Liquidation World: On the Art of Living Absently (Short Circuits)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.39 $An examination of the disoriented subject of modernity: a dissolute figure who makes an makes an object of its absence; from Baudelaire to Broodthaers. In Liquidation World, Alexi Kukuljevic examines a distinctive form of subjectivity animating the avant-garde: that of the darkly humorous and utterly disoriented subject of modernity, a dissolute figure that makes an art of its own vacancy, an object of its absence. Shorn of the truly rotten illusion that the world is a fulfilling and meaningful place, these subjects identify themselves by a paradoxical disidentification―through the objects that take their places. They have mastered the art of living absently, of making something with nothing. Traversing their own morbid obsessions, they substitute the nonsensical for sense, the ridiculous for the meaningful.Kukuljevic analyzes a series of artistic practices that illuminate this subjectivity, ranging from Marcel Duchamp's Three Standard Stoppages to Charles Baudelaire's melancholia. He considers the paradox of Duchamp's apparatus in the Stoppages and the strange comedy of Marcel Broodthaers's relation to the readymade; the comic subject in Jacques Vaché and the ridiculous subject in Alfred Jarry; the nihilist in Paul Valéry's Monsieur Teste; Oswald Wiener's interpretation of the dandy; and Charles Baudelaire as a happy melancholic. Along the way, he also touches on the work of Thomas Bernhard, Andy Kaufman, Buster Keaton, and others. Finally, he offers an extended analysis of Danny's escape from his demented father in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Each of these subjects is, in Freud's terms, sick―sick in the specific sense that they assume the absence of meaning and the liquidation of value in the world. They concern themselves with art, without assuming its value or meaning. Utterly debased, fundamentally disoriented, they take the void as their medium.

Valerian: The Complete Collection, Volume 6 [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $With volumes 16 to 18 collected here, we find Valerian and Laureline suddenly rich beyond their wildest dreams, and this new situation brings the differences in their personalities in stark contrast: where Laureline remains true to herself and her love of life, Valerian finds himself idle and disoriented. Fortunately, when the former is kidnapped in Hostages of Ultralum, the son of Galaxity earns back his status as a hero and saviour. In the direct sequel, Orphan of the Stars, the united couple faces adversity and the hardships of parenthood (even temporary) together. Finally, In Uncertain Times brings them back on the trail of the vanished future Earth, paving the way for the last cycle and the saga's conclusion. With, as always, essays by Stan Barets, here on the alien cast of the series and the authors' various creations for the year 2000.

The Mountains of Madness [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.00 $Intimations of supernatural evil percolate through this weird adventure yarn from veteran horror writer Cave, enhancing its suspense and accenting its depiction of an island culture beholden to primitive superstitions. Dan Colby, an America new to the Haiti-like island of St. Joseph, awakens disoriented and under a strange influence in a graveyard near Plantation Jourdan, the estate he has just leased. At the same time, the plantation is visited by Janice Hall, an American writer researching her family's roots on the island before a slave revolt at the start of the 19th century. As surely as Dan and Janice will share romantic interests, inexplicable problems begin complicating their life on the coffee plantation: voodoo talismans begin popping up all over the grounds, intimidating the native workers, and both Americans are afflicted with frightening dreams and presentiments of evil. This is classic shudder pulp fare, but Cave distinguishes it with his colorful rendering of St. Joseph's characters and culture, and insightful treatment of the voodoo religion. He's also careful at dropping clues that seem to implicate everyone and intensify the mystery. Although set in contemporary times, this entertaining short novel has the feel of an older fiction style, the kind that only seasoned storytellers like Cave know how to write anymore. Missing Professor : An Academic Mystery
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.29 $Fresh out of graduate school and desperate to pay off her student loans, Nicole Adams joins the faculty at Higher State U, a small university with a dubious past located in the middle of the Midwest. On her second day of classes as a new assistant professor of philosophy, still flustered and disoriented, Nicole is plunged into a campus-wide mystery. Someone has ransacked the office she shares with the ill-tempered R. Reynolds Raskin, the department's senior professor, and he has since disappeared. Two weeks later, with Raskin still missing, Nicole receives a threatening phone call . . .Read one way, this is an entertaining parody of an academic mystery and a humorous take on academic life. Turning the book upside down reveals another purpose. Each chapter is constructed as an informal case study/discussion story, as is made manifest by a series of discussion questions intended for faculty development, new faculty orientation, and conversations among faculty, administrators, and academic staff. As the mystery unfolds, each chapter finds Nicole encountering challenging situations―such as, the first day of class, student incivility, teaching evaluations, peer observation, academic assessment, the scholarship of teaching and learning, faculty and student rights and responsibilities, core curricula, and tenure standards. This little book can be read and used both ways: as pure entertainment and as a series of informal case studies, spiced with humor, to help break down academic barriers and promote spirited discussions

Japan: A Guide of Japan for Teenagers
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.75 $Upon arrival in Japan, one inevitably undergoes culture shock. The Japanese way of life is so unique that it appears incomprehensible. Foreigners, or "gaijins" as they are commonly referred to, are initially disoriented and mystified. It covers everything from "DOs and DON'Ts" to "What to Visit and Where to Eat". It is essentially a compilation of my experience living in Japan. I provide my readers with valuable advice, exceptional addresses and useful suggestions. Although the first few days in Japan are unsettling, one rapidly learns to appreciate the country and its superb culture.
