't Have to be Difficult, he shares that knowledge. In case format, Elder uses his "war stories" to illustrate and confront school reform, incompetence, insubordination, negligence, union secret weapons and tactics, grievance avoidance, and bouncing lemons. This book is a user friendly, handy reference every administrator and supervisor should have on hand.

The First Dismissal (Penguin Special)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.28 $How Governor Macquarie invented an idea of Australia, a convict built it—and how Britain tried to tear it down. While violent revolution and social upheaval rocked Europe, far away in New South Wales, Governor Lachlan Macquarie was sowing the seeds for the Australian idea of the "fair go." Macquarie was a reformer and an emancipator. He believed that a person's worth—be they gentry, infantry, or convict – lay in what they were capable of doing, not what they had done in the past. He freed the brilliant, mercurial convict Francis Greenway and appointed him government architect for the buildings that would shape a new nation. But to the Tory British government of 1820, Macquarie and Greenway's unconventional alliance threatened NSW's very legitimacy as a penal colony. Here Luke Slattery breathes dramatic life into Australia's first political dismissal and, along the way, maps Macquarie and Greenway's bold collaborations and extraordinary architectural—and cultural—legacy.

Truth of the Matter: His Powerful Account of the Dismissal
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.76 $On Remembrance Day, 1975, the Governor-General of Australia, Sir John Kerr, sacked the Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam. The Dismissal was the culmination of almost three years of political conflict, as Whitlam's reforming Labor government rammed home overdue legislative reforms in the face of implacable, and increasingly bitter, conservative opposition. The focus of the Opposition's scheming was the Senate, where its leaders blocked supply in order to force a political crisis. Whitlam, famous for his 'crash through or crash' style, refused to compromise with his political enemies. After consulting secretly with the Opposition Leader, Malcolm Fraser, and the Chief Justice, Sir Garfield Barwick, Kerr abruptly informed the PM that he had withdrawn his commission. Half an hour later, Kerr swore Fraser in as 'caretaker Prime Minister'. At an election a month later, the conservatives were returned to office. Controversy and recrimination followed. Many Australians, including Whitlam himself, believed he had been the victim of a coup. In 1979, he published his own account of the events of 1975, The Truth of the Matter, an instant best seller. Out of print for many years, it is republished by MUP on the thirtieth anniversary of the Dismissal, with a new introduction by the author and other new reference material. Passionate, pithy, learned, witty, and vigorously combative, The Truth of the Matter tells the extraordinary political story of the only Prime Minister of Australia ever deposed from office.
