Work of the Ninth Division (boer War)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.19 $This book will prove of unusual interest, not only to students of the Boer War, but to all those interested in military competence and the exercise of command in the field. Its author, Maj-Gen. Sir H.E. Colvile, was relieved of his command of the Ninth Division after twice incurring the displeasure of Lord Roberts, C-in-C of the British Army in South Africa. The affair led to a Parliamentary Inquiry - demanded by the young Winston Churchill - which backed Roberts’ condemnation of Colvile’s conduct. In his report to Parliament, Roberts stated that Colvile had twice shown ‘A want of initiative and military capacity’ and had ‘Failed to grasp the situation and to act with the energy and enterprise ... essential for command in the field’. In a private note attached to his copy of this book General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien - later a distinguished Great War commander - was even more damning. Smith-Dorrien - who had disobeyed Colvile’s orders to retire during the engagement at Sannah’s Post in order to rescue wounded men - wrote: “Were all the facts known about Gen. Colvile’s conduct on this occasion he would have (incurred) much severer comments than Lord Roberts’. I was a Brigadier under him there and was absolutely disgusted with him as a General and as a man”. This book - which includes an account of the decisive battle of Paardeburg - is Colvile’s defence. Read it and judge for yourself.

False Covenant: A Widdershins Adventure (Widdershins Adventures)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 96.83 $It’s been over half a year, now, since the brutal murder of Archbishop William de Laurent during his pilgrimage to the Galicien city of Davillon. During that time, the Church of the Hallowed Pact has assigned a new bishop to the city—but it has also made its displeasure at the death of its clergyman quite clear. Davillon’s economy has suffered beneath the weight of the Church’s displeasure. Much of the populace—angry at the clergy— has turned away from the Church hierarchy, choosing private worship or small, independent shrines. And the bishop, concerned for his new position and angry at the people of Davillon, plans to do something about it. But a supernatural threat is stalking the nighttime streets—a creature of the other world has come to infiltrate the seedier streets of Davillon, to intertwine its tendrils through the lower echelons of society. Faced with both political upheaval and a supernatural threat to its citizenry, the local representatives of the Church are paralyzed and the Guardsmen are in over their heads. And then there’s Widdershins--who’s tried, and failed, to stay out of trouble since taking over Genevieve’s tavern; who’s known to the Church and the Guard both, and trusted by neither; who may, with some of her Thieves’ Guild contacts, have unwittingly played a part in the bishop’s plans; and who, along with her personal god Olgun, may be the only real threat to the supernatural evil infesting Davillon.

Relation of Virginia: A Boy's
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.31 $A memoir of one of America's first adventurers, a young boy who acted as a link between the Jamestown colonists and the Patawomecks and Powhatans "Being in displeasure of my friends, and desirous to see other countries, after three months sail we come with prosperous winds in sight of Virginia." So begins the fascinating tale of Henry Spelman, a 14 year-old boy whose mother sent him to Virginia in 1609. One of Jamestown's early arrivals, Spelman soon became an integral player, and sometimes a pawn, in the power struggle between the Chesapeake Algonquians and the English settlers. Shortly after he arrived in the Chesapeake, Henry accompanied another English boy, Thomas Savage, to Powhatan's capital and after a few months accompanied the Patawomeck chief Iopassus to the Potomac. Spelman learned Chesapeake Algonquian languages and customs, acted as an interpreter, and knew a host of colonial America's most well-known figures, from Pocahontas to Powhatan to Captain John Smith. This remarkable manuscript tells Henry's story in his own words, and it is the only description of Chesapeake Algonquian culture written with an insider's knowledge. Spelman's account is lively and violent, rich with anthropological and historical detail. A valuable and unique primary document, this book illuminates the beginnings of English America and tells us much about how the Chesapeake Algonquians viewed the English invaders. It provides the first transcription from the original manuscript since 1872.

The Revelation of Ares, Bilingual Edition (English & French)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.16 $When will the second coming of Christ occur? It already has. Potay claims that in 1974 he was visited 40 times by Jesus -- not as an apparition, but in a physical encounter as a man talks to another man (Exodus). Jesus spoke in French and commanded Potay to write down His words. Jesus told of God's displeasure with the direction of humanity and what action must be taken by each individual to recreate the world. For 40 days, Potay recorded Christ's words, which resulted in The Revelation of Ares. The core of the book is a revelation: The Gospel Delivered in Ares (1974) and The Book (1977). Originally written in French, the current edition is paralleled by a skillful translation into English. In the introduction Potay points out that his writings are God's Word, supernatural but not religious, not political, not fictional. He stresses that God emphasizes man's freedom. He argues that old religious faith made of dogmas, worship and rules should be replaced by faith made of love, creativeness and freedom.
